article is quite odd, it doesnt seem hold true, because over the last few years i have been overwhelmled with rpgs and online rpgs, i still have loads to start playing and many to finish
I like the Recettear game, it's very casual and easy to pick. I've seen a similar game in Kongregate but it's full of restrictions for the dev's profit. Does anyone know any game similar to this one?
Reccetear is the only "moe" JRPG I've picked up and actually liked. And I've given 'em all a chance.
It kind of sucks that ultimately the "best" way to play is to ignore the dungeon segments, which is a shame, because combat is REALLY fun (reminiscent of Ys).
more western rpgs im fine with, but jrpgs? no...they rarely make it to america for good reason. theres just not a big audience for them because honestly its just a 1 button press linear game that takes no thought or skill. snes/ps1 era they were cool, we have moved on to real time combat with huge worlds. theres no place for jrpgs except pokemon and even then im sure more than 90% of fans want a westernized version.
I think there is plenty of room for JRPGs. Plus, not all of them are turn-based. Look at the Ys series - full-on active combat. All they have to do is learn how to adapt and rediscover their identity. There is certainly an audience out there craving more of that subset of the genre.
And there already is a westernized version of Pokemon. It's called Skylanders.
So... I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you haven't played a JRPG in about 10 years or so.
Cuz there's no way you could have beat .hack, Xenosaga, Valkyrie Profile, Valkyria Chronicles, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Graces, FFXIII(despite what people say), and plenty of others by just pressing one button. And of the games on that short list, only a few of them are "linear."
I say this all the time, but I feel I must say it again: don't talk about JRPGs if you don't know anything about them. And it's apparent you know nothing about JRPGs, so you should sit this one out.
Yeah...I havent played a jrpg since final fantasy 10, I just always thought to have a true jrpg the main characteristic was the turn based combat, I didnt know the genre really moved away from that. No need to get upset for my misinformed noobness of what is now jrpg. So what you are saying is the genre is becoming more western? Thanks Ill look into some of those titles.
It's not about being Westernized or turn-based or anything. Even back in the day, there were games like Star Ocean that weren't turn-based. And hybrid types like Grandia II. It's all about being open-minded when it comes to the games. They may all be JRPGs, but most of them play drastically different from each other.
PSN has a lot of solid indie games itself - just very few happen to be RPGs. With Sony's Pub Fund, however, expect a pretty big influx of solid titles coming from small developers.

Grimrock is a great, old-school dungeon crawler.
To the Moon sort of runs on autopilot most of the time, but the story is really great.
Cthulhu Saves the World was a surprisingly funny and fun JRPG-inspired game.

Thanks.
There is only 1 PSN game on that list :-(
