Sony’s free-to-play online shooter Planetside 2 will pack 2,000 players in an arena (interview)

First-person shooter games have become a multibillion-dollar market. But no one has really succeeded in the massively multiplayer online space with high-end hardcore shooters. Sony Online Entertainment hopes to change that with the upcoming launch of Planetside 2. John Smedley, head of SOE, believes that the game will set a new bar for online shooters, with more than 2,000 people fighting together in the same region. He also believes that the free-to-play business model for the game will attract a much larger audience than is typical for an MMO. Smedley also feels that Sony Online learned some important lessons from last year’s hacker attack, which brought down the company’s network of games for weeks. We caught up with Smedley at the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) video game conference in Los Angeles. Here’s an edited transcript of our interview. (PC, Planetside 2)

That sounds insane.
ardivt  +   666d ago
it is insane
64 players on bf3 already make your brain explode because of all the action happening around you xD
TopDudeMan  +   666d ago
Yeah, and it's in space, so that makes it even better.

I'm so gonna crash/run over people with a jet/chopper or whatever you call those hybrid flying vehicles.

Semi-chub.

Right in the description:
" with more than 2,000 people fighting together in the same region"

2,000 is the alpha limit, theyve stated they could practically have an unlimated amount of players at once.
kneon  +   666d ago
This could be awesome. But they had better have a command structure in place such as in MAG otherwise it will just be chaos.
ninjahunter  +   666d ago
There is squad based command and global command,
Squads are about the size of a normal FPS team, and global command is the top players of your faction having the ability to send commands to everyone on your faction. I believe its through a mic. I could be wrong about how squad command works, however, the original planetside was able to conjure massive tank armies and such for big organized battles, so I think it will be fine.

I want this to be the first F2P game to premier on ps4 when its released
thorstein  +   666d ago
How about Planetside 3? Figure the 4 will be announced next year but actually come out in 2014.
ChronoJoe  +   666d ago
I would be more interested in this than Dust 514... if only there were a PS3 version :(
Kamikaze135  +   666d ago
Nice. I just hope it works as well as it sounds. Will definitely be looking forward to this.
Moncole  +   666d ago
It's amazing what PC games can do. I was playing Mount and Blade Warband and made a huge battle with more than 2000 characters fighting.
Honest_gamer  +   666d ago
hope it turns out ALLOT better than one of my most highly disipointed games of all time aka M.A.G, however since it's free to play i'll give it a chance since it wont cost me nothing
ThanatosDMC  +   666d ago
You're wrong Brook. It wasnt a disappointment. Well, unless you're one of the cannon fodders then i might understand.
GroundsKeeperJimbo  +   666d ago
He must have played Raven with me. :]
ginsunuva  +   666d ago
Wasn't the first Planetside 1000 players?
PS3gamer4life  +   666d ago
not for ps3? that sucks sony put this on ps3 now
Letros  +   666d ago
It's beyond the PS3's limitations, so much for Play B3yond...
GamingTruth  +   666d ago
it still is playing beyond considering pc still cant do ps3 exclusives so yes play beyond is still on
Zha1tan  +   666d ago
PS3 cannot handle that many players, MAG was a push at 250 players for the system.

Finally glad to see some PC devs pushing the platform again to the true heights of what it can do instead of holding it back.

im going to laugh when sonys next gen platform blows anything pc has and will have outta the water
Zha1tan  +   666d ago
Because the idealogy behind my comment was to strike at PS3.

But since you have opned the flood gates im going to laugh when its GPU cant possibly match the top cards at that time, see PCs are all different, they are not stagnant like consoles.

PS4 may well be more powerful than MOST PCs for the first year but the following year new GPUs will be out were even mid range GPUs will far supass the PS4s.
GamingTruth  +   666d ago
yeah mag was a push? i doubt it since zipper stated they were only scratching the surface of what they could do with ps3, and if its a ps4 maybe, but if its simply a platform and its to upgradeable then pc is screwed for as many years as the platform is going to stay out
