SWTOR and the End of Subscription MMORPGs

With Star Wars: The Old Republic looking at a fully free-to-play approach, the days of subscription-based MMORPGs are dead and gone. (Industry, PC, Star Wars:The Old Republic, World of Warcraft)

I always wonder why don't some companies do like NCsoft does with GW and just add an microtransaction shop.

This missed opportunity really blows my mind. Really, what other companies come out with a retail release game with a one-time cost, but allow the online interactions to be free-to-play? No one but them. Insane.

There are various companies.

Who else, may I ask? I've been out of the MMO scene for some time...

Not many that I see.

Although a few Free to play games use all real money. You can earn it in game as well. Which is a different model, but one I support.

What GW's has is the most consumer friendly way to ever get into a MMO game.

100 % Free to play with microtransactions just guarantees that there is an audience. Not necessarily a group of people with a passion to keep playing the game.

they should have done this from the start, Buy the game then play for free, use micro trans for vanity crap, then all major updates into mini expansions for sale, and just do the balancing of game for free/bugs ect

Couldn't agree more. Launching any MMO with monthly payments in today's market is madness.

Lol it's funny how high the development budget was for this yet most of the money went on voice acting. Some idiots at EA/BW actually thought the recipe for success was to create a fully voiced over watered down version of WoW in space with the star wars license. Instead what we get is an mmo with a semi decent story with LOTS of tedious conversions and no soul.

Been saying that for years before the game came out. If it was that obvious to me, how is it that NO ONE at BioWare had the foresight to see how the game would turn out?

EA tried to be greedy and thought the Star Wars license would sell the game and forgot about gameplay
