I doubt it will b an iPad killer right now. IPad 3 has retina display and the 50 gazillion (That's a researched accurate number as of this morning) ppl who own an iPhone will not switch or buy the surface.
With that being said, this is an awesome product and a step in the right direction. Now, u can say they are late to the party but remember Microsoft's motto, "we will steal ur idea, make it great and then put u out of business with it." See dos, windows, internet explorer, Xbox, kinnect, and now surface. It is a step in the right direction for a few reasons. Many people buy an iPad because they own an iPhone. Well, surface is going to be an extension of most people's pc Is. This is huge. Also, I have always wondered what it would take for a winner to emerge between tablet and laptop. I've always wanted a tablet with a standard OS and more horsepower. The surface is the first product to bridge the gap. And the keyboard is very nice. Unless apple is really working on a virtual keyboard, lol. And third, gaming. Along with their phone, this device will link seemlessly with the over and phone, as well as the new Xbox. Add in smartglass and gamers may just buy in.
It is not an iPad killer just yet. But, if u can't offer retina display etc, might as well offer something new and Microsoft has withe the surface. They are now at the party. Though, if they wanna dance, they better bring some more apps.
MS needs to make Windows Phone more popular and release their own Win8 phone hardware because people like synergy among products - the hundreds of million Android people want Droid Tabs and the hundres of million iPhone users want iPads because they work perfectly with each other run the same OS, have mostly interchangeable apps, etc.
Suface looks really cool, better than iPad in a number of ways but MS should have made a sweet new MS Phone to go with it as well.
I think MS is going to go after the business market first...Apple and Android don't really have a presence there and Blackberry isn't long for this world. Bundling Office with Surface was brilliant, IT departments should be all over this thing.
Only the Intel version is interesting and gives full Backwards Compatibility with win32/apps & previous Windows versions. The Arm chipset version has no Backwards Compatibility with x86 programs/Os.

Seriously thinking of Ubuntu for my next OS.
