Of course she's going to need to defend herself - there's no shortage of man-children and internet trolls out there, hating childishly on anyone who isn't just like them - with barely any teeth, mustard stains on their wife beater t-shirt, and a 3rd grade reading and writing ability. That's just the games industry, and it will forever continue to be that way.
Don't waste your time reading internet criticism if you're a public figure. Especially when you're just a PRESENTER.
It's like all of those stinkin' singers that cry about "haters" in their songs all the time. "Why would they come to our concert just to boo us?" ....seriously, how are you getting exposed to "haters"?
Ignore it; the "affair" ends within a week. Agitate it; the stink spreads. She could have let it go, but she retaliated with immature comments.
She should have a cigarette and go play another guest role or D-movie character. Maybe that'll calm her down. That would match her self-righteous attitude more than retaliating and calling people "dicks" and "trolls" like the classy person she is(n't).
I thought freedom of speech can go as far as saying bomb at the airport I thought saying anything to start an confrontation was wrong... if we don't understand by now this country is over due for another civil war.
If you wanna hide behind the computer and constantly insult another gender or race you desarve a kick in the @ss... and if you dont understand just leave it alone, or ask questions to better understand that person.
Yeah, I love her; she nailed about what the majority of female and minority gamers have to go through even if they don't have a mic on or are friendly, or are leading their squad in kills.
I hear it, I see it, and it's not representative of all gamers, it certainly gives gamers a bad reputation. If it doesn't represent you, when you see stuff like that, instantly vote to kick. You may not be able to stop them, but you sure a heck can make a game a game, not a platform for hate.
It's idiots like those who drown out the actual constructive criticism she should be taking to heart.
Some day there really will be a competent E3 presenter, and she could be that person if she figures out the difference between not being politically correct (a construct of the 90's and Tipper Gore which hardly matters anymore) and being sensitive (with her "we're all a little gay" comment, she just stereotyped a little over half of the humans on this planet. It was awkward!).
What was wrong with her presentation? So what if she was being goofy, she was having fun. Seeing games that she loves, entertaining the people that provide her the favorite past time she has. I for one think it's great, and all you children who can't get over it need to just stop.
I felt Ubisofts presentation was a little awkward, but it had more to do with Toby than Aisha. I certainly preferred her to a bunch of old ugly dudes with empty, scripted and choppy sentences.
She tried to be funny, and that is more than I can say for a lot of the presenters.
There was nothing wrong with her presentation. As comedienne I've never really found her funny, but at the conference she was really funny I got some good laughs out of that.
The Toby Turner was the one who deserved some criticism. He was awkward and stupid. I know it was his shtick, but it was weird and he kept interrupting her. I hope she comes back next year because she was great. Leave Toby out though unless he can come off less awkward.
I got girl wood from this and when I saw Rayman I was like "WTF IS THIS SHIT!? I DON"T GET THIS!" too.
She was awkward and said some pretty forced sounding BAD lines. I think she just had the terrible job of following Mr Caffeine so she was bound to get nit picked.
She wasn't awful, but it was only her and Don Mattrick that made me place my face in my palm.
I'm not offended by her post. I dislike her attitude towards the situation.
Although it seems most are creaming over an actress that plays video games and swears a lot.
@Nimblest that's not what's wrote.
She states she doesn't do it for the fame. Then talks about being the host of this and the host of that, and then simply brags "i have plenty of money" "have you done this? have you hosted that?"..
She also starts the post 'Gamers,' not 'Trolls,' or 'Haters,'.
My point is addressing trolls or not, it's the wrong way to do it. Although i'd say this i haters not trolls, either way. They're out there you either ignore them or a simple 'fuck off' would have done.
The rant suggests it got to her and she wanted to boast about how she plays games and is rich.
lol... the last part of her rant, must a struck a nerve with someone.
I do agree with you that she should have just ignored it and moved on. It makes you look petty. Besides, the douche bags of the internet won't even know or care about it. They got their victory by getting to her!
You know whats annoying about neogaf, everyone calls me Gaf in "real" life and whenever anyone refers to neogaf by using GAF is really a pain for me, because its never a good comment, and i always have to do a double take.
I don't see anything wrong with what she said. She's right. There's too many keyboard capers on the internet, and she just put all of them on blast. Good for her.
WTF, I loved this speech. It kinda reminded me of Kevin Butler at last years E3 but waaaaay better since it was a response to douche bags and has real-life gamer scenarios. How could anyone not like this?
Well she's gotta keep her career alive somehow Poser is a new fast rising profession, like Kim Kardashian, she poses as a person with actual talent. Nikki Minaj, poses as Lady Gaga, and lady Gaga poses as an Egg.
I guess if Kickboxing was popular she'd of been a kickboxer before she could read, a kickboxer before bloodsport, a kickboxer before kickboxer, a kickboxer before Jean Claude Van damme!!
You must be new to Aisha Tyler. Her career is fine. She has one of the top rated podcasts on iTunes, currently is the voice of Lana in FX's Archer, and voice acted in Halo: Reach and Gears of War 3. She's been popular longer than you can remember.
@VideogameJimmy What does that have to do with keeping her career alive? Kim Kardashian is one of the most well know people in the world, yet she still dates people just to grab attention, because she's a fame & attention wh2re. If she does it, then definitely some voice over chick would do it, what's the difference?
@telekeneticmantis...your assessment of Alicia vs. Kim Kardashian is way off simply because of one thing....Alicia actually has WORKED to achieve a career...Kim just boned and ass flaunted her way to the top! HUGE difference!
I understand what your point is. Apparently, I'm the only one. You're going to have to dumb it down I think.
But, do you think she just could have just reacted badly to the situation and it got away from her?
Popularity and fame is not going to come easily through the gaming community. I feel it's just a poor reaction. Think of the examples you listed. Those were well thought out and engineered manipulations of media to get fame. This isn't
There are plenty of people here that dont care about petty consoles wars onn4g. Just look and youll see them. But hey they arent always in the hot stories like this one
She is hot as a brading iron! So I am offended that they offended her. Basterds!
@sly-Famous: You think you are the only back person on the internet? How do you know the person you are responding to is not also black. You said she is playing the "race card", the defend that statement by announcing you are black. Who gives a rat's behind what color you are? You are not in charge of who anyone else should feel about a comment made towards them. Some people are so dumb they don't even know when they are being insulted. I am not saying you are one of those people... but that might just be the case.
I think she definitely is justified in defending herself. Far worse has been undeservedly said of her. GAF is home to some downright vicious, miserable people. I used to have an account there, but I couldn't stand it anymore. Some of those characters are never happy with anything. It seems like half of the people there are enraged autistic kids. They see the slightest flaw in anything and they attack mercilessly.
Also, the racial attacks are inexcusable. She has every right to speak against those degenerates.
As for what she said about money, I do not agree that she said that to brag about her wealth. She was making a point that she didn't participate in E3 just for money. There are plenty of models and actresses who feign interest in games for financial gain, but I don't think Aisha Tyler is one of them.
Age well?? Since when does 40 mean you should have wrinkles, and sport a cane?? There are a bunch of people that are in their 40's that look better than a lot of people in their 20's...it's all about taking care of yourself.
I don't think lowering herself to the level of online trolls by acknowledging them is a good thing...at least not at her level. She has so much success as an actress, comedian, and gaming personality, so I don't understand why she would even give these people the time of day.
Aisha Tyler didn't need to spill her guts out on the Internet for me to know that online racists and trolls exist. Evidence of that has been on Youtube for years.
She didn't do it for you, she did it for the one that angered her.
What you claim she should of have be done is based on what you would have done if in her position. But you are not her, not a female in a male dominated hobby or a world where males look to women as lesser beings.
Besides not all people are robots. Even in same status people do not act the same. If she did act the way you wanted her to do, then she wouldn't be being herself.
In a case like this people will not stop, as they cannot be directly involved. Therefore they will remain. If I can think of any way possible for them to be ignored completely then she must reduce her hobbies to hiding by limiting or removing involvement in anything online; how else can she avoid these people entirely?
You must have missed the point...she did it because she is a gamer! She has a passion that goes beyond all of the other things that she happens to do. It was personal, at least to her, which meant that it was time to fight back with words. She didn't expect for all of the trolls and racists to just stop all of a sudden. She simply just had something to get off of her chest...thus the rant.
If you can't handle the trolls, you're in the wrong industry. Not to say I condone the trolling but they are what they are, trying to fight them is just a lost cause and a battle you won't win.
EXACTLY. Thats why I love the "Ignore" button on this site and the ability to block PMs. In life, your always going to encounter crazy people, the best thing to do is either ignore them or laugh at them...then move on.
Ignore/Block buttons should be universal. It would accomplish a lot in making the internet and gaming better.
There is a lot more we can do to curb the behaviour of internet assholes than we actually practice. The unfortunate reality is that the most power lies in the hands of bigger assholes who actually profit from these kind of socially inept gutter trash. They amount to a lot of Xbox Live memberships, just as a for instance.
If someone at the top grew a pair, they could curb this within a couple years.
If you can't play nice, then gtfo the playground. Here's your money back. Your console/Processor, your name, email, IP and billing address are now permanently banned. No second chances. No appeals. Good day sir.
Websites can be even more iron-fisted in their approach because they have nothing to lose. Banning trolls on websites doesn't stop them from reading your content. On the contrary, they're hopelessly impulsive and completely unable to curb their own behaviour. They just won't be able to interact in any way.
All that's required is the communal will and this problem could be dealt with. But for too many, the cost outweighs the benefits.
It should be more than that though. Ignoring the problem doesn't solve the problem. I brought up the issue of "toxic disinhibition" that seeps into gaming sites and pollutes online games. Ignore is great, but I think a "Kick" mechanism is always better. If there were some sort of social repercussions attached to anti-social behaviours we would could see this impact the problem, but there just aren't. The anonymity the net affords is the problem. It brings out the worst in some.
@darkride- Here's the problem. Although fanboys/trolls exist on this site, just like most gaming sites...they won't get kicked. Why? HITS
If you have a site thats built on flamewars, your not going to ban the flame starters, no matter how insecure, irrational, or flat out immature they are.
Same thing with XBL/PSN. Racists are racist and bullies are bullies...but that doesn't mean that they don't have money. Everytime I'm in an online game, I wonder why there are people that play angry or are just plain nasty...as if losing meant that other players were going to take food straight out of their kid's mouth. The truth is, these people make up a huge chunk of paying online gamers these days, so as crazy as they are, their dollars keep the online gaming scene afloat.
@LOGICWINS Actually, there are owners of websites that don't take this stance of yours. Users DO get kicked regardless of what they're trying to achieve. [You said they don't get kicked to increase hits.]
I own one of the fastest Call of Duty forums on the net, and I kick out trolls faster than they can start another troll. I don't care about hits, I care more about friendly community, quality posts, and better user experience.
Not a lot of call of duty forums have this mindset. And that's not really a good thing because you're actually feeding the trolls as the owner of that site. This is why neoGAF is so popular; the fact the owner doesn't really care about quality, or how these people treat others.
Of course because they can say whatever the hell they want from the safety of their computer but that's the only place they probably could talk that BS. People need to stop hiding from their comp man.
She's hardly pulling "the race card" when what she says is true. There are plenty of racist idiots online who throw around words like "nigger" as if it is going out of fashion. And its sad that so many people ignore such behavior by saying black people are just pulling "the race card" whenever they call someone out on it!
Oh please, I am a man of colour and even I know its something that is being over used and being used as a convenience, what I dont appreciate though is your use of the "N" word you could have just said "the N word" and we all would have known what you are talking about but you had to spell it out didnt you.
Their's too much people who say racist things online and no matter what you do, you can't stop them so Aisha should just ignore them. They wan't her reaction.
You said she was pulling the "race card" when she calls out people for being racist online.....and yet you tell me not to write the word "nigger" (even though I put it in quotation marks to emphasise the fact that people don't just say "the N Word" online. They go all-out and say "nigger") because it upsets you? THIS IS EXACTLY THE SORT OF THING AISHA TYLER IS TALKING ABOUT! You're agreeing with her! Yet I doubt you think you are pulling the "race card" here huh?
I never said that there aren't people who pulled the race card. But saying Aisha is pulling the race card even though she is 100% correct in what she is saying doesn't do anything to help put a stop to racist behavior. It's basically a way of saying "your opinion doesn't matter. You're just a black person who is using your race to win a fight" when that obviously isn't what she is trying to do.
Sly I'm black too. But it's over used when it isn't true and people are just using it to excuse their inability to do something. In this case, it's not a card. It's a fact.
And when it comes the the word nigger. No one can make you something by saying it. I'm not a nigger, so the word doesn't bother me. If you weighed 140lbs at 6 feet tall would it bother you if they called you fat. Don't let idiots make decisions for you. Like with finger pointing, one pointing at me and three at you. The person calling someone a nigger is the nigger.
@dcbronco...I too am black and I agree with what you said about this NOT being a race card issue. The race card is supposed to be an excuse. What excuse was used here? She WAS called all sorts of hateful things. As for the use of the "N" word...well I agree and disagree. Nobody can make you anything, but they can make you feel like it. I don't think that any person hears the word and agrees that they are indeed an "N" word. However, historically it has been shown over and over again that you can be treated in a unfair and sub-par way (as if you truly ARE less worthy than your counterpart)and thus be made to FEEL worse. I understand the chin-up, be stronger mentality. But, I also fully understand the frustration that comes with having to deal with racism. I won't take anybodies right away to feel whatever they actually feel when the word flies so freely.
You would never say "the N word" to a black man or woman in real life, but you do it online. I'm not addressing you @Tameel1. I am agreeing with you here. What I said is a general statement.
People throw the word out like it's okay.
As for you, @sly-Famous, there are two ways to say "the N word." Replace the "er" with "a" at the end. But the one with the "a" at the end is more universally accepted than the one with the "er." Because of what "a" was supposed to be designed for.
I never took offense to people using racial slurs online. I look at it like this: They can't touch me and I can't touch them the only thing they can do is insult me and be racist. It's kind of a sticks and stones may break my bones but words can't hurt me thing, but it works for me :)
I agree, it was all pretty cringe-worthy. How anyone can think she was a good hostess let alone the best E3 has ever seen is beyond me. Feel like im taking crazy pills.
Yeah shes hot and im sure shes a nice woman but she completely failed at e3.
Never ever feed into internet trolls. I know she wants to prove she is a gamer so she will feel accepted, but she could have gone about it another way.
Lol seriously I didnt have an problem with her.Im biggest problem was that annoying dude that they had.But for some reason now dude rather hate on an woman then trying go get with one how the world have change.
I say right on Aisha! She's obviously been gaming for a while and has encountered one too many internet/XBL/PSN flaming trolls. Sometimes I want to post similar comments on N4G ;)
- gamespot boards- bunch of no life virgins trolling 24/7. - gaf- bunch of smartasses who believes ey know everything about anything with few exceptions who actuylly do. Escpecially when some groups starts writing half page paragraphs why mgs4 is worst game ever. And why gaming 20 years ago was so much better than today. Lets not forget jrpg emos in whose eyes everything else is dude bro shooter that only people with 25 iq play. U get banned for most idiotic reasons known to mankind. All famous never duplicated pick up topics ala who has more cash(check no1 cares what u bought strange man on internet)etc. Sony and MS are evil and nothing touches nintendo games even though 95% of them have few wii games and most of time ey play on hd consoles or pc.
I post on GAF sometimes and you're right about the arrogance. But I think the average user there is older than at a site like here or ign, thats why they have a broader perspective of gaming and more appreciation for older companies like Nintendo, Sega, and Atari.
There are plenty of differing opinions and Nintendo-haters or JRPG-haters (right here).
It's a shame when someone's passion for gaming can't be taken at face value. I have to admit when I saw her presenting I was very sceptical that she was actually into gaming. I'm just used to seeing good looking women being used as tools for marketing.
Was it ghost recon that used a porn star in camo borat gear to sell their product? Ubisoft? It's not surprising a lot of people would question Ubi for hiring an attractive female to pretend to like games...again!
Anytime a good looking woman says she's into gaming I am filled with doubt thanks to the shady marketing strategies of businesses. Similarly with football and other male dominated areas. When I see Georgie Thompson on Sky Sports news I think she got her job because she's incredibly fit, not because she is into sport and knows a lot about it. Partly my fault due to my experience with the girls I grew up with (they were not into gaming or sport particularly) and partly due to the fact that my society puts so much emphasis on how you present yourself and not how good you are at something.
Tbh it might not be anything to do with sex (m/f); I think if it was an attractive male celeb presenting at E3 I would question his passion for gaming. Like Usher, he could be seriously into gaming, but if he said it at the MS conference I wouldn't believe him. It's like when they trotted out those counter strike champions and they were all pretty good looking. I just always have that niggling thought in the back of my head there will be better players than these guys who aren't as good looking.
Anyway, good on Aisha for saying this. Was funny and helped me better understand how much she enjoys gaming. She was a brilliant presenter too.
Humans are not emotionless, also we do not know what it is like being a women receiving sexists remarks; also you don't have to be a woman to react like this.
If you have learnt to ignore them then congratulations. Look at this way, if she has been gaming for so long, possibly longer than yourself, and she never ranted like she did now then it may be safe to say that she already knew about ignoring these people.
Her words are fulled of emotion, but it also has truth; her truth. And these people can not take that away from her, no matter what they say. She just vented once, for all we know, and well now maybe she can ignore them again for many years.
I'm not sure if it is about giving awareness, I think it is for the self.
People do not vent their anger for others, they do it for them self.
Still no matter what is said people will always do what they think is right. Know that what you think is the best way about dealing with the issue is not the way others might see it as such.
The losers online who anonymously post insensitive remarks obviously hate their own pathetic lives and tiny penises and are jealous because others who are different from them do not suffer the same affliction. They will die alone. And no one will miss them. Feel sorry for them, they don't have the brains or the balls to know any better.
The problem wasn't her, she was trying to make light of what was WRITTEN for her. She's actually a good host if you remember her hosting Talk Soup (now The Soup) on E!... If it was some dumb gaming exec instead of her they would most likely read everything that was written and be bored with it. Aisha was genuinely excited about the games shown. Not only that but she is one of the few celebrity gamers that would host an event and hardly get payed for it. She currently co-hosts the female talk show on cbs The Talk... And no she isn't single, she's married...don't know about the zen Archer table but i know they're about to release another Marvel pack sometime this summer.
What's there to get? People get trolled every day, doesn't mean it should be reported on a News site whenever it happens. I guess your right though, I see this and all I can think of is TMZ: Video Game Edition.
EDIT - OK, fair enough. She's got a right to defend herself against internet idiots.
None of those internet haters are above the return criticism she gave..especially on Gaf
Evil

Even when Whitney Houston died some of the comment were disgusting.

She's cool and gaming is cool but she says it's not about the fame, then brags about how much money she has.
She also says she games on all platforms 'motherfucker' then talks about gamertags, xbl and posts a gears based picture.
Oh well.
I have plenty of money.
She is adressing the fact that the gaf trolls and the rest kept saying she only did it for the money
She really loves games, and the internet can go shove a foot in its "ass"
People feel so safe insulting another human being because they are anon....
I hate crap like this

I own one of the fastest Call of Duty forums on the net, and I kick out trolls faster than they can start another troll. I don't care about hits, I care more about friendly community, quality posts, and better user experience.
Not a lot of call of duty forums have this mindset. And that's not really a good thing because you're actually feeding the trolls as the owner of that site. This is why neoGAF is so popular; the fact the owner doesn't really care about quality, or how these people treat others.
I understand the chin-up, be stronger mentality. But, I also fully understand the frustration that comes with having to deal with racism. I won't take anybodies right away to feel whatever they actually feel when the word flies so freely.
People throw the word out like it's okay.
As for you, @sly-Famous, there are two ways to say "the N word." Replace the "er" with "a" at the end. But the one with the "a" at the end is more universally accepted than the one with the "er." Because of what "a" was supposed to be designed for.
The fact that people can type up any hatred filled thing without repercussions is making the internet overflow with these a-holes..

Yeah shes hot and im sure shes a nice woman but she completely failed at e3.
Motherfucker, ALL of them."
Brapp! Lol
Someone give Aisha a bubble!
Oh and Nier is best game eva!!!!!!!!

There are plenty of differing opinions and Nintendo-haters or JRPG-haters (right here).
People do not vent their anger for others, they do it for them self.
Still no matter what is said people will always do what they think is right. Know that what you think is the best way about dealing with the issue is not the way others might see it as such.
That is all.
But after reading that, I really like her.
2) Excellent post.
3) More Archer please!
4) Is that Zen Pinball table based on Archer still in the works?
If it was some dumb gaming exec instead of her they would most likely read everything that was written and be bored with it. Aisha was genuinely excited about the games shown.
Not only that but she is one of the few celebrity gamers that would host an event and hardly get payed for it. She currently co-hosts the female talk show on cbs The Talk... And no she isn't single, she's married...don't know about the zen Archer table but i know they're about to release another Marvel pack sometime this summer.
