E3 2012: “Next-Gen” Planetside 2 Powered By The GeForce GTX 670

geforce.com : To kick things off we visited Sony Online Entertainment’s booth to check out the eagerly anticipated Planetside 2, a free-to-play massively multiplayer online first-person shooter that sees over 1,000 players duke it out simultaneously for control of resource-generating bases. Creative Director Matt Higby gave us a quick rundown of the game and then dived straight into the tech, extolling the virtues of the game’s internally developed engine before detailing NVIDIA’s involvement with the project:

$399 is the minimum price for a GTX 670. Ouch.

NYC_Gamer4335d ago

That's cheap for the performance the 670 offers

Its an article from geforce.com of course they are going to plug the latest and greatest silicon coming out of Nvidia.

I'm sure Planetside 2 will run acceptably on mid range to high end 400 and 500 series cards with minor adjustments. The game wont play any worse if they don't have the real time cloud shadows box ticked.

Exactly, it's business and the devs are hardly going to use budget cards if they want to show it to the absolute best they can.

It's common practice to use the best hardware available to show off games, it doesn't mean it won't be playable on lesser hardware.

In a recent developer interview it was made known that the machines used for the trails of Planetside 2 at E3 were using high-end PC hardware. They also informed the viewers that they are doing all they can to allow for compatibility with a wide range of settings and hardware. I'm sure they will release more information as the Beta gets going and they can start to test a wide range of user builds.

Arma 3
Planetside 2
Crysis 3
Metro Last Light

--------- All are nVIDIA :Meant To Be Played titles, except Crysis 3 all use PhysX ...... AMD is up for a bumpy ride :S

beerkeg4335d ago (Edited 4335d ago )

I don't know, I've got a 6850 and I haven't run into any problems playing games that are on the Made to be Played with nVIDIA campaign or whatever it's called.

I have got my eye on a 570 though, either in the next few months or when prices fall through the floor. I might wait even longer and see what gets sold cheap in the January sales.

EDIT:@Orpheus

Yeah I remember when Doom 3 came out and I got a 6800gt to play it, I was gobsmacked at the time. Great card, but the same could be said for the 9800 pro that I got to play Far Cry lol.

Orpheus4335d ago

Meant to be played doesnt necessarily mean you are going to run into problems with AMD cards , it just means there is higher probability of it running better on a nVIDIA card which in turn means more sales for nVIDIA , remember Doom3 alone increased the sales of 6800 ULTRA .. Meant to be played campaign is at least one of the reasons you got your eyes on the 570 :P

They sold the entire company. I did like when they ran Everquest as well. But numbers were declining unfortunately
