Crappy Father's day: A Celebration of Jecht

It isn’t hard to find a lousy father in a video game. From Big Boss to Hojo to the King of all Cosmos, there are plenty of examples of dads who are at best clueless and at worst villains. The Final Fantasy series is full of characters who have been orphaned, abandoned, or severely damaged by bad dads.

big boss not really a dad. in fact hes a bad example. not of a father figure but of a father by definition. the genetic material taken for les enfants terrible was done without him knowing about it and he didnt raise them or solidus

Jecht is an easy to understand father. He antagonized Tidus purposely. He did it to toughen him up and prepare him for more difficult challenges life would throw at him. If you look at Tidus' parents, I'd say his mom was the worst of the two. She ignored Tidus whenever Jecht was around, and couldn't even stay alive for her son, choosing instead to accept death than life without Jecht. At least Jecht was trying to get back to his son, and even made the biggest sacrifices he could to try and save his friend. Jecht then planned for Tidus to be the one to stop him, knowing that if anyone hated him enough it would be his own son. He knew that Tidus would stop at nothing to destroy Sin once he found out that Sin was his father, and Jecht was right. It shows that he knew his son better than anyone thought, it also shows that Tidus is in many ways just like his dad.

10 is probably tied for my favorite FF game and as you can tell by my avatar, Jecht is my favorite character. Everything about him screams badass that, IMO, surpasses Auron. Plus it's not hard to see that Jecht, although he had bad habits and wasn't the BEST dad, everything he did when it came to Tidus was in preparation for Tidus' future. Jecht was also very smart too, he pretty much planned the events of FFX himself. From going to Dream Zanarkand (which actually exists in the real world of Spira in the far western seas) to get his son, to communicating his desires to Auron so that Tidus would know what needed to be done, to the knowledge that his son actually WOULD do what was necessary in the end. Jecht isn't given enough credit for how awesome he really is.

I always wanted FFX-2 to be a prequel. Playing as Young Auron, Jecht, and Braska. Would have been SO much better than what we got. I also would have loved to see a fight between Jecht and Seymour inside Sin and see how Seymour got his a$$ whooped by Jecht.

Funny you mention that FFX-2 prequal idea...as it's stated that how FFX-2 was originally intended....until Wada came into the picture.

The only flaw in your is that Jecht knew nothing of Sin or the "Real World" prior to the emotional abused he heaped on Tidus.

Not that it could have been all that much in the first place - Tidus was just a selfish sissy boy.

FF10 was garbage. Just as dull & linear as FF13.

Except ten had more window dressing. Provided world and character definition through interaction, not just exposition.
