EA Origin: 'Our aim is to be a better version of Steam'

"EA says it wants its Origin download platform to be a better version of all the other portals on the market.

The firm’s senior VP of global ecommerce David DeMartini has also responded to Valve and Steam boss Gabe Newell’s criticism that Origin has yet to do anything ‘super-well’ – adding that he is delighted that the platform is now ‘part of the conversation.’", writes MCV. (David DeMartini, EA, Gabe Newell, Industry, PC, Valve)

Good luck with that.
Solid_Snake37  +   821d ago
Forcing people to use your service to play a single game is not a good start.
Ducky  +   820d ago
Steam does the same thing, so they are not all that different in that regard.
(Go back to CS1.6 when Steam was new)

Actually, Valve doesn't even allow any other digital retailer to sell their games.

Real difference between the two is just that Valve is likeable, while EA isn't.

Not true.

Ducky  +   820d ago
^ I probably should've phrased my statement better. Valve does not allow other digital retailers to sell digital copies of their games.

You can order physical copies of Valve's games online (EA Store, Amazon, BestBuy, etc) but not digital versions of Valve's games.

Considering that the physical copies usually only contain a steam-activatable code (and maybe some pre-loaded files which require a heavy amount of patches), buying physical is just an inconvenient and more expensive method of buying those games compared against digital... with Valve being the only option if you want to buy digital.

True, Steam does have a sort of DRM (not really though) but you can still play offline once you purchase the game you want, which I assume is the same as Origin.

Valve just cares, so gamers care about Valve. EA should probably learn how friendships work...
Linsolv  +   821d ago
Well just start offering semiannual sales of up to 75% off of almost every PC game and then you'll be sorta competitive a little bit.
noxeven  +   821d ago
Hahah oh origin you will never be steam just go the way of impulse and just die. Give in and release bf3 on steam make more money and admit origin was fail

ChrisW  +   820d ago
However Impulse is phenomenally better than Origin...
It's almost sad to see someone comparing them as equals.
aiBreeze  +   821d ago
Lol, well they are failing in their aim. I remember upgrading my PC in December and keeping an eye on both steam and origin sales.. the Origin ones were an embarrassment compared to steam.
Rupee  +   821d ago
Donnywho  +   821d ago
Is there a way they can shutdown steam? Because that's the only way this can happen.
kcuthbertson  +   820d ago

Good One.
Farsendor1  +   820d ago
that might be their ultimate goal but i don't think they are going to reach it.

steam is just overall better origin does a couple of things better but steam is far ahead.
SeekDev  +   820d ago
Their problem is that they're trying to emulate Steam's service in Origin, while they should be innovating their service to be different from Steam so that one must have both because they both do such great things. However, this is EA we're talking about and they won't do that because they don't like pleasing customers.
listenkids  +   820d ago
Never going to happen.
STONEY4  +   820d ago
He just compared Steam and Origin to Myspace and Facebook. So Steam is the Myspace of DD?

Okay EA...
Charmers  +   820d ago
Well for me personally EA are correct they are facebook. I have a facebook account and I never use the thing. I also apparently have an Origin account but have never used Origin so yeah just like facebook for me.
aliengmr  +   820d ago
I guess when your stock price is in free fall you'll say anything. Maybe EA could stop trying to emulate WoW and Steam and do their own thing.
Hal0_0_EmElG  +   820d ago
I think Origin is great , it allows me to chat to my friends and download the latest big EA titles , PROBLEM! ?
WeskerChildReborned  +   820d ago
You make me laugh Origin. Hahaha
snake_eater  +   820d ago
Sup guys do u know when the Steam summer sales starts?ty
Charmers  +   820d ago
It's usually the last week in June. So by all accounts it should start tomorrow. I remember last year it started around the 27th June if my memory serves me.
Farsendor1  +   820d ago
as long as i have been participating in the summer sale it has usually been last thursday of the week. so it could start on the 28th
BattleAxe  +   820d ago
I've got $100.00 locked and loaded and ready to blow on some games during the Steam Summer Sale.

I hope The Assassin's Creed series, The Darkness 2, Crysis 2 and the Witcher 2 all go on sale. I've never played any of the Assassins Creed games, but after seeing the E3 footage of AC3, I gotta get in on this series.

Does anyone know if the control sceme is any good for The Wtcher 2? I heard the Witcher 1's controls were pretty bad.
vortis  +   820d ago

$400 of spending money for the summer sale, bro.

I'm gonna get Arma II: CO and play some DayZ, along with a bunch of other games.
KillerPwned  +   820d ago
Keep smoking that crack..at the moment will you ever believe you are better than steam.
justpassinggas  +   820d ago
Horse. Shit.

EA only started Origin so it could enhance its DRM ability and be an even bigger nuisance than it already is, with its on disc DLC, day 1 DLC, lies, buying and shutting down of good studios.
RevXM  +   820d ago
Well that is a nice goal.
I hope they will work hard trying to get there. while Im very happy with Steam it does need competition to keep evolving and to get better.

Now a question... Will Crysis 3 be available on Steam from launch? Anyone?
mochachino  +   820d ago
I think if EA just focused on making games instead of dominating every corner of the gaming industry they'd wouldn't post losses every year.

They have a lot of very strong franchises but try too hard to be number one in every genre, and marketplace.

If someone is making a dollar anywhere in the industry, EA wants to destroy them and take their place.
0pie  +   820d ago
hahahah no one love you EA... Whatever the hell you do... Everyone will chose the other option.

its sad, but its true.
Dms2012  +   820d ago
I would say that there is a potential for a fanboy war to start between supporters of these 2 services, but it would seem you need actual fans on both sides, not just one.
vortis  +   820d ago
I lol'd. It's so true...

The only people who defend EA are viral marketers.

If someone is defending EA they must work for EA.
f789790  +   820d ago
Well maybe the competition will make Steam revamp it's store to not be organized so idiotically. EA just needs to try.

What's wrong? Browsing by 10 at a time by sliding pages. If you click on a game and use the back button, you've reset the page count! There's also no real way to browse besides genres with 10 items at a time with the most recent first.
vortis  +   820d ago
I agree, there are some limited, stupid searching options for Steam to be as big as it is. But it's cool how you can type in tags in the search field and actually search categories of games by putting in stuff like "LAN +co-op +controller enabled"
Plagasx  +   820d ago
awi5951  +   820d ago
Ea is a dirty cheat. They close down your games servers and make them useless to make you buy the new version thats not any good.
Xristo  +   820d ago
That's like a little league baseball player aiming to be better than A-rod when he grows up....possible? sure...probable? not very likely :P

Steam (to me) is THAT much better than Origin.
Subzero200  +   820d ago
"EA Origin: 'Our aim is to be a better version of Steam'"

lol keep dreaming you idiots especially when you rip people off with the same trash every year.

Steam is the platform!
