Why ? I don't understand , unless your current one breaks down seems like a waste of money just to own a slimmer version.

Also makes me wonder what they would have to strip out as they removed ps2 compatibility last time :(
ilikestuff  +   1175d ago
agreed, and the original ps3 was a beauty, the slim is ugly as shit to me (i hide mine behind the tv) makes me wonder if they could make the anorexic ps3 even uglier
Dno  +   1175d ago
1st off, ps2 was already removed when the slim came out so nothing would be removed with the slimmer version.

Second people like new toys. i bet you got the 4-5 different versions of iphone or ipad which cost 3 times as much as this would. So let him breath and buy what he wants.
GamingPerson  +   1175d ago
f**k That! I want a super slim ps4 at launch.
PonyMadeFromTacos  +   1175d ago
Why not? Maybe he doesn't have a PS3? I certainly don't have one, I want one, because of all the games, and MAYBE I would buy one if a new and improved version came out.
Peppino7  +   1175d ago
I'd buy one if my current ps3 breaks. The original 60gb was sexy though.
shoddy  +   1175d ago
I want one for every of my 3 tv and both of my house.
No pun intended.
Disccordia  +   1175d ago
They can remove the power supply from the back for a start. Probably rebound as psthree like with previous consoles. If they can hit a good price then why not I say
jacksons98  +   1175d ago
I think you are thinking of 360. PS3 original or slim has never had a external power supply.
Jihaad_cpt  +   1175d ago
have you ever heard of Apple and their products people buy stuff like this...
fei-hung  +   1175d ago
Some people trade their old ones in for a newer model since the newer models usually are better built.

e.g. the newer PS3 models after the glossy fatty had a slightly faster HDD, better fan, less noisier and gace of less heat.

If a newer model is released, chances are it would have an external power supply (saving a lot of space). If the power supply is external, it will probably require less cooling, the chips will probably be smaller too and it may even come with wireless N and USB 3.

Either way, if they do release one, I will probably trade one of my PS3's for a PS3 Slim. I just hope it will be sexy like the old fatty and not cheap plasticy like the PS3's.
Oner  +   1175d ago
StayStatic said ~ "...I don't understand , unless your current one breaks down seems like a waste of money just to own a slimmer version."

At least when someone does it with a PS3 it's usually not to replace a broken one like a 360...plus what does it matter if he can own multiple consoles?

@ jacksons98 about Disccordia's comment ~ I think he was referencing how the PS1 & PS2 went to an external PSU later in their revision cycles...I think, and if it's not it's still a valid point and is a possibility. Though knowing Sony they would probably put right back in while making it even smaller once again (a la PS2).

Lazyeye79  +   1175d ago
Me too, I fear that my old 60gb might die on me soon, so a newer slimmer, and hopefully cheaper ps3 would be great.
gaffyh  +   1175d ago
You really should, my 60GB died on me when inFAMOUS 1/RE5 came out. Then got a replacement, which died on me when I was playing Skyrim. Luckily I managed to transfer the save.

But one thing I found out was that you cannot restore a PS3 Phat backup to a PS3 Slim (which I got a couple of months before my 2nd 6OGB failure). Because my 2nd 60GB was still working, I was able to do the console to console transfer with a network cable. In fact, that is the only way to do it. So you need to get a slim before your other one dies.

The day my 60 died on me :-(
Bad times! I so wish I could have it back! I do think the Slimline does compliment my room better than the fat and it seems to generate less heat (might be my imagination) and is quieter.

A new version would be brilliant and I would buy one if ever my Slimline decides to die.
miyamoto  +   1175d ago
there is a psychology to a smaller form factor like the PS2 Slim.

It makes any electronics unit look "affordable."
TheBigShamona  +   1175d ago

It your right to buy whatever you want but its just confuses me as to why you would buy this if you already have a functioning PS3.

aquamala  +   1175d ago
These consoles won't last forever, esp the hard drive. If you can find a good deal for a good new console and good trade in/sell value for the old one, definitely do it. I swapped out my 360/ps3 last black friday.
vickers500  +   1175d ago
I wouldn't.

I don't WANT a slimmer ps3, I want a ps3 that has better features.

How about 4 or 5 usb ports, with one in the back for the playstation eye so it doesn't have to annoyingly protrude out the front? How about bringing back memory card slots for SD. Or some of the other unncesseary but nice premium features that the original phat model had, like a chrome trim and lettering, a sexy black gloss material instead of the current ugly material, touch sensitive buttons like the original phat had.

We don't need a slimmer ps3. And oh yeah, how about some ps3s with different designs and colors? An inFAMOUS painted ps3 or something like that. I've only seen one or two ps3s like that, and one of them was only available in Japan (final fantasy).

A slimmer ps3 though? No thank you, unless it has some of the stuff I mentioned above. My ps3 slim I have is already light enough and thin enough as it is. Hell, I sometimes have to hold the damn thing down when putting a usb cord in the front because it moves so much from being so light.
SandwichHammock  +   1175d ago
I agree, except for the chrome and glossy part, I love flat black finishes, but that's more of a personal preference and I wouldn't call it a "feature" ;).

The back usb idea (especially for the pseye) is a stellar one.

The peculiar thing about redesigns (even if minor)is they always drop things in the interest of being on par with (most likely) a lower price. That is what happened to the 2000-3000 series cycle. The die thermals stayed the same but they cut the HDD and Network indicators on the front of the console. I recently had a hard time buying a 2000 series and ended up getting one from Shopper's Drugmart from all places and $40 cheaper than a 3000 series (same HDD size)from a place like EBGames. Yet it technically has more features.

PS3 has always been a great piece of electronics, but the rear USB ports have been something I've wanted since day one.

you don't have to buy everything sony makes and get a new console just because it's "slimmer" doesn't make any sense at all.

Yeah great idea. Lets focus on putting out another version of a 6 year old console instead of releasing our next gen console that people (me especially) are clamoring for.
stephmhishot  +   1175d ago
Yeah, because the two are completely related.

There were still new versions of the PS2 being released that were more streamlined inside, even with the PS3 out. We all know the PS3 will turn into Sony's casual box after the PS4 is released, and part of that process is making the PS3 as affordable as possible. Everyone was hoping for a PS3 price cut to $199, imagine if they slim it down and cut costs down to the point where they can get away selling it at $149 by the holiday season? Even if they don't make dime off the actual console, the flood of new customers buying software and accessories would more than make up for it.

Plus, I'd love to pick up a few PS3s and cut back on my cable services by getting rid of a few boxes and channels. A PS3 for every TV with Netflix and Hulu is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying $250 bucks a month to Verizon.

LNDCalling  +   1175d ago
Agreed and exactly my thoughts..

I think a new slim would be Sony's splash for this gen as the final slim PS2 was for the last gen. If circa $140 it would pick up the people who still have PS2's and whilst you might not believe it there are lots of them!
princejb134  +   1175d ago
lol I'm still waiting for the ps4 to get released that way theres a price drop on games, and i would purchase all those ps3 games i couldn't afford before
stephmhishot  +   1175d ago

I'd love to see them announce the new model and price at TGS, it would be poetic since that's where they did it the last time. TGS show is late September correct? Kaz, well I guess not Kaz anymore, announces the new model and 149-199 price point. The new model will come with a complimentary three month PS+ Membership, three months of Netflix for free, plus vouchers for free downloads of UC1 and UC2. Just in time for the holiday season.

Might this hurt Sony's already hurting bank accounts, probably, but in Sony's case, this type of investment would be worth it. Not even the most jaded members of gaming media would be able to spin that as a negative (outside of maybe "Sony is basically giving away the PS3 at $149, is this a sign they have given up on the system?" articles).

Edit: Plus, a new PS Move bundle that comes TWO wands, Sports Champions 2, Sorcery and Medival Moves for, $299. Plus the afformentioned freebies in the base bundle.
#6.1.3 (Edited 1175d ago ) | Agree(1) | Disagree(1) | Report
LNDCalling  +   1175d ago
@stephmhishot Well I believe its a distinct possibility and it could, in theory, counter any possible loss in sales from a next gen announcement, if it's priced right.

Bundle would be good but couldn't include too much so as to not make it bargin basement. Even if in reality the bundle is a steal, if its too much people just won't buy it.

It's going to be an interesting couple of years in gaming... :D
sayedstafa  +   1175d ago
The ps2 slim and the ps3 had nothing to do with each other. What's wrong with releasing a smaller, lower budget console for consumers who are late adapters? That's exactly what the ps2 slim was and I'm sure that's what this new ps3 model will be.
TheNocturnus  +   1175d ago
The world has had 6 years to get a PS3. I have gone through a few of them and I am not rich by any means. I don't give an F about late adopters. It is way passed time for next gen. It's not like after the PS4 is released that people cannot still go out and buy a PS3 slim. I guarantee you that the price of the PS3 slim will drop even more when the PS4 comes out. Eventually PS3's will be $99 NIB.
sayedstafa  +   1175d ago
You still don't understand, the current ps3 slim isn't going to go down to $99, that's what a new model would be for. A smaller, more cost efficient model. Don't care about late adapters? Fine, this model isn't for you, just like the $99 ps2 slim wasn't for people who wanted the ps3. Just like how the PSOne wasn't for people who wanted the PS2. Just like how the Sega Genesis Model 3 wasn't for people who wanted Saturn/PS/N64. You get the point? There's more than one target audience out there other than the people who want the new, there are people who want cheap and affordable.
ChronoJoe  +   1174d ago

My PS3 is on the brink of a breakdown because it refuses to play blu-rays. ¬_¬'

Hopefully it'll be with a cheap price-tag.
Hicken  +   1175d ago
thegamersfix.com will likely have what you need. $75 at most for the entire bluray drive. About 50 for the laser and deck. Free shipping, from what I recall. Just gotta know what type of laser/drive you need.
Persistantthug  +   1175d ago
MacDonagh, Yeah...you can repair that.....There are youtube tutorials on it
I changed the thermal paste in my Fat 80 Gig unit last year.

Which PS3 do you have MacDonagh? (Mine is a CECHL, for example)

LakerGamerEnthusiast  +   1175d ago
thats not his problem though, what your referring to is the red light error which makes your ps3 unplayable to the xmb. He simply has to replace his blu ray player or repair it with the things he needs.
Persistantthug  +   1175d ago
@erick21093.......I know my problem is not his problem.....those are 2 different issues.
What I'm saying is, is I did it myself.

The way PS3 is built, it's actually harder to get to the CPU and GPU vs getting to the BluRay player.

Also, btw....My issue wasn't a "light error". I just simply wanted to change the original cheap paste with a higher grade paste after 3 years. I used Arctic Silver 5, btw. My PS3 runs like the first day now :)

the current PS3 design is good enough. It's not too slim and nor too fat, it's perfect.

I hate PS2 slim because it was so slim and ugly.

PS3 slim > PS3 fat
PS2 fat > PS2 slim
abzdine  +   1175d ago
slimmer is not only for fun, it means less material which means cheaper.
DiRtY  +   1175d ago
Why would they redesign it so late into the generation?

I mean 12 months from now we will know most of the specs of the PS4 and Xbox 3 already. E3 2013 will be done this time next year.

If they can reduce costs with it: Why did they wait so long?!
abzdine  +   1175d ago
The last PS2 SKU with internal electric bloc was made after PS3 came out so why not now ?

well probably know the specs but it probably won't release till a year later
LNDCalling  +   1175d ago
@DiRty As mentioned above they did the same with the PS2.

You see, people know that Sony will continue to support their previous console as they have and are for the PS2 (which is still moving hardware). If they release a cheaper slimmer version now it would sell to people wanting a spare or additional console, those moving from PS2 (of which there are millions) and single console owners wanting to see what the PS3 has to offer!

All of the above will reduce any expected loss in sales which would ordinarily come from announcing a next gen console!

MS and to an extent Nintendo have limited this possibilty by their previous actions, something which is currently showing in Wii sales and would show in MS sales given what happend (or didn't happen) to the original Xbox once they released the 360!

A true fan boy does not care about games. He/she only cares about the console sales.

Ulf  +   1175d ago
Slimming the console reduces the price...
stephmhishot  +   1175d ago
Cooler, less power consumption, cheaper. Plus, new things, even ones that have been simply redesigned, always excite consumers. Plus, its about time they make these things available in different colors here in the US and this would be the perfect way to introduce them.
neutralgamer19  +   1175d ago
Rip my 80 gig phat which i loved because of all the little extra features!!!!!

But i would buy this slimmer one immediately just because ive been looking for an excuse to buy another one for my bedroom (i bought one after the phat died last year for my living room)

I bet if they came out with the super slim in a diff color say red that would sell like hotcakes!!!!!!
DigitalAnalog  +   1175d ago
With the PS3 being slimmer, it means that they have managed to find a way to make the chips smaller therefore less prone to overheating issues. They can also lower the power supply saving a lot of cost (rendering more profit). This way, they may bring back the memory card function that was featured on the 60gb phat. I'm all for smaller systems; they save energy and it's more compact.

This alone would buy Sony another 5 years for this gen. Let Nintendo and MS fail with their new consoles that the public does not want yet.

I love the idea of really small device playing massive games like uncharted. I don't know why but I think its such a cool idea. Like if they managed to make it as small as an apple tv box (or there abouts) that would be unreal but actually very unrealistic.

Still though, it was an engineering feet to slim the ps3 down to its size back in 2009 so I don't doubt them;)
