What's all the Rage about?

"Recently, I acquired id Software’s 2011 shooter RAGE during an Amazon sale. Most of the critics I trust either gave it a thrashing or an okay score, but I couldn’t pass up a chance to see id Tech 5, especially for the meager asking price of $10. After five or so hours with the game, I was addicted. But why?" (PC, PS3, Rage, Xbox 360)

I too picked up Rage recently, but I'm having the opposite reaction. I don't give a damn about playing it and don't think the shooting is anything special at all. To each his own.

The AI is awesome though. Mutants would duck and roll under my wingstick. They would also jump off walls to dodge it. Never seen something like that before in all the games I've played.

Rage had absolutely everything nailed down...except for the fact that they didn't have an actual game. It was ten times the size Doom II on my hard drive but about the length of Doom's first shareware episode. Like I said, graphics are great, AI is great, animation is great, enemies are great, guns are great... it's all awesome. It's just that in terms of "game" Rage is more of a demo. It even ends in a really frustrating way just like a demo.

I just hope that Doom 4 lasts longer than a brisk afternoon, if it does and it has all the awesome of rage then everything in the world will be well.

It was an extremely solid shooter with tight controls. If anyone was looking for more in the game they would be disappointed. I was a tad disappointed because I thought there would be a stronger emphasis on the open world and exploration aspects but as far as it being a shooter its a 100% top notch game.

Ii actually got it for $7 from gamefly and i put it in if i want to see good graphics its the best graphics on 360 to me and I own skyrim and battlefield 3

Personally i think the gameplay itself, the shooting mechanics and stuff is top notch, i love it. Just it feels like its missing something that its not finished. I enjoyed it but it wasn't worth the day 1 purchase at all.

I completely agree with you

I'll drink to that. It had a number of things it just needed to flesh out more (more open world, better loot, better crafting) they could refine those concepts in the first game and have something amazing

I was pretty much coming here to say the exact same thing. The shooting mechanics are perfect. Everything else seems to be a mish-mash of new and dated game design. The game isn't at all bad, but it wasn't helped by a rushed ending and a bland story.

Agreed. The game ended too abruptly.

I really liked Rage. It's one of those games I couldn't put down. And that's a rare thing for me.

I absolutely loved the gunplay, and the game was SOOOOO well optimized. I cried when I could run the game max everything on a HD 4650 and it STILL looked liked one of the best games I've seen on PC.

Was very happy to play a game soo well optimized and no frame rate drops.

Nice to hear an ATI user enjoyed this , i couldn't maintain 60fps would stutter to 40 then shoot back up for no reason , gonna give it another go as it may have been related to my card overheating which i recently fixed.

ATI 5870 btw

My first play through only resulted in flickering from time to time. Not once though did the frame rate drop or in anyway become unplayable. Now that the issues have been resolved I did another small run. Looks and runs even smoother now. I enjoyed the game.

I bought it day 1 and even reviewed it on N4G. Thought I gave it a fair score. I even got the platinum. But I agree with IaMs12. It just doesn't feel like it was a finished game. It felt more like a tech demo to show you what they could do with the engine.

Yeah so did I, it's an enjoyable enough 15 hours or so, I even liked the racing, though the MP was kind of pointless, the co-op missions were fun too because they fleshed out the story a bit more

"But why?" - What a horrible way to begin an essay or article. Learn how to write. I answered your question right away - "I don't give a s*%# why!"

Horrible article about a horrible game.

News please!

I just finished it on Nightmare difficulty and now i'm going to replay it for the 100% completion...i really don't get the dissing of this game it's great/solid controls/looks better than most games & it's fun as hell. I'm excited that Bethesda and IdSoftware want to expand the RAGE Franchise with sequels...good choice IdSoftware your game is awesome and you nailed it! It was everything i hoped for and more.
