The 5 Best Uses of Cel Shading In Video Games: Part Deux

Daniel Hill Writes - Last week, I constructed a list of what I thought to be the five best uses of cel shading in gaming in terms of how effectively they melded with the feel, atmosphere and mood of the game. While I think my original list was strong and I stand by my original choices, it was not without its flaws, and thanks to the always-insightful comments section, I realized that there were some titles that deserved to be there, but weren’t. I’m doing this to appease no one but me…don’t call me Bioware. As an enthusiast, no, a beau of this writer’s inamorata that is cel shading, I am giving these games shine because they do, indeed, do use cel shading beautifully.

Still missing Prince of Persia and DQ8, but you can't fit them all into one list.

In those cases, i think added more to pure aesthitics than the feel of the game, something i think these titles did a littke better. I almost put PoP though.

So gutted I missed out on XIII and Killer 7, would love them to be re-released at some point.

I gotta say I'd take a HD Wind Waker over any of them tho!

snipes1014319d ago

Both of those games are BC on xbox an ps3 (if you dont have a ps slim)

Thanks for the heads up!

Forget Gravity Rush movie, give us another GR game!

porkChop105d ago

I didn't even know a movie was coming. If they can get the visuals and everything right I'll watch it.

Barlos105d ago

I didn't either, until this article. I'm also surprised, since GR was a commercial flop. Seems weird that they'd want to invest money into making it into a film.

I think the games are great though, especially on Vita. I think the move to PS4 killed the experience a little, but I'd still like to see a new one.

1Victor104d ago

I didn’t know it was in development ether but it makes sense after they saw the first doctor strange movie and the far from home fight, if it’s like that’s it’s going to be one of those Oscar nominees

Cacabunga104d ago

GR movie and shutting Japan Studio.. so stupid

porkChop104d ago

@Cacabunga

Oh yeah... Well there goes any hope for a new game. Shuttering Japan Studio was a really bad decision.

Surely you’d think if the movie is coming so is another game

And I couldn’t be happier.

Only played the demo of gr2 but let me say it’s one of the most artistic and inventive new games. Ps5 will power gr3 to new heights
Fingers crossed

Made my day hearing this.

Finally, something innovative

Redemption-64105d ago

GR2 flopped, which would they make a new game? A movie has more appeal and a successful hit at the bix office, could lead to a new game for the franchise

ChasterMies105d ago

Ok, I’ll stop sitting on Gravity Rush 2. It’s been in my library for only 8 years.

Chocoburger105d ago

Play Gravity Rush Remastered first if you haven't already, the stories are linked together. GR 2 is a fantastic game, it has a lot of stuff to see and do. In fact I have purposefully not completed the game 100% because I simply didn't want the game to end. I still have some trophies to collect, and a whole free story DLC chapter to play through.

Gravity Rush 3 would be amazing! But the team that made parts 1 and 2 were shut down, so I don't expect it to happen. This was Jim Ryan's biggest sin of all, shutting down PlayStation Japan Studios. What a shame.

FinalFantasyFanatic105d ago

Why not both? I really like the games and was disappointed we didn't get a third game to finish off the story, but I wouldn't mind a movie either if it's well done. Maybe it'll drum up enough interest to get us that third game.

damn that is aaalot of ppl

id rather have another Gravity Rush game than a movie tbh

DarXyde105d ago

Same. This series really resonates with my gaming spirit. I love these games so much that I got four platinums out of two games. I was always dreading that we would never get another game after Japan Studio's closure, but I'm feeling hopeful in them not giving up on the franchise with this move. My guess is that they're going to use this as a funding point

MrNinosan105d ago

That is the same amount as daily loading screens... never mind

Former Capcom Producer Behind Resident Evil and Killer 7 Opens Up About His New Studio

From IGN: "Following Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi and No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda, popularly known as "Suda51," Capcom veteran Hiroyuki Kobayashi announced his move to NetEase Games back in August this year. Today, NetEase revealed Kobayashi's new studio as GPTRACK50, located in Osaka. At Capcom, Kobayashi worked as the producer on the Resident Evil series as well as Devil May Cry.

“I was at Capcom for 27 years. During my time, the company became a lot bigger and a lot of new staff came in,” Kobayashi told IGN in an exclusive interview.

“I worked on a wide array of titles at Capcom, but I wanted a new challenge,” he explained. “Of course, it’s not like Capcom didn’t allow me to try out new things, but now that the company is a lot bigger, things are different from the way they were when I joined the company as a freshman back in 1995. Everything now needs to be approved and things just take more time to get greenlit. I’m the kind of creator that wants to be able to deliver a new experience while it still feels fresh, and I had been thinking of creating my own studio to make that possible.”"

I'm glad the last bit is "opens up about his new studio" and not "has died."

jznrpg538d ago (Edited 538d ago )

You read my mind . That was the first though I had . So many deaths reported in last couple years . Pleasantly surprised !

NetEase owns his studio is the only bad news but only time will tell what comes of it . If it’s not on PS or Switch I don’t care . If it’s mobile I care even less!

XIII Review by Video Chums

“XIII is a linear first-person shooter with a neat graphical style that offers simple fun akin to a game that belongs in an arcade. However, FPS veterans may be put off due to its linearity and general lack of depth.” - Mary Billington from Video Chums.
