Is Grand Theft Auto Still Relevant?

Rockstar Games is one of the most recognized studios in the gaming industry, and for good reason. Throughout the years, Rockstar has continued to push the limits of video games, both in terms of technical advancements and controversial content, and has always managed to break new ground in storytelling and realism. The studio’s most recent success is Max Payne 3, which released to critical acclaim and has sold very well commercially. (Industry)

Its still relevant to me :)
CouldHaveYelledUiiW  +   328d ago
Then I would say it's relevant.
I've never played a GTA game but I can feel its effects across the industry.
And I am happy that a franchise like it is around.
Een if it has some bad games, in its future, it is always good to have games like this that push gaming content toward Cinematic maturity.

Maturity that goes beyond Boobies, Fart jokes, and Blood.

Release it and you'll see.
HammadTheOne  +   328d ago
You should play it. San Andreas would be a good place to start along with GTA 4, but the classics might be a bit particular to tastes.
JoySticksFTW  +   328d ago
I actually wasn't a huge GTA IV fan, but the DLC is fun and better than the main game in my opinion.

I'm one of those that didn't like GTA IV's more serious tone, but the game is definitely still relevant.
jeseth  +   327d ago
Still love GTA. I would really love to see another Vice City.
Show up in Vice City with Vercetti in charge and have to take out what he built up. It would be awesome, love the time era ... music, clothes, cheesy hair and jewelry, and cars. The 80's are just an awesome decade to prtray.

Oh, and add create a character already! Still, GTA is awesome, I'm glad they don't release annual games and ruin their production with over saturation.
orange-skittle  +   327d ago
Seems like the everyone...
would say San Andreas was the best in the series. I guess thats why everyone loved Ballad of Gay Tony.
Persistantthug  +   328d ago
For me, GTA 4 is my most favorite game of this generation.
I didn't play any of the previous 3D GTA's from the previous gen, so I only judged the game on what it was now and what I saw and played.

But to me, I loved the characters, I loved the story, the dialog, I loved the gameplay, and I love how the game made me feel like I was in New York. From the billboards, the radio ads, TV shows, to the way the pedestrians act and respond......No other game this generation has had that kind of attention to detail with modern day urban large scale city representation. The city felt like it was alive.

And then the online was kick butt too (GTA RACE was freakin awesome).

I can't wait for GTA5, and I hope they give me more of the same....but bigger and more of it.

GTA RACE IS JUST SO SEXY!
EVILDEAD360  +   328d ago
As relavant as ANY title in ANY gen..watch the launch..
Played them all and GTA4 got so much unnecessary hate it was laughable. But most of the people whining literaly admitted to playing a small fraction of the game.

Then the DLC still ranks about many games out there now.

GTA 5 is going to stop the gaming world to a screeching halt..I'd say that's relavant.

^^^ But GTA4 lose so much what GTA:SA had, I loved breaking in2 peoples house, hooking up my ride, recruiting my fellow gang members to ride on some "Mark ass tricks" lol. It's getting stale IMO, that's probably why I'm anticipating AGENT so much, but I most confuse I will have it probably day2(work graveyard shift)
HSx9  +   327d ago
I still play GTA to this day! GTA RACE is one of my favorite game modes along with Free Mode.
Nimblest-Assassin  +   328d ago
Is this headline a joke? When a game wins awards for not being at the show, because people wanted to see it. When people did through another game to find "easter eggs". when people look at the first trailer to look for hints of when the next trailer will come out. When people do not believe the developer when they said they would not be at e3, and then go into each conference praying that the words Grand Theft Auto 5 come up. When the name alone makes non gamers want to pick up the controller again....

Yeah, I think its safe to assume the name Grand Theft Auto is relevant

Is Grand Theft Auto Still Relevant?
Do Hookers still exist?

As long as we have Guns Drugs and Hookers GTA will be relevant.

Can't wait for GTAV........and the new batch of Hookers!
koh  +   328d ago
I know, I'm actually starting to worry that I'm close to killing every hooker in Liberty City... I need a fresh batch.

I found the last one borring they got too far from their roots. I enjoyed saints row 3 better and i was a huge GTA 3 and vice city fan.
jjdoyle  +   327d ago
exactlys! awesome game is awesome no matters what.
Cajun Chicken  +   328d ago
I think this question is irrelevant.
Crazyglues  +   327d ago
Yeah I agree, because at least here anyway GTA V is Like the most anticipated game so of course it's relevant.

-Ever time a story pops up about anything to do with GTA it's in the top stories in about two minutes... (seems to be pretty relevant if you ask me)

You can answer this question simply by looking at the front page of N4G daily.

Yes, yes it is.

lol, I know right?

Also, look at the modding community...other than DayZ the only other game with mainstream mod recognition is GTA IV. Who in the core community hasn't had a whiff of iCEnhancer yet? Everyone knows about it now and it's become the new Crysis for benchmark standards in video game photorealism.

More than anything, GTA has proven to be more relevant than all those other cookie-cutter games media shoves down our throat to pretend to be relevant (I guarantee you, five years from now GTA IV and GTA V will still have a strong modding community but Black Ops 2 won't even be discussed on most forums).
OneAboveAll  +   328d ago
Just ask the millions who buy the titles when they come out. Yea it is, there are no other games out there like GTA except for Saints Row and it's not even that good of a series.

HammadTheOne  +   328d ago
Honestly, you can't compare the two after Saints Row 3. It went for the over-the-top feel while GTA settles for semi-realistic fun. The closest GTA is to Saints Row is with the Ballad of Gay Tony DLC.
milohighclub  +   327d ago
I loved saints row 1&2 but 3 was wank...
Tonester925  +   328d ago
Yes! I can't wait to play the Online also. I can't wait for another trailer and release date
Gen0ne  +   328d ago
To its many millions of fans, it sure is. Not to me though, Saints Row the 3rd is exactly how I want an open world sandbox game to be. Although SR3 kinda spoiled me, I'll give the new GTA a shot.
Gen0ne  +   328d ago
I see that 4 GTA fans disagree with me.
Bonerrr  +   328d ago
Yes, now STFU.
Hudahudahuda  +   328d ago
Gta hasn't had a bad game as of yet so I don't know why the author is asking this.
vortis  +   328d ago
He must have confused Rockstar with Activision and meant to ask "Is Call of Duty still relevant?" to which I would respond, "No."
PirateThom  +   328d ago
Still relevant, but I'm still disappointed by GTA4.

I agree,

Was not impressed with GTA4. My main complaint is the game was TOO big. It was easy to get sidetracked and the sidetracking became boring which in turn made the game boring.

I will give GTA5 a shot but it will be Gameflied!
Yardie  +   328d ago
for me there just wasn't enough variety, it was pretty much only cities. that being said GTA IV is probably my most played game this gen.

GTA V seems to be bringing back some map variety from what we've seen in the trailer.
Eazy-Eman  +   327d ago
So I'm guessing you're not a fan of Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 3, or any other sandbox games with alot of stuff to do?
maniacmayhem  +   327d ago
@Eazy-Eman

Reading over my comment it was painfully obvious that I was specifically talking about GTA not Skyrim, not Oblivion and not Fallout.

GTA had too many boring sidetrack missions.

Sorry if i wasnt clear enough.

The folks at Rockstar need to understand that GTA 4 wasn't successful because it was a masterpiece game, but because it was a next-gen GTA and everyone had to see what it would be like.

To me Red Dead Redemption is the real GTA of this gen and is the game that GTA 5 needs to beat in order to be relevant to me.

There is alot riding on GTA 5. It can't just be a re skin of GTA 4. This a new numbered version in the series so it has to be leaps and bounds better than 4 and absolutely cannot be just a minor improvment like the GTA3 games series. I hope Rockstar knows the severity of the situation and knows what they are doing.
Aggesan  +   328d ago
I will get gta5, but the rockstar game im really looking forward too is red dead redemption 2.
SegaKnuckles86  +   328d ago
Uhh Red Dead Redemption IS the second game. You must have forgotten about Red Dead Revolver for the PS2 and Xbox.
C0MPUT3R  +   328d ago
I think they have gotten better with every release.
.
GTA V is my most highly anticipated game.

NastyLeftHook0  +   328d ago
yes gta is still relevant! there AMAZING games.
SpinalRemains138  +   328d ago
I think they're kind of tired.

The missions get very tiresome and frankly, it's often times more fun to just play sandbox and do mayhem on your own. There's only so far you can go with the idea.

The new games only change location and a few vehicles. There's really nothing innovative or groundbreaking about it anymore.

When I first played Vice City I thought it was the greatest thing. Now I can't get excited about it.
HammadTheOne  +   328d ago
You haven't played San Andreas have you?
beerkeg  +   328d ago
What a stupid question. GTA5 is one of the most anticipated games of the moment. Lots of people, including myself, are looking forward to it, and this article asks one of the dumbest questions you can ask and expects us to take it seriously.

Duh, yes it's relevant. It's more relevant than your question.
Ulf  +   328d ago
What a ridiculous question this article asks.

If one were to rephrase it "would GTA V as a PS3 exclusive be a big deal?" The answer would be the same, but the article would have been dismissed as drivel.
TheDivine  +   328d ago
Not for me. The psx ones were fun and then gta3 hit and BOOM, changed the game. After 100's of hours possibly thousands over the 3 ps2 games ive been burned out. Maybe beating up hookers and running people over just lost its appeal also idk. I did like chinatown wars that was a nice throwback. 4 was a good game but it bored me to death, too much of the same thing imo.

It will release and sell 20 million, prob get near perfect scores and people will enjoy it so no its releavant for everyone else lol.

Grand Theft Auto V is pretty much the only game I can think of that can challenge GTA IV to be the highest rated game of this gen. A Metascore of 98 will be pretty hard to beat, though.
BlaqMagiq24  +   328d ago
Only one game has a score above 98 and that's Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with a score of 99. A game that came out 2 generations ago. GTA IV is the only game this gen to come that close.
RockmanII7  +   328d ago
Of course it is, every press conference during E3 the comments were filled with "Where's GTA5" "Has GTA5 been shown?" "GTA5!". I've moved onto other sandbox franchises like Just Cause and Saints Row but there are still a ton of people excited for GTA5.
SegaKnuckles86  +   328d ago
Well GTA V is one of the only few games I am anticipated for this year, so yes it is.
MasterCornholio  +   328d ago
Is paying a hooker for sex and then killing her to get your money back fun?

YES
MRMagoo123  +   328d ago
GTA will always be relevant the same as FF series will be these are the stand outs of there genres, imo tho gta4 was a bit too serious after finishing last gen with gta san andreas they really need to bring the fun and world exploration back.
Ramas  +   328d ago
after seeing watch dogs GTA kinda looks not so good anymore.
OMEGAZONE  +   328d ago
It's the most relevant franchise in video game history and will continue to be for many years to come. The launch figures and statistics for GTAIV speak for themselves. When GTAV launches expect the internet to crash.
UConcord11  +   328d ago
Never really liked a GTA game after san andreas. One of my favorite games of all time.

Hated that the series went from gangsta "this is my block, that's yours" to like underground mafia type stuff.
mxkite  +   328d ago
In this very days it is still relevant they continue to bring great games for example red dead redemption
ALLWRONG  +   328d ago

Gaetano  +   328d ago
GTA IV is a great game and it gets so much unnecessary hate. It takes things more seriously than it's predecessors, but gives us such an amazing city in the process, and a games engine that is now used throughout the industry.

GTA V will blow people away.
NeoTribe  +   328d ago
Is this a joke?
Commander-Koslun  +   328d ago
Of course GTA is still relevant, it's going to be for a long time just like any other successful video game series. I love GTA, completely and can't wait to see the next one.
Roccetarius  +   328d ago
GTA haven't been relevant to me since GTA 2 / SA. I really don't find it appealing anymore.
