There are good games with good sequels, and then there are good games with phenomenal sequels. You know, the sequels that if you want to introduce your friend to the franchise, you will tell them that they can skip right to the second game. It's no easy task, but these are some of the most memorable cases of a sequel far outshining the original.
I Feel Uncharted 2 and AC2 were the best that showed how a good game can have a far superior and phenominal sequel!!!! The best example of that really is those 2 games!!! I'd also through in Batman AC
Glad to see The Witcher 2 and Resident Evil 2 were at least honorable mentions.
Now, the title should be sequels that were better than the 1st. I thought of Bioshock 2 because in my opinion, while it wasn't the industry changer that the 1st was, it was improved in every aspect (except I thought the big sister should have been an end game villain and not throughout). It was a better overall game. My thought was sequels that were able to deliver despite the expectations set by the first. So Arkham city is definitely one.
And while many weren't as happy with uncharted 3 as 2, AC 3 is gonna be insane and much better than 2. I can't wait.

However, I have been very disappointed by the last games in the trilogies: Gears 3, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, Modern Warfare 3 to name a few.
