An apparently leaked strategy document from Microsoft created in September 2010 describes the next Xbox as an always on DVR/media server with hardware backwards compatibility, and upgraded Kinect and, eventually, Augmented Reality glasses and cloud gaming.

Do people not know the difference between an N and an M?
Basically it suggests that 2013 we receive a new xbox and Kinect(so tv and motion gaming will still be a big focus for them), then 2015 comes along and they release glasses.Suggesting another Kinect moment where they become the main focus.
Don't get me wrong the glasses are pretty cool, i mean Google are heading for glasses, Sony already have the VR headset so it makes sense however not for gaming.. in my opinion anyway.
Don't get me wrong there's chance these are false so i'll take it with a grain of salt.
I think too many people are stuck in a repeat others thoughts world. There will come a time when controllers aren't held in your hand. Kinect 1 may be relative to 8-bit gaming. But it is the right direction.
Ardivt is right about this next generation. If cloud gaming is the future, we don't need anything over the top. Even though more than 8 times the power is a huge bump up.
Why do people not want tech to advance?? People love futuristic movies, programmes etc but how are we ever gonna progress to that if people are so quick to dismiss it???
Personally I hate the way m$ treats their loyal fanbase but in regards to the possibilitys surrounding the glasses, Mind=Blown!!!
Heck, Kinect + VR Glasses with a controller equals pure gaming bliss!!! :D
2015 can't come soon enough. f'yeah!!!
How can Kinect be in HD?
I hate this development!
If I follow you what you meant by cloud gaming, as in using multiple consoles/PC connected together to function as one supercomputer (invented by Philip Emeagwali [had to plug that one]), won't be possible to make a "megaworld" until computers can process with no delay, possibly a language which assists with the lack of delays, and the internet will have no perceptible slowdown; else, lets say, when you're fighting someone in a less than perfect cloud game with a near-photorealistic alien world (processed by not-so perfect computers) it will go something like:
He punched me!
Wait, that's a foot, and he's several people.
I'm dead.
Or if you're on a slope on skis and the snow all of a sudden turns into a cavern because you're sitting in New York, NY; and that piece of geography was supposed to be rendered by a PC/console in Miami, Floria but since that person turned his hardware off, that bit was transferred to someone in Minsk, Russia (I'm sure there will be clouds within clouds, but right now, I'm going for the extreme).
I could be wrong, but that's what I hear some people talking about if you're talking about multiple computers rendering very large, complex worlds using cloud computing.
EDIT:
I just read Spydiggity's post; that's pretty much it. :)
You can clearly see this roadmap (which is a humongous leak from MS) that they are constantly pushing. Some of the things in here is so f'in amazing, I would hate to be Nintendo right now with Wii U. Their strategy is so cohesive I don't think anyone else can pull this off due to the deep integration with Windows 8.
The hardware also looks in-line and worthy of a next generation upgrade. Even has full hardware BC!
Dont hold your breath.
I can see all types of injurys :/. Opps sorry Granny didn't mean to CATCH YOU WITH THAT RIGHT HOOK THERE.
hopefully the world won't end before I eat my favourite dinner tonight :)
meatballs ha so silly
Minimum disk size is 250GB.
Still can not copy Media from external devices. Only stream it over the Network or USB.
A big drive then becomes pretty useless for people who buy mostly physical copies unless they also want to install their games to the storage drive.
Wow... Deja vu.
Joking aside, I think DVR isnt such a bad idea.
The PSX had it and in these days how much would it add to cost to implement basic DVR function?
I am not sure how it would be done though, either with one more HDMI port for input wich sounds silly because of HDCP or a COAX input from you satelite and somewhere you can insert the subscriber card or youd be reliant on streaming channels and stuff via internet... and in that case the 360 would be qualified as a DVR to.
All in all I think it is very unlikely that there will be a console with DVR functionality.
HDMI have made recording gameplay footage impossible on current consoles (you know hook up a recorder doesnt work so well with HDMI these days) and I think the next consoles will have DP/thunderbolt and/or HDMI output, most likely the latter.
So then the games must support recording and the systems must allow you to move and copy those files.
HDCP policy is a bitch.
Damn, you are one jealous fanboy...
They are not useless on a gaming console as it saves me from having an extra box by my TV and allows me to use the xmb when watching TV. It also more conveniently allows me to enter a game.
I've been using PlayTV since it came out and have loads of space left on my HDD. It's absolutely fantastic.
Please refrain from writing stupid comments again. Thank you.
Consoles aren't just about games anymore. They're becoming entertainment/social hubs for the home. DVR is just another part of that philosophy. If MS or Sony don't innovate, they'll be left behind. They are going to add more and more new stuff to their "gaming" machines whether you like it or not.
Could you explain the things making it more expensive?
And could someone explain where it say there will be a Blu-ray player.
"The block diagram below shows a system with a 6-8 core x86 or ARM-based CPU, 4GBs of RAM, a separate ARM-based, dual core embedded CPU for low power media functionality, AND the original tri-core PowerPC CPU from the 360 for backwards compatibility. Despite all that they are targeting a system that will operate at 120 watts, a little more than half the power dissipated by the launch 360 and PS3. They are also targeting a $299 price point, including Kinect packed in with each console, and a launch in 2013."
If they indeed go with Arm Core processor's and chipsets, that are SOC's I would say there is a very good chance it would be that cheap to put out.
Sony may infact be using the very same type of Arm Core chipset's.
Arm powered chipsets are some of the best Low cost low watt/clock cycle processor's you can get in the Consumer electronic's market. and by the time Microsoft and Sony are ready to release their systems the Multiple core CPU/GPU hybrid chipsets that power the systems would be cheaper and very cost effective and support standard wide DirectX 11+ in all released smartphones,Tablets and Smart TV's.
Microsoft and Sony do not in my opinion need to look at Intel or AMD for processor's when Arm right now will do what they need these systems to do.
just look at the PSVita as an example:
Quad core CPU and Quad core GPU off the shelf chipset parts designed by Arm. That is exactly why the PSVita could be priced the way it did. Sony's R&D Cost's were much lower, but think about something like the new iPad, the PSVita has an Upgraded ver. of the exact same chipset that's in the new iPad.
these Arm chipsets can run full desktop OS's run advanced Shader Model 4.0+ all on cpu/gpu Chips that go into Mobile phones. we are talking chipsets that can do 4xMSAA
On hardware that's frankly once again going into consumer electronics. This is not like the space for PC's the consumer electronic's market is not made for upgrading all the component's of the machine. Some yes but not everything like you can in the PC. That's why Microsoft and Sony can use Arm powered chips and make cheaper systems but really not loose the quality in making good games, because these system SOC's can use advanced shader models that the current desktop PC's uses along with the advanced APi's also.
will the PC be more robust of course that's a no brainer. but that's the point is it. you are not trying to make a device for the PC market here your making it for the consumer electronic's market. is there overlap?
yes there is because these new systems can Handle full desktop OS's does not mean they are being designed for that in mind. Though it does allow you to make low cost embedded PC's for the consumer market which Microsoft is supporting this generation with Windows 8 being released. There is still plenty of thing's the desktop PC market has that these systems for the consumer electronic market does not.
But that's what they were not going for in the design of the machines for this market and that's entertainment consumer electronic's.
The rest will power off.
I just don't see Microsoft doing this for under an amount that will equal a profit at some stage in the first two years.
Kinect itself carries a $150 price tag for consumers. Kinect 2 would be more expensive to produce.
Production of new parts/software is pricy. If you are not covering them with a profit you are losing money. It doesn't take much to add that up. $300 bucks is not a price I see happening unless Microsoft really wants to cut into the market while taking a heavy loss.
They do know PS4 is coming while Sony is recovering from taking loss with PS3 due to their get Blu-Ray to everyone plan and WiiU will be cheapest console with a year's head start. X360 gained nearly 10 Million or so units shipped or sold within its launch year ahead of everyone else. Microsoft is aiming to put a strain on Sony while reaching for people from the WiiU crowd that will exist with that low cost. It will still burden them with heavy losses if true.
Who said MS was going to put Windows 8 on the next Xbox?
That would be pretty pointless for a game console/media hub. They'll create a stripped down OS that will only do what is needed for the next Xbox.
Yes it will cost them money but that's no different for any console manufacturer - that's just part of the costs for developing the console. How many times have MS charged for 360 dash updates?
You are both wrong. It is common for different departments or divisions within the same company to bill each other for goods or services rendered.
Plus having a all in one machine better than having 4 diffident types of devices in your living room.
so true thats why i have a ps3 for those hardcore games
if you want news researched by paid jounalists then go to a new site only. there are thousands of them and they all have the exact same news. just go there
That and Microsoft might got someone to do that job that knew how to properly format a document lol.
ource or it didn't happen.
A quick look through posting for the patent office show most of this stuff has been public knowledge for a long time, its just patent trolling, this is mostly speculation by some keen fan at best.
If any of it is true, which seems likely, its nothing more than an educated guess and a fabrication, not fact or rumour.
If you follow one of alt links it has some images one is of the windows 8 box I interface by the looks of it, there's some other cool images there 2.
4 gigs of Ram is a win in my opinion, Bly Ray, DVR, what more could you want really? I mean aiming for $299 is a great thing in my opinion.
They will want it to appeal to a wide audience and they also want to get people to buy one just for media, if they do the $99 Xbox and the service plan as well, look out.
Ive owned 360 and ps3 since launch and have used my 360 for gaming and my ps3 for media streaming but so far the news is steering me towards ps4 for gaming next gen and xbox for media, or maybe pass on the xbox all together.
Which is a good thing from a gamers view at least.
Microsoft is at least giving us BC, which means we can keep all the games we have now and still use them.
Gonna be interesting to see if Sony did abandon the Cell and if they did, they wont be able to offer BC. That could give an added edge to the 720.
CPU = 8 core CPU. Main CPU power comes from 6 ARM/x86 cores. Meanwhile 2 cores are working in the background all the time noted as "Always On". IBM makes ARM CPUs now? Oh yes they do actually. Possible IBM/ARM design blend mixed in? If so there should be about 32 threads to toy with in this system.
GPU is built into the CPU entirely. So is this another AMD APU powered system as Sony is rumored to have?
4 GB DDR4. I think DDR4 might be a little pricey at that time, but 4 GB shouldn't cost to much.
Overall sounds decent. Windows 8 on the system and still selling it under $300 bucks doesn't sound possible. More like $600 bucks I am thinking.
I believe this was the spec sheet for the rumoured 2012 720 release (as talked about by Arthur gies on the rebel fm podcast), this is the APU/SOC design (ign rumour) and I also believe MS have changed the specs now that it's releasing in 2013. I really hope the ps4 and 720 are comparable spec wise, although epics comments about pushing console manufacturers more may also relate to this. I really hope ms release a 1.5tflop+ console, it needs to last quite a few years.
Looks completely fake, I doubt MS would use 720
And look it's got a image of it too that looks like a DVD player, really?
And the specs 4 x 6x games Xbox 360
What language is that for a American base company?
Sent from my Xperia Ray
Yip thinking the same thing, the language, the whole presentation, FAKE.
Also, nobody noticed this thing is suposed to have the Xenon in it as well?
LOL WTF.
6-8 cores, another 2 cores, plus 3 PPC cores for "backwards compatibilty".
Thats 13 Cores.
FAAAAAAKE.
After page 8, thye forgot to even put the "confidential" watermark.
No way in hell. Unless MS is suddenly being run by idiots.
"No Full Fideity AAA + Kinect Games"
Thats not even a sentance, nor does it make any sense.
Kinect wasnt even launched.
"Cant run "always on" low power state".
LOL Whut? Dont tell the current Xbox it cant do that (because it can).
Also they keep mesisng up the time line, the much rumoured galss are supposed to make a 2014 timeline, then later they are shown as 2013.
"Additional answers for Todd"
ROFL, wow why do people make so much time making these and then screwing them up with "what is the difference between building on non Microsoft devices vs non microsoft devices".
Err nothing.
Like MS is ever going to let you give a presentaion where Microsoft doesnt have a capital M.
If it aint fake, this guys shouldnt be asked to make presentations again.
Bits are from here:
http://nukezilla.com/2012/0...
But clealry a different document as they talk about stuff not mentioned in here.
I'll check out the new Kinect but if it's not a 1:1 experience which can track more positions I won't be investing and again if MS stray away from the core any more I'll just wait for the PS4
1) how can that wattage be possible?
2) If the launch 360s ran hot.. how hot is this gonna get?
P.S : it was Project Natal at that time...
so BS document
And all the CPU cores described are small, low power models. The GPUs are also pretty modest.
here, have another troll bubble
