Sequels That Nailed It | Game Informer

There are good games with good sequels, and then there are good games with phenomenal sequels. You know, the sequels that if you want to introduce your friend to the franchise, you will tell them that they can skip right to the second game. It's no easy task, but these are some of the most memorable cases of a sequel far outshining the original. (Assassin's Creed 2, Guitar Hero II, Just Cause 2, Mega Man 2, PC, PS3, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, Silent Hill 2, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Xbox 360)

Out of all the Games they mentioned
I Feel Uncharted 2 and AC2 were the best that showed how a good game can have a far superior and phenominal sequel!!!! The best example of that really is those 2 games!!! I'd also through in Batman AC

I'd also add Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Arkham City to that list. Otherwise I mostly agree with it.
Glad to see The Witcher 2 and Resident Evil 2 were at least honorable mentions.

I wanted to immediately say mass effect 2 because it took a great selling game and made it a huge selling game and goty but as an RPG fan I will always wonder how good the series could have been had it been a true RPG throughout. That being said, I am surprised by it's omission.

Now, the title should be sequels that were better than the 1st. I thought of Bioshock 2 because in my opinion, while it wasn't the industry changer that the 1st was, it was improved in every aspect (except I thought the big sister should have been an end game villain and not throughout). It was a better overall game. My thought was sequels that were able to deliver despite the expectations set by the first. So Arkham city is definitely one.

And while many weren't as happy with uncharted 3 as 2, AC 3 is gonna be insane and much better than 2. I can't wait.

I know most people will not agree with me but Jak 2 was a really great sequel to the original Jak and Daxter. I know many people preferred the original format but the amount of things they did and the fact that they changed the tone of the game so well without ruining it completely I think should be commended. Not many developers out there could go from light hearted to darker and edgy and still keep the soul of the game alive.I think they really nailed it.

Half-Life 2 is one of the best examples of this and is still extremely relevant today. Another game that I can think of, which is much more recent is The Witcher 2. The change from the first game to the second was dramatic and provided a great sequel. The story was great in comparison. The Witcher 1's story would take the upper hand if it was told better.

Even though it does not have a number 2 next to it: Rockband 3 was the superior music game of the three rockbands. Gears 2, Mass Effect 2, Max Payne 2, Bloodrayne 2, and the forthcoming Epic Mickey 2 and Black Ops 2 are all superior to the original.

However, I have been very disappointed by the last games in the trilogies: Gears 3, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, Modern Warfare 3 to name a few.

Rayman 2 was damn good.

It was generally agreed that Infamous 2 improved on everything from the original game.
