MGS: HD Collection - "False" Advertising?

We have three major gripes with Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection for the PS Vita, which is due for release on June 29th in the EU. (Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, PS Vita, Retro)

Nitrowolf2  +   371d ago
well yeah, I mean with the small screen of the Vita it's gonna look great. There's more than just resolution changes to as coloring, and more details have been added compared to the SD versions I think.
guitarded77  +   371d ago
I only have the console version, and the cut-scenes have even been remastered unlike some HD remakes. I don't know if it's the same for the Vita... pretty sure it would be. My only gripe with the Vita version is no Peace Walker... WTF???
Nitrowolf2  +   371d ago
yeah me to. I'm wondering if it's cause they want people to buy the PSP version, or if it just didn't have enough room on the cartridge to support it.
LiViNgLeGaCY  +   371d ago
That's my one gripe as well! Not sure what their reasoning is. :\
xursz  +   371d ago
I'm dying to play Peace Walker but I'm holding out in hopes of an HD Edition on Vita. Probably not very likely at this point. :/
Ocelot525  +   371d ago
"the cut-scenes have even been remastered "

duh, the cutscenes are rendered in realtime,...

You should have bought it all ready when it came out on the PSP. I have it on my Vita and it's working properly with the two sticks.

Besides it's cheaper than the console version by $10 when it released.
Knushwood Butt  +   371d ago
We get Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 though..
kingdavid  +   371d ago
You wouldnt even be able to tell the difference if it was running 960 x 544 or 720p or 1080p because the screen is so small.

Some people still havent figured this out.
hay  +   370d ago
It's Vita's port of HD Collection. I don't think it validates product's name change. System alone won't benefit at all from higher resolution due to physical size of the screen.
PJF_Josh  +   367d ago
They had to leave out Peace Walker due to size limitations in the Game Cards, If this was a digital only release they could have theoretically put it in there.

Since it has a physical release as well, they had to make a choice and Peace Walker got cut.
Blastoise  +   371d ago
The guy said its not a collection, its a pair. But the silent hill "collection" was a pair...
BubloZX  +   371d ago
LOL what the hell does that make the GOW HD collection for PS3? Sure alot of collections come with 3 games but 3 doesn't make it a collection.

And HD isn't defined by resolution only. Audio and textures are a factor as well.

And as far as resolution is concerned anything above 480p is HD. 540p+ is HD as far as its concerned. And last time I checked the vita could run 720p and 1080p videos on its screen and and looks just as good as the Iphone and Ipad's screen. And compared to the orginal games it is much much better then before.
dennett316  +   371d ago
Actually BubloZX, HD is a standard, and the minimum standard is 720p (1,280×720 pixels) while Full HD is obviously 1080p (1,920×1,080 pixels).
480p and 540p are simply progressive scanning formats, and well below the 576 lines visible in PAL SD broadcasts...they look sharper as it's progressive rather than interlaced, but it's still not HD.

The Vita's screen is 960 × 544 and is vibrant and bright due to being OLED, but it is NOT HD resolution. The games will still look great, and it's a nice res for such a small screen, but it ain't HD.
Ocelot525  +   371d ago
BS

i have both the original and the hd versions of mgs1,2 and peace walker.

They only increased the resolution for mgs2 and mgs3 , nothing else changed.

For peace walker they increased resolution, added rumble and added right stick support. That's it.

And trophies?
Darth_Bane79  +   371d ago
The difference in Hd levels, like 720 and 1080, depends also on the size of the screen. For example, a 30" tv with 720 would look HD level, and if you put the same size tv, but on 1080, your eyes will most likely never see the difference. Now if you do the same thing on any TV 45" and up, the difference would be super obvious. Now on the PSV screen it is the same thing, so for that size screen the game is on HD, and probably looks sharper than the original game looked on a big screen
ReadyBodyReggie  +   371d ago
The fact that this is called "collection" and only includes 2 games is what's false advertising. Not cool, better off getting MGS3D for the Nintendo 3DS handheld.
Body status: Snake Eaten.
MariaHelFutura  +   370d ago
How is 2 games not a collection?

The Team Ico Collection is one of the best discs ever made.
Snookies12  +   371d ago
Uh, how can the Vita support a resolution much higher than its own screen? Besides, on a smaller screen like a handheld, the games look really freaking nice. I've been playing MGS2 for a little bit now, and it looks perfect. We've also known for a while now that Peace Walker wasn't included.

Anyway, the only problem I have so far with the game, is that it's a little hard to do pull-ups with the back touch panel... Having to move both fingers up the sides, it doesn't always work. Not that it really matters since you don't NEED to do pull-ups unless you want a lvl. 3 grip.
yewles1  +   371d ago
It is indeed possible to see resolution difference even on low resolution screens. As a beginner's test, find a 1080p YT vid and try to compare both that version to a 720p version on a SD display. The lousy compression of YT vids should be the easiest way for anyone to see the differences AND learn about the effects of overscan.
ItemGet  +   371d ago
Exactly, its going to look lush on the PS Vita but its not HD, so don't call it HD! Call it MGS: Lush Pair or MGS: Vita Collection. It's not HD, ergo don't call it HD! Simples. Yes Peace Walker hasn't been included for a while now, but the name is still the same as its PS3 counterpart. Maybe I am being too pedantic.

svoulis  +   371d ago
Vita has "qHD" which means quarter HD. Why is that acceptable in terms of HD graphics? Honestly? BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE ON SUCH A SMALL SCREEN.

SO is it HD to an extent no. But since you admitted to being pedantic. I'll say this.

The textures and resolution are a HIGHER definition than the game originally released upon. Thus making it Higher Definition than the original version of the game.

@Yewles1

You just kind of put your foot in your mouth by saying "The lousy compression of YT vids should be the easiest way for anyone to see the differences"

"The lousy compression"
"lousy compression"
"Compression"

Take an actual BR rip of a movie and put them on the Vita and really notice the difference. IF YOU DO its a placebo effect and your just being ignorant to the fact that it wouldn't really have an effect.

http://www.myce.com/news/be...

There are plenty of articles proving what I said go google it.

So as far as MGS HD collection. It is still HD, in terms of what they did with the games themselves. Higher Res textures in general will help prove that.

EDIT:

Vita Resoultion : 960*544 QHD
Standard Resolution: 640 × 480 SD

Still not SD.

I think if you drop from one ledge and grab onto a lower one it counts as 10 pull ups and you won't have to use the back pad. A good place to do it in the Tanker is the stairs on the left right at the start (maybe iirc).

Here's a vid of the trick in the Plant chapter.

that game needs a lot more than the ability to play in hd
StayStatic  +   371d ago
How about "MGS: Vita Collection" instead and their should be a download code for Peace Walker imo , think ill stick with the PS3 version.

Seems stupid if you own the PS3 version you can't get a vita port for free , same dam game.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Kojima talked about how great transfarring would be, but...having to rebuy the game once you bought the PS3 version is stupid. They should have given it for free. I guess transfarring is doomed.
darren_poolies  +   371d ago
The Silent Hill Collection only contained two games. Just because there are only two doesn't mean it can't be a collection. Just saying.
dennett316  +   371d ago
Just because Konami called that abortion a collection doesn't mean they're right.
The Resident Evil collection they're releasing for the PS3 is a genuine collection as it includes Resi 5&6 and download codes for Resident Evil 1-4....THAT'S a collection, Silent Hill, God of War and this are pairs. Don't let BS marketing change the basic meaning of words. If there were only 2 games in a series, you could call a pair a collection, but in all cases so far, that's not the case.

I don't get why people have such a hard time understanding that the Vita, 3DS, and hell, even the original PSP were are all HD displays.

Total resoultion ain't the thing to go by. Pixel density is what ya' need to look at, and in those terms the Vita blows every other gaming device out of the water.
ItemGet  +   371d ago
DPI is very important, I agree.
Ocelot525  +   371d ago
HD = 1280 x 720

DPI ain't got nothing to do with that

jek7  +   371d ago
@ocelot525

1280x720 is HD for big screens and consoles it is never the case for handhelds. Xof is right the dpi in the 5inch screen with 960x544 resolution is a lot higher than the ones in consoles
CaptCalvin  +   371d ago
"High Definition" = High clarity in general. It can refer to the clarity of anything from audio to texture. If a game were to run in the Vita screen's native resolution, you can bet your a$$ it's clear.
jek7  +   371d ago
based on your first argument. the resolution of the vita is 960x544. that resolution would look like HD because of the vita screen size. of course it won't be HD if it is shown on a large screen tv. but that is not the case. so i find that case invalid. i agree with the second argument nonetheless.
kB0  +   371d ago
How did this make it on N4G? This is just knit picking at it'
s best!

Definition of Collection :The action or process of collecting someone or something.

This is no set number. A pair, triple, etc...There are 2 Sherlock Holmes movies, so thats MY COLLECTION.

The omission of Peace Walker is a bummer, but since it's not written on the box as included, then you should know what your getting for 40$.

You don't like it, don't buy...don't bitch!

the PS Vita is 960x544, so really the HD comment is a no go, and compared to 640x480 that the game prob ran at, I'm grateful for even this much. The HD states that it is def a higher resolution. The statement HD has been loose since the release of the PS3 and 360.

Also cars are being named HD, so this is the new "cool" word that has multiple meanings.

As for the lateness of the game's presense, there is market to take into consideration (you don't re-re-re-release this after you just released the much better deal ps3/360 versions) and also cost of porting, time of porting and then localizing it.

I'm grateful to have it unlike others:)

Now I'm starving, so I'm going to go bitch about the food I really want.

Later!
dennett316  +   371d ago
By your own given example you have proved yourself wrong. You can call the Sherlock Holmes movies a collection in a set BECAUSE there are only two of them.

There are far more Silent Hill games than appeared in that "collection", same with this, same with God of War...a Silent Hill collection should include all the games at a higher price, gamers would pay it for a full collection they could play on current hardware. It should certainly include all the mainline games if not the PSP spin-ofs or reboots.

You and other apologists are allowing companies to get away with producing the bare minimum of effort and hiding it behind marketing guff. Why would you be grateful to have it? They are selling it to you, it's a product, they haven't made it out of the goodness of their hearts. You will end up paying more for a lesser product than the home console versions....why would anyone applaud this or be grateful for it?

It's cheap shovelware for the company, it doesn't cost them much at all...any and all localisation has already been done on the console versions.

When that company has a gun to your head and forces you to buy em, I will agree with u.

But I'm sorry I prefer not to play my games in 480p.

I like playing my games at native resolution, so yeah I'm willing to pay for it!

The point of cost isn't important, it's none of my concern how much a company pays to transfer these games if it plays well.

I'm sorry but if I were in their position I'd cash in too.

Why not get some money if ppl STIL WANT TO BUY MY GAME. I bet they wouldn't even have to do an HD update and ppl would still buy them.

Be grateful that they enhanced the resolution and move on.

Also your speaking on behalf of ppl that have played the game, how bout ppl that haven't played em?

yeah:)

Bye bye!

The false sense of entitlement with consumers these days is ridiculous.
Allowen  +   371d ago
Well, if the Peace Walker(PSP game) could at least work on the Vita it would be great enough to me.

I got like 75% of my PSP games bought from the PSN store and only around 10% of my digital library games I got works on my Vita.

the PSVita is an incredible machine but it still needs a lot support.
Hopefully that Psone support will make ALL of those classic games to work automatically on the Vita.

if you have access to a ps3, you can import it that way. if not, then just wait.
CaptCalvin  +   371d ago
It's just a title. They're not going to call it Metal Gear Solid qHD Collection. "High Definition" doesn't just apply to resolution you know. It applies to clarity in general, meaning audio, textures, etc. Plus they did make it clear what resolution the game would be running in on the back of the box.

720p is the most common hd but vita is 544p which 'IS' hd. 480p is also hd it doesn't have to be 720p or 1080p. Those two are the most advertised and maketed
Smokingunz  +   371d ago
The vita is qhd (quarter hd) I think even the made the vita run in 720p or 1080p the difference would only be slight just because of the size of the screen alone. I think Sony new this or they were just being cheap and made it 544p
DigitalAnalog  +   371d ago
Question is, does it share the same pixel density.
If so, viewing it on a small screen would retain the exact same "HD-ness" on a 32" screen if natively run at 720p.

Just saying.

Hd. On portable systems is about pixel density, and not Only numbers my noobfriend, Vita has a screen with pixel density high as the iPad 3

So, it's correct call of HD.

Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2

i don't think it is false advertising.

720p or 1080p is HD for TV's, I think on mobile platforms, HD is a different resolution.

I mean hasn't alot of mobile/cell phones been saying that they have HD screens for quite a while now?
JohnApocalypse  +   370d ago
On the US version it says 'Only on Playstation' even tough it isn't. There's more false advertising for ya

CaptCalvin  +   369d ago
It's not like you can stick the gamecard into any other platform and play it. So in that sense, the product is "Only on Playstation."

Plus, it's not even a sentence, so no argument can be made on what the statement actually refers to.

If it's of any comfort; the Vitas screen is in qHD. That's quarter High Definition. The game is certainly in higher definition than the original. These complaints are daft..
