The Final Fantasy series is one of the most significant franchises in video game history, responsible for numerous games that were both profound and critically adored. The series is also a veritable road map for how console role-playing games have progressed through multiple console generations, from its birth on the NES to later successes on Sony's consoles. Though fans of the franchise will argue until they run out of breath about which of the many great Final Fantasy games is the best, the name that frequently rises to the top of those discussions is the franchise's most influential game, Final Fantasy VII.
indeed, as gamers, we were the lucky one.
lol Sorry but that's rubbish. I was born in 1988 and FFVII is one of the best games I have ever played! I played it when i was 13 and it was my first RPG.
FF7 was the biggest thing for me back in the day. Couldn't imagine my gaming life without it. Killed Ruby and Emerald etc. Great times :´)
i'm really glad to hear that.
Sure, it paved the way for a explosion in jrpg's, but no game has really captured how big FF7 was at that time. It's a lot harder for people that started at FFX or ME to go back and really appreciate what the game meant.
I was born in '82 I bought FFVII, with money I earned, when it came out. The only way it was better than a hand-full of other games was in the graphics.
You say its hard for people that didn't play games when VII came out to really appreciate what it did to the genre? By the same token, it's hard for kids that started playing RPGs when VII came out to fully understand what massive harm it did to RPGs.
FF VII isn't even in my top 20 RPGs, just because all of the crap it spawned. I've been playing games for decades, my daughter is starting at a young age, I love all kinds of games, but FF VII was made for people that couldn't handle other RPGs. It was dumbed down and the story was crap. If you have to go on forums to "understand" what was going on in the game and find the hidden meaning, then the story was crap.
I'm an older gamer and Snes was my RPG haven
Final fantasy VII wqas epic though
After leveling up Aerith...Old sephy kilss her!!!
DAMN YOU!!!! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!
It's the only game I'm aware of that is still played thousands of years after it was created.
A thousand years from now I think people will still play chess.
FF7 was epic
FF8 had so much improvements it's impossible to call bad
FF9 was one of my favorites in the series but largely overshadowed by the PS2 release
Everyone likes FF10,
FF12 is another of my favorites but it was different so got some hate (although it is one of the most well produced games in the series)
and FF13 for all it's hate we all still like to play through it.
8 was ok I just hated rinoa
9 was superb I loved feel of the era .
10 was enjoyable brilliant but lame twist
12 I couldn't even finish
13 I didn't get half way through.
Really vibrate what has happened to the series
Were there other great games before and after it? Sure
Yet will there ever be a game that will remain so relavent and keep people talking even after all this time? Probably not to FFVII's extent.
I think that awards this game the title.
Final Fantasy VII was a revolutionary game on an equally revolutionary console the PSX
just as PSX made console gaming legit FFVII made RPG or JRPG legit
Back in the days when Square was Square: a super pure creative force.
I have played FF VI, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV, Breath of Fire, Chrono Cross, Albert Odyssey, Secret of Mana etc ... to death .... but imho FF VII had more impact on gaming and the masses than all of these combined.
does that mean that people dont think i like ffvi better?
I feel the exact same way.I'm a huge nintendo nerd and yet FF7 is still my fav game of all time, that says a lot right there.
Honestly even my favorite ff game is not based on nostalgia(the first time i played it was on gba in 2006 AFTER i played ff7-12)
And as much as love ffvi,i would never say it's best game ever(Or worse yet claim that no game will ever top it) claiming any game is the best game is silly because your comparing rpgs to fpses platformers to fighting games.
You can't Fairly compare two unique genres it's literally like comparing apples to oranges. However comparing two games within the same genre is a much more fair comparsion.
You can claim x game is the best rpg or y game is the best fighter but to say game x or y is the best game ever is asinine.
So I disagree.
final fantasy 6 is by far the best, Wondering why square won't remake 6
Anyway, nothing wrong with that. I love FF7 and it was also MY first JRPG but having played FF6 afterwards, I have to say it was a superior game. Genuinely one of the most depressing experiences ever but fantastic nonetheless.
i highly disagree with the
"The Greatest Games of All Time: Final Fantasy VII"
for me FF3 ( FF VI JP)is the top
but of all time... I have all generations under my belt so the list of games is massive....
but to stay true to how and why i love games, we will use the one thing that makes a game epic and keeps you playing...
Replay value! could have been PSO on DC, Chronotrigger and the 10 endings... could be Super SmashTV arcade... the list is vast but there's that one game that came to mine, RE4 GCN... mercenaries... 144 hit combo
Xenogears
Suikoden II
Parasite Eve
Metal Gear Solid
Gran Turismo
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Vagrant Story
TEKKEN
Chrono Cross
Tomb Raider
That's some of the games I consider deserve to be in the pantheon of the best of the best of all time each with it's own history recognition & fans.
I am from EU JRPGs was non-existent back then when I buy my SNES, most games released only in US and we never saw them here so most ppl didn't even know what JRPGs is, so I didn't start playing JRPGs until I buy my first PSX (I say the first because I change in total 3 after all of them die on me from extensive play).
In my opinion, of course.
Breath of Fire, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears. To me, all these games were better. Not saying VII is bad, but I've played BOFIII at least three times for each time for each time I've played FFVII, and LOD at least four times per. And that's not even getting into its successor, FFVIII, which I've put more playing time into than any other game I own(200+ in games like Dragon Age, .hack, and FFX).
And that's just from that era, and not including others like Lunar.
For me, it's a great game, but it's not one of the greatest.
But if you did mean VI(which was called III in north america until later) Then i agree.
I'm going to have to start FF7 again sometimes and I'll make sure not to make the same mistake again :)
It was a very human experience that most people could relate to. They could relate to the characters. They could relate to the world around them. They could even relate to the stories the game had to offer. So going on this journey with these characters was like being there with the characters every step of the way.
How can Square have such difficulty understanding humanity? It's like it's been hit or miss with these sequels. I've been able to connect with the earlier titles much easier due to their lack of graphics, leaving more to the imagination.
Bringing that up...it could be one of the biggest factors for Final Fantasy's success...the ability to imagine. Voices weren't added to the dialogue until Final Fantasy X. It may be the reason books can be so much more successful than their movie counterparts. In Final Fantasy VII every character talked through you, the player. Therefore bringing their spirit alive through the player's own spirit. It's hard to do that when the graphics and voices complete that imagination for you.
Not to say it will always lead to failure. Instead it leads to a commitment to reality. Personally I think it increases the chances of gamers not connecting to thier characters. Could you imagine a Final Fantasy VII remake where Cloud is given a voice that you didn't imagine? More often than not, gamers will become disappointed as each and every gamer that played that game generated their own voice...and that voice became strongly generated from their feelings.
It's pointless to continue the reasons in hopes Square will someday understand. It's not like they will see this and make a great "hit" once again. Personally I think they believe their success lies in making great graphics with features the masses will enjoy. It's sad for me to say that the "spirit" of Final Fantasy is lost and likely will never be found again.
