Epic senior technical artist Alan Willard talks Unreal Engine 4 for next-gen consoles

There's no PS4 or Xbox 720 behind the curtain, Alan Willard assures a dark room full of eager video game journalists. Nope, it's just a current high-end piece of PC hardware. In spite of the company's position as a creator of one of the industry's leading game engines, Epic doesn't get a peek at Sony and Microsoft's next generation consoles before the companies are ready for their grand unveiling. "We won't know final hardware specs until everyone else does," the company's senior technical artist tells me after the presentation, adding with a laugh, "If they do, I don't know anything about it."

Well their was that story that Microsoft shipped their next gen devkits around the beginning of this year so i wouldn't be surprised.

I am liking how UE4 is looking - it does not have that wet waxy plastic look like EU3 and the character model look more define and less bulky.

In terms of graphics no #+%# but what they showed was running on a high end pc. No console will see those graphics next gen. UE4 is much more realistic in terms of gaming.

How did you get disagrees? People are so naive.

Square E are Sony fanboys so you know what they showed off will be on the PS4.

I reckon the next gen Xbox and Playstation will get pretty close to this level of detail and quality. Maybe not straight away but there is some incredibly capable developers out there who will get some amazing results down the line. Look at some of the games on Xbox 360 and PS3 now, pretty amazing stuff.

I'm not a PC gamer but didn't Epic say they ran that demo on a not so powerful rig, single core or something. Which I think is why sqaure enix ownen them.

Anyway more than anything about next gen that I hope continues is in the animation department. It seems towards the end of this cycle developers have been upping the ante on world interaction, animation sets and such. I hope the trend goes up ten fold even as much as the graphics.
