PS3 'Firmware 4.20' Releasing June 26th, Firmware Details
It was revealed Monday morning that Sony Computer Entertainment will be releasing a new firmware update for the PlayStation on Tuesday, June 26th. Here are some of the functions and fixes the firmware will bring.
(PS3)
I would hope to see more. A jump from 4.11 to 4.20 is big so I would assume there was more. I mean these things seem completely pointless to add. I don't care about cross game chatting anymore, but I would love to be able to have a better connection with Vita like seeing trophies from both systems on PS3 and being able to recognize Vita players ( they are always at the bottom of the list and it's wonky.)
Sony ran out of space to actually add anything good a long time ago. All of it was pretty much wasted on 3D and Blu Ray updates too. Instead of adding features that we actually wanted, sony used it to turn it into an advertising box for thier newest tech.
After 4.11 some hackers claimed it was possible again to go online. I belive it's a major version jump (from 4.11 to 4.20) because of security update, not so much about features.
For me it's enough, I don't need cross chat or better Vita support, it's cool if they come, but a hack free online is way more important.
Best thing about this update is the timed shut down thing. Sometimes I want my console to shutdown after downloading for a while, but I don't know how long it will take, so rather than leave it on all day, I'd prefer it if I let it download for a couple of hours here and there.
@Gaffyh The PS3 already does that. While downloading, go all the way to the left of the XMB and hit the Power Off button at the top, it will ask you if you want it to stay on until the download is done.
Give us the ability to delete and/or hide trophies.
That way we can get rid of BS, like Free Realms, which was supposed to be a demo.. along with other 0% or low percentage games we didn't like and don't want on our lists.
We can then play games to just try them out or just have a little fun without worrying about them being on your trophy list.
Trophies have made gaming more of a chore for me now. I either then 'have to' try to get 100%/Plat or I have to remember to go on a BS account to test games. I can't just play for fun on my account without having to worry about stuff I wind up not liking showing up on my trophy list. (I know I obviously COULD play for fun on my main account, but I don't want a crappy looking trophy list that's filled with stuff I don't like and 0-low %s)
They need to get the demos off of your download history and only have that for games you paid for. I'm going through 400 downloads trying to find the 20 or so things I bought.
@guitar Funny (barely), but no, I never played Hannah Montana... But I would like to get rid of Free Realms, Ragdoll Kung Fu, MLB10, and similar games that I played for 2 seconds and now are just eyesores on my trophy list.
@pixel, agreed on removing the demos in download history. Had the same annoyance recently trying to find old PS+ games I downloaded around a year ago like Goldenaxe, Streets of Rage 2, etc.
@venom - yeah I know that, I mean if I'm downloading a large file and I know it will take a very long time, I'd rather switch it off before the download finishes and let it download at another time, for example when I'm playing a different game. I dunno if that makes sense.
"For those of you who use the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies on your PS3, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality, giving you a superior audio experience."
Maybe you where on the Xbox 360? For the past number of years, there has been a major update every year with significant features and improvements.
PS3 firmware has consistently been consistently lacking. Mostly bug fixes labeled as stability improvement.
There is always a risk that you brick your console during updates and there is no warranty replacement if it happens so I prefer one large update that is thoroughly tested than little tiny ones that have barely any features let alone ones I would use.
I'm not disappointed, because I gave up hope of any decent new firmware updates long ago, so this isn't anything to write home about, but its better than no update.
I actually agree with you on the ability to delete or hide trophies....there are several games that I tried and didn't really care for that I have a 1% or something close that I really will not ever go back and play again.....at the very least it would be nice to be able to hide them.
As a frequent visitor of psxscene.com, ps3hax.com I can sadly say that 4.11 hasn't been exploited yet. They're still trying to work around the 3.55 firmware to play games.
It's more the fact that getting all excited because you saw "420" somewhere makes you look like a damn teenage girl. Alcohol is a much more serious drug than weed and you don't see everyone acting crazy whenever they see beer bottles like it's some kind of super secret club thing
I don't play too often with the ps3, but every time I do I have to update and then wait for the install which is often longer. It does get annoying and I just simply let it update and do not play. Console should allow anyone to update it in the background.
btw-I know it cannot be done conveniently because of the consoles puny memory. So let this be a lesson for Sony.
Just maybe three or four updates a year, some of which are completely optional, and only take a few minutes to complete... Such an inconvenience, I think I'll sell my system now that you brought it up.
Actually that's one of the reasons I got rid of the system, when I wanted to play a game I hadnt played in a while, i pop it in , sit on the couch and, update 1/4 1% wtf! *turns off*.
I agree. That is one of my major sticking points with PSN and PS3. I don't use it that often, but every time I do, there are staggered updates and sometimes takes a long time.
On Xbox 360, when there is an update, I don't even have to exit the game.
While the game is running, I say yes to the update prompt and it downloads in the background and I can immediately play. No reboot of the game necessary. The updates are small and fast too.
Also, I don't have to wait for a game install that takes at least 15-20 minutes on top of the updates!
Thats not true, it was not there from the beginning. That ability came much much later. Originally, you had to download and install the update, the difference was that it was much much faster on the 360. But you could not play the game while it was downloading the update or while updating it.
Add Demon's Souls and Dark Souls to the list. Crazy frustrating knowing they are gone if the system bricks. And I am not willing to pay $50 when I should be allowed to protect those saves for free.
Yes! That REALLY pissed me off, GT5 was (and I think still may be) save locked, so I couldnt back it up on my old PS3 which eventually got YLOD... After I had put in about 60 hours into te game and finished a good chunk of it >.>
Still, now there is no real reason NOT to join PS+ so I did, and can now back it up, and have. But I totally understand the annoyance of not having it. And I really think it should be universal feature, not exclusive to Plus... And that is coming from someone who actually does pay for it.
At least we can copy multiple save files. It can be a hassle coping over a bunch of data to cloud one by one. Still I wish we would see some nice new feature.
Nice update for gamesaves especially for people that use the cloud. Though I only copy my copy-prohibited saves to the cloud, which isnt that many and backup the rest to an external hard drive
What about when a trophy unlocks I allowing people to just press the PS button and have it go directly to the trophy...same thing with new messages.
I sometimes get games on my 360 just because it takes forever to see what a new trophy was for. You have to press PS, scroll to trophies, press on trophies, select the the right trophies (sometimes twice), scroll through all the trophies to find the new one, then another 3 button presses to get back to the game.
On 360 I press the guide button once to see the achievement, and once again to get back to the game, that's it.
It's a shame too because I like trophies better than achievements.
A-fuckin-men to that, i have thought the entire xmb needs an overhaul, just to cluncky, too many button presses to complete a simple action, like checking a msg. The ps3 has/had so much potential if they WOULD JUST FUCKING LISTEN TO THE PLAYERS...
Scrolling to trophies manually is a BIT of a pain... But hardly worth stating that Sony never listened to us just because of it. We wanted achievements, and they gave that to us.
@NBT91 Scrolling trophies? What about syncing? It takes FOREVER.How about checking a message? You have to click ps button, hit right button 4 times, click on msgs, click on inbox, click on the msg. On the 360 if i get a msg, i hit the guide button, 1 FUCKING BUTTON! The community has been very vocal over things that are important to US. EX. cross game/party chat, full ps2 bc, better browser, better OS.
Sony even created the share blog to let the community tell them what features they want the most. Right now the top 5 req features are nowhere on the horizon.
I'm not saying sony sucks, i love my ps3, i just wish the company WOULD LISTEN!
I totally agree, I actually kind of like my PS3 better than my 360 because MS charges for online and I was a victim of 360s former hardware quality issues and generally, PS3 is a far better value than 360... BUT, lately I've been getting multiplats on 360 just because I'm tired of the slow message and trophy system.
Sony gives us all this non-essential stuff with their updates but never listens to what the owners actually want to improve playing an actual game.
There are a bunch of ways to sort your trophy list. Press triangle on a game in your trophy list. Choose the one that displays your newest unlocked trophy at the top.
That eliminates any scrolling through trophies.
You can choose whether DLC trophies are shown with the main game's trophies or in a separate list.
That eliminates the "sometimes twice" click.
You only need to hit the PS button to get back to the game. You don't need three button presses.
And if you leave the XMB on the trophy menu, the next time you bring it up, it will be on the trophy list. And when you bring up the XMB for the first time after starting a game, the trophy list is only two options up.
That eliminates a whole lot of the steps you've been taking.
Seems like theirs alot of baby's on here, seeing alot of people are crying about dumb stuff. 3D? I think it was a good idea Sony did because now you don't have to buy a 3D Bluray player just to watch a 3D movie.
Plus 360 is slowly trying to do 3D support because it is doing good for Sony.
Don't care if this doesn't add anything big to the PS3, I'm happy with what they have given to me.
Sony and 3D Sony is a TV maker it makes sense for them to push 3D. I have a 3D TV and it's cool, I have played games on my PS3 in 3D and watched 3D movies, but Sony does have an angle that M$ does not.
MULTIPLE SAVE COPYING?!?!?! FIIIIIIIIIINALY! It's about freakin' time. So many times, I've wanted to backup all of my saves and doing it one by one is a PAIN IN THE ASS. Took 'em long enough for such a simple feature.
What about The ability to play games after you download them. Why do I have to download then install everything? What about a more detailed UI for gamer profiles? I don't care about a file copy feature. And I bet it takes my console 15 min to download this update and another 15 to install. Has PSN always been like this?
"- Under (Games) > (Saved Data Utility (PS3™), you can now select multiple saved data items, and then either delete or copy them as a group."
i think i just peed a little... not being able to select multiple saved data files and delete them has been one of my biggest annoyances, especially when i had over 100 saved data files for dead space/fallout 3/fallout: new vegas.
All these little things that everyone is crying over have been on xbox live for years and much more and you can play your games as soon as you get them without manatory installs and firmware updates every month. 360 does downloads and installs at the same time and in half the time of the ps3 when you have one on the 360. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything as I own both 360 and ps3 but its just funny to me as live has had most all these features since the start and its secure and its the reason I myself personally only use my ps3 when I have to as when a sony exclusive that I enjoy comes out.
One of the reasons we dont get as many firmware updates for the PS3 these days is most likely because the OS developers have moved onto the PS4 OS development.
Seriously, it's been years since nothing good... wait the browser improved with the last update, right? :P
Somehow, I feel used.
Browser may have improved, but the Vita has a better browser than the PS3, so hopefully the PS4 will have a good browser.
@ Pushagree
Maybe so, if it is true, then Sony should add major features with downloadable apps.
For me it's enough, I don't need cross chat or better Vita support, it's cool if they come, but a hack free online is way more important.

Sounds like someone played the Hannah Montana game.
Yeah, it's about time they sorted that out.
'Give a crap about demo history?
Funny (barely), but no, I never played Hannah Montana... But I would like to get rid of Free Realms, Ragdoll Kung Fu, MLB10, and similar games that I played for 2 seconds and now are just eyesores on my trophy list.

that a minor update is going to give you any major changes that were not announced in the first place.
However, all those new additions and improvements listed are welcome.
This was the most exciting "feature" for me. Now I don't have to listen to mic audio when using the headset.
I like this too! this is exciting

Just noticed that 420 bit as well lol.

YOU WILL GET ALL DISAGREES AND YOU WILL LIKE IT! LIKE IT!!!!!!!
OH THE HORROR! Grow up.

This is especially good for the new PS+ subscribers who need to copy all of their saved games to the cloud. It won't be tedious anymore :)
Crysis 2
Sly Cooper Collection
Any Skate game
Tomb Raider Underworld
All of the above game saves are locked.
you can backu GOWIII
and to
@NBT91
you can definitely save/backup GT5, its been that way since a certain update

and that makes it much easier
???????
so you admit you can't read? makes sense.
Reading is hard.
Sounds like Google Images is right up your alley. It has all the pretty pictures you'll ever need. Grab a sippy cup of juice, sit back, and enjoy.

Also, Xbox 360 can do full stereoscopic 3D, but nobody cares. It's costly, uncomfortable to wear 3D glass, and 3D effects are also uncomfortable!
I *barely* ever use the 3D feature of my TV and even my die hard Sony fanboy family members that pushed me to get a 3D TV don't even use it.
Edit: kidding.... kind of.
The ability to play games after you download them. Why do I have to download then install everything? What about a more detailed UI for gamer profiles? I don't care about a file copy feature. Get Out. your not welcomed here because you are off topic and trolling.
Don't worry, you haven't. I'll stick to my PS3.
Installing a game takes 5 seconds.
If paying an annual Too much nitpicking here.
The update wasn't supposed to wash and shine your car every week, guys.
lets take Gran Turismo 5 for instance. 40 minute install? not to mention SEVENTEEN fucking patches, then to install them all? took fucking hours.
Like you said, let's be realistic.
