In the summer of 2009, Wizards of the Coast released Magic: the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers, a streamlined version of their popular collectible card game aimed at both veterans of the game as well as potential new players. The game was a smashing success, with over 500,000 downloads. In 2011, they released Duels 2012, which took the successful core of the original, and added in a new archenemy mode. They also tied Duels 2012 in with their summer release of Magic 2012, with cards being featured in both the paper and online aspects, in order to familiarize new players to cards they may see in the real world. Magic: The Gathering — Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is the new annual iteration, and it builds on the success of its predecessors while bringing plenty of new things to the party, including brand new Challenges, skill testing Encounters, and the ever popular Planechase multiplayer format.
