God give me a break "as someone who surrounds himself with games and gaming news, I can easily see past the candy coating and flashy costume dressing to see the games beneath all those E3 demos and I like to think I can fairly judge what the game actually has going on for it without getting swayed by the pomp and show of a nice demo or trailer or gameplay video."
with out playing the Game one iota?
Hows that sparky?
Is it just me in my opinion or is it that the many of gamer's today have become completely so jaded in the Hobby of Gaming in general. And it's thanks to many times the press to thank for that.
To me what ever happened to the Idea that gaming stemmed from a freaking Hobby? That it was all about playing the game just for the fun of it?
where is the carefree part of just enjoying the game for the experience?
just like the Movie industry; the more it became all about the Money, the less it's about the entertainment and what was or used to be a Hobby.
Its now all about the competition, this game is better than this game..and im going to knock this game point's because it's Multiplayer is not better than this game.
Which is quite funny because every game is it's own game, Can the people just play the game for the sake of playing it for the experience anymore?
What Used to be a Hobby has descended into one big Pissing match, unless your game is "better" or has all the content of this other game, it's a flop or it's just not that great of a game. Everyone is not the same; their ideas in making and developing games need to be their own game if every game was the same than what's the freaking point?
well today's games need to have this..and this..and this because this game is now the benchmark for what a game should be.
And that right there is why Hobby's have in my opinion are no longer Hobby's they became more of about the Money than the heart and the soul and essence of a Hobby!
Unfortunately I live in South Africa so we don't really get access to E3 or GamesCom or anything like that where you can actually play a game that's in development. We have our own expo called RAGE but that's usually just a chance to play what everyone else already did at E3 and it's in October.
So I rely mostly on gameplay videos or developer walkthroughs and while I believe I can see the game for what it is, these bits of gameplay are still put out by the developer to show off the very best that the game has to offer even if it doesn't necessarily extend any further than the little sequence you see in the demo or video.
Besides, very few people get to play in-development games this early on and they are sold on the game based solely on what developers have shown them. I was referring to judging games pre-release before there's a downloadable demo or even a release.
I wish gaming was still a fun hobby but it generates so much revenue that games themselves inevitably became just another product to be marketed, sold and then exploited for as much money as possible.
However, developers really do need to be competitive, maybe not to the degree that some are but gaming is an expensive hobby and hardly anybody can afford to buy all the games they want so there is this constant vying for the gamer's money. That's why we have this perpetual brinkmanship going on and why few developer's just make a game to be good and fun. It has to be beat the opposition in some way.
This is what I love about developers such as Valve and Quantic Dream. They don't care about competing with everyone else. They've removed themselves from the rat race and simply make the games they want to and ensure taht those games are good.
You're never going to have a truly innovative, enjoyable game if you're sitting there the whole time with a checklist ticking off all the things that you've put in your game which the competition has in theirs.
I try to take the good out of a game but because this hobby is so expensive, you feel cheated when a game isn't all that good and it isn't really worth that money you just spent on it. This is why you have to have a discerning taste because developers don't always give you your money's worth as it were and sometiems you deserve better than what they're offering.
The similarities between the gaming industry and Hollywood are just too stark and it saddens me because while there will still be some great entertainment out there, most of what's on offer will just be generic crap designed to make money.
