Is 3D Gaming Dying Out?

It seems we're hearing about 3D less and less. Was it even mentioned at any of the major E3 conferences this year? I can't recall it if it was. This used to plague the front of our gaming news sites and be plastered on the front of all of our favorite games, hell, Sony even released a TV specifically for it, but now, it seems as if the trend is dying off. I'm not sure if dying is the right word. Cementing? Dissipating? Drifting away into a sea of gaming gimmicks to forever be forgotten? (3D Gaming, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Not necessarily, I think it has made it's mark as a optional feature for gaming like voice chat. It's a way to enhance the experience. I dislike the 3DS 3D screen sometimes especially outside. The sunlight makes it really hard to see the image even with 3D off!

It never really started on consoles, they lack the processing power. The only 3D games that didn't look jaggy and low res were Crysis and Crysis 2 and apparently they weren't true 3D, whatever that means.

It hard to enjoy the 3D when the game looks and runs terrible but when it works it definitely adds a lot to the immersion imo.

In games like Batman AC it is a welcome addition. If implemented well it really adds to the experience.

That said, I still think it's overpriced (I bought my 3D setup at great prices though).

Uncharted 3 did a really good job with it. Along with Wipeout HD and Super Stardust. A lot of titles have too slow of a framerate, and it can lead to headaches. Next gen I feel it will truly start to shine.

I really recommend you try playing in PC if you want a real 3D experience.
I also have headaches without 60fps in 3D (120 real). And I hate the blurriness sub-HD 3D.

The only downside to 3D is the lack of support by some developers.
That said, there's a lot of great 3D games:
Batman 1 & 2, The witcher 2, Battlefield, Skyrim (modded), Crysis, Portal are among the very best I've played. Of course there are many more, but I haven't seen them myself.

I don't think it's dying out but it was never set to revolutionize the industry anyway. It's just a new option. Like 7.1 surround sound. It's a nice option if you've got it but never going to be necessary for the experience, so most people won't bother until at least tvs are naturally all 3D ready.

Exactly, it's an option. There was a time it was so uncommon that it was worth mentioning and was even a selling point to some extent.

But right now it's no longer news worth. Maybe a note on game preview/review, but not news on it's own. Don't mean it's dying.

If not talking about a tech means it's dead, I guess that analog stick support and polygonal graphics died with the PS1, after which those became standard and no one talked about anymore.

heh, you know I haven't read a good rumble article in a while ;)

i guarantee 90% of the games next gen will be 3d compatible. as for the rest of this gen, it has slowed down since it's hard to do well with already strapped power, but there are more than a few upcoming big titles that are 3d--epic mickey 2, god of war ascension, bioshock infinite, sports champions 2, littlebigplanet karting, sly cooper 4, tekken tag 2, etc

3DS knows how to do it. everything else just doesn't work.

No one wants to pay $100+ dollars for glasses that might end getting broken or lost.
Sucitta  +   1216d ago
the 3D on 3DS is weak compared to the 3D on a 55' LG passive. The two aren't even comparable.

glasses free 3D that you see on 3DS just ads depth with no pop out like you experience in theaters or with passive home big screens.
gamerben  +   1215d ago
That doesn't mean that the technology of the 3DS can't improve over time.

Of course it's going to be weak, I mean, It's a portable device that isn't going to be far from your face, it has to be a bit weak.

Truthly they can't get rid of it now end of the day. Went to see Prometheus on launch and again the next day with a mate that wanted to see it one the first ocassion 3D, second stanard def.

Though second time round it did not take away from me enjoying the movie again i much prefered the 3D experence and for me its in many cases the same with games.
GuyThatPlaysGames  +   1216d ago
I believe it is. I said this right after 3D was the "next big thing" to be released. Of course I'm right because not even a year and a half later, it seems that the push for 3D and the audience is kind of nowhere to be found. I'm not bashing 3D at all, I just knew that it was a fad that would quickly die out.

It looks good but hurts the eyes a bit.

the fact that last E3 sony devoted basically their entire conference to 3D, yet at this years there was literally NOTHING about 3D speaks volumes, since sony were the ones forcing it on everyone so they could sell TVs.

the reason 3D wont take off is because for a game to be in 3D they have to significantly reduce the graphics. if it can be made to look good in 3D, it would look twice as good without 3D.

take a look at these comparison pics of Uncharted 3 in 2D and 3D:

2D: http://images.eurogamer.net...
3D: http://images.eurogamer.net...

the 3D has the image quality and texture resolution of a bad PS2 game.

3D is and always has been a gimmick for video games. it keeps popping its head up again when manufacturers think they can make a quick buck, then it goes away again when people realise its not worth it.

for movies, well after seeing prometheus in 3D, im a huge fan. that is how 3D should be done, looked absolutely incredible.

The only people really pushing 3D is Nvidia with 3D Vision
black911  +   1216d ago
I jist got a 3d tv. Once they become more cheaper more people will adapt.
TheGamingArt  +   1216d ago
With more processing power next gen, I think it will become a huge push again. I love my 3D tv!
