Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor Review | EuroGamer

EuroGamer: "Would Heavy Armor be a better game if it ditched Kinect and focused purely on the tried-and-tested buttons? In all honesty, no - because without the novelty of raising your arm to pull down a periscope or punch your fleeing co-pilot in the face, this would be a comparatively dull experience. As it stands, it's an interesting experiment which - somewhat ironically - fails to justify the cost of an expensive peripheral. But if you already own a Kinect and fancy something more substantial, then Heavy Armor is worth a look because, at least, it dared to try." (Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, Xbox 360) 5/10

Heavy Armor's failure falls squarely on the developers shoulders not Kinect. It uses QTE events in conjunction with Kinect which causes players all kinds of confusion as the game is saying "pull the lever" or "push that" but due to how they implemented it ...you see your arms in front of you and try to activate somethign but can't until the game makes the lever "active"...its utterly stupid design. Not too mention absolutely brutal in how hard they make the game...no difficulty settings either...

The original game came with this overly complicated control board to do all your commands and it was pretty cool because it simulated the cockpit of the machine. What they did with Kinect tried to do the same but I feel it just fell flat on its face and would have been better without the device all together. Give me back the 200$ control panel. I always enjoyed those old school mech/pilot/space sims that use joysticks. Sadly you never find those anymore and there is no comparison to things like Kinect because they feel different, function different, break immersion, and respond poorly.

Fault may not be on the device, but its certainly on its maker. MS has just failed to show what to do with the thing. They just dropped it on the market expecting 3rd parties to figure it out.

Three years of promotion and no examples.

Been moved to the Next Box and Kinect 2.0.

So yeah: they're going to be moving to the next level of the tech to prove it.

and this is my point... Kinect isnt at fault for this game being crap. The developer ultimately made a bad game with poor design choices in terms of how they used Kinect and controller. Kinect does work in this game, I have played it.. it works. The problem is how they have you using kinect and how they manage using kinect in the game. Many times you will be trying to do things thinking you should be doing them at that time but the game QTE is not ready for any input...once the input is active you can then do it ...but not before...and you will want to try and do it before many, many times...

I am sure I am doing a poor job of explaining this point and I suppose it doesn't really matter..bad games are bad games.

This was NEVER going to work. Taking a game with the most complicated control scheme possibly EVER, and making it into one with mostly motion controls? Who REALLY thought that would be successful?

I mean, honestly speaking, the Kinect's best games are not very complicated. Steel Battalion is very complicated even in concept form, to say nothing of execution. It's not something the Kinect is capable of doing in its current form.

Don't blame the devs for the shortcoming of the hardware.

Its funny everytime a new kinect game is announced theres a grew of around 5 guys on here saying "yeah Kinect is going to be awesome with this blahhhh blahhhh blahhhhhh" then Star Wars comes out ppl comment on how garbage it is and then another five come and say "Watch steel batalion is going to be awesome" lol hahahaha and it just keeps going until Kinect is all but a forgotten laughing stop of the gaming community lol
