‘When we are on our deathbeds, will we regret the hours we spent playing games?’

The usually-optimistic game designer Jane McGonigal has been thinking about whether those of us who love to play video games will regret it in the end. She keeps meeting people who think gamers will. She keeps meeting people who doubt any of us will wish we played more games.

So...the question she's been asked: "When we are on our deathbeds, will we regret the hours we spent playing games?"

The story is too old to be commented.

Nope. I'm not too old yet, but I think I find a good balance between playing games and general life and the people in it. Games offer entirely new and unique universes to explore, experiences that the majority of us probably have no ability to find in the real world. It's a gateway, and that in itself is something I will never regret having experienced.

... regret about those things we haven't accomplished, for whatever reasons!?

I don't know how I'll look back on those hours I 'wasted' playing videogames, but hopefully I'll be honest enough with myself to admit that I did enjoy those hours, and was probably too lazy to do something else anyway.

regret playing video games? NEVER.. regret having enough free time to read/post comments on N4G ... <maybe>

Asking if someone regretted playing games is like asking someone if he/she regretted doing something the person liked. It's just like watching a movie, reading a book, trekking, fishing etc.

I do regret not praying for world peace though. q:

When I read this title last night, I thought 'why do people always think gamers are wasting their time and lives by playing video games?' It's true that you need to find a healthy balance and not be squirreled away in your house playing video games for 10 hours a day, every day. But for the average gamer, gaming is a hobby just like reading, collecting, and model-building is for others. You never hear about anyone questioning whether those people are wasting their time.

Do what makes you feel good, right up until your death. No one is judging you.

Do what thy will.

joab7771885d ago

Yeah, do what makes u feel good...not! That's relativism rearing its head. Doing what always makes u feel good will cause a lot of pain in life. Difference between joy and pleasure. Pleasure is doing what makes u feel good now and paying for it later. Joy is doing what's right now and enjoying the benefits. Its why we will soon b 20 trillion in debt in the US...make it 50 trillion with unfunded liabilities. Our generation will do whatever it can to put off present pain and suffering, despite the consequences.

Now, I love playing games. I try to never let it interfere with important activities. So far they haven't affected my routine. I have stopped trophy hunting and trying to keep up with my friends. I do not have a family yet so I have more free time than other ppl do, but even I feel guilty sometimes. I just don't want to wake up one day knowing that Rome has burned down around me while I played video games. That being said, its my day off so I'm gonna go play some dragons dogma lol.

Well, they are judging you, but who cares? Certainly not myself, I play games because I think they have a purpose to existing. I guarantee there are plenty of people that would say gaming changed their lives for the better.

So I can't imagine myself on my deathbed thinking about all the time I wasted playing games. In doing that I'd basically be telling those people who've had their lives changed by gaming that they've wasted their time. Which is wrong, mean even.

"no one is judging you" I'm not sure about that buddy. People will always judge each other.

@MariaHelFutura
That saying is straight out of Alister Crowley's satanic The Book of the Law and Anton Levey's Satanic Bible!

And, because of people "doing what they will & what makes them feel good", other people are killed & hurt.

Societies moral fibre has almost totally disintegrated causing people lie, cheat & steal, all in the name of "doing what makes you feel good".

The thing is, most that follow this rule, will learn that when the NWO is ushered in, it will change to, "do what you're told or else you get cut off from society or are killed".

Those that keep doing so, right up until death, will learn & the know the truth if "no one is judging you". Unfortunately, by then it will be too late to change how you've lived your life. Everyone will truly know if they had lived the lie & was mislead or they were right all along.

Your eternal life begins when you've drawn your last breath on this earth. Good luck to you all, the majority will need it!

WOW man I could not agree more with you and I could not have written it better myself.....

Proverbs 14:12;There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Romans 6:21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

There is life after death and that life is eternal...forever...beyond the curtain of time........
I wonder if I myself am not wastiing time on games as much as I enjoy them bcos theres alot more important things in life like a man's soul......my soul..for those that dont believe in Jesus because of this new scientific age....please look up NDEs(Near death experiences)...
You know mankind is the only creature that is concious that it is going to die but still refuses to think about his death.

Thanks for the kind words! When I logged into the site & saw my message icon light up, I thought "he we go again, more hateful messages, because I keeps it real". Thanks again for the wonderful surprise!

You know what's even more interesting about humans refusing to think of death? People will research like crazy, before going on vacation, research before buying a game or going to a movie or play, they will most definitely research before buying a house or car etc.

However, they absolutely refuse to research life after death, most just make general assumptions or take the word of whatever believe system they grew up with (good or bad) or ignore it all together.

I grew up in a Christian home, but refused it when I was old enough to make my own decisions. It wasn't until I finally researched (in depth) for myself and learned the truth... when I finally made my decision to try my best to live a righteous life, the best of my ability, acknowledging the Almighty as the true creator of this virtual world we live in (the real world is in the spiritual realm).

The "near death experiences" is an EXCELLENT place to start actually, especially the ones that were ex satanists. You'll get some real insight into how they (the satanic camp) are planning to take over the world.

If you challenge GOD to "show you the truth" and follow the breadcrumbs, he'll open your eyes wide open. What's the worst that can happen? Personally I learned the whole truth about both sides and was able to make an informed decision, as opposed to flying by the seat of my pants. I'm actually a more happier person now!

I dont want to think of my death.

Bathyj1885d ago

Not me. My only regret will be that I didnt make it til Playstation 12.

HacSawJimThugin1885d ago

Me too...I can only imagine what games will look like when my son is my age; or his son for that matter. He is 1 by the way.

Bathyj1885d ago

Congrates. He must still have that new baby smell. (No sarcasm intended BTW)

Yeah it boggles the mind how far games have come in the 30+ years I've been gaming. Who knows how much progress they might make by the time your kid is grown.

raWfodog1885d ago

Yeah, I'm going to be playing video games for as long as I can remember how to turn on the console and figure out what all the little buttons do :)
