It seems we're hearing about 3D less and less. Was it even mentioned at any of the major E3 conferences this year? I can't recall it if it was. This used to plague the front of our gaming news sites and be plastered on the front of all of our favorite games, hell, Sony even released a TV specifically for it, but now, it seems as if the trend is dying off. I'm not sure if dying is the right word. Cementing? Dissipating? Drifting away into a sea of gaming gimmicks to forever be forgotten?
It hard to enjoy the 3D when the game looks and runs terrible but when it works it definitely adds a lot to the immersion imo.
That said, I still think it's overpriced (I bought my 3D setup at great prices though).
I also have headaches without 60fps in 3D (120 real). And I hate the blurriness sub-HD 3D.
The only downside to 3D is the lack of support by some developers.
That said, there's a lot of great 3D games:
Batman 1 & 2, The witcher 2, Battlefield, Skyrim (modded), Crysis, Portal are among the very best I've played. Of course there are many more, but I haven't seen them myself.
But right now it's no longer news worth. Maybe a note on game preview/review, but not news on it's own. Don't mean it's dying.
If not talking about a tech means it's dead, I guess that analog stick support and polygonal graphics died with the PS1, after which those became standard and no one talked about anymore.
No one wants to pay $100+ dollars for glasses that might end getting broken or lost.
glasses free 3D that you see on 3DS just ads depth with no pop out like you experience in theaters or with passive home big screens.
Of course it's going to be weak, I mean, It's a portable device that isn't going to be far from your face, it has to be a bit weak.
Though second time round it did not take away from me enjoying the movie again i much prefered the 3D experence and for me its in many cases the same with games.
the reason 3D wont take off is because for a game to be in 3D they have to significantly reduce the graphics. if it can be made to look good in 3D, it would look twice as good without 3D.
take a look at these comparison pics of Uncharted 3 in 2D and 3D:

the 3D has the image quality and texture resolution of a bad PS2 game.
3D is and always has been a gimmick for video games. it keeps popping its head up again when manufacturers think they can make a quick buck, then it goes away again when people realise its not worth it.
for movies, well after seeing prometheus in 3D, im a huge fan. that is how 3D should be done, looked absolutely incredible.
