'Resident Evil 6' seems to be going more towards action than horror

The Verge: In recent years, the Resident Evil franchise has evolved into something very different from where it originated. What was once a series about conserving ammo, low body counts and horrible voice acting has become a series about blasting away with machine guns, high action and, well, the voice acting is still pretty iffy. But it's the shift from survival horror to action that seems to have turned off some fans. Capcom seems focused on continuing the franchise's transformation, though, at least if the Resident Evil 6 is any indication. (PC, PS3, Resident Evil 6, Xbox 360)

Great article and I have to agree. Most of what was shown in the E3 demo in Microsoft's Press Conference was mainly based on action. It kind of makes me sad that Resident Evil is fading away it's horror genre.

i kinda of agree; but with RE4, capcom sort of painted themselves into a corner. they went towards action and let the story escalate. at this point, they really have no choice but to go over the top (while they're in the main series 1, 2, 3, 4...).

i think they could still do throw backs as side stories; but as far as the main story goes, i think our expectations need to change. we need to start judging the game based on the quality of the action, atmosphere and set pieces...not the scare factor.

Dead space 2 is full of action and it's still really scary, done right full blown action can be just as scary as the older games.

Dead Space 2 was okay, but Dead Space 1 has a better horror aspect IMO. It seems like EA is going the same route as Capcom. Isaac now has a cover system in Dead Space 3 and there's co-op, all unnecessary for a horror game coming from the roots of Dead Space 1.

Don't get me wrong, co-op is very fun for certain games (like Borderlands) but for a horror game it kind of doesn't belong there. The sense of being with someone else makes you feel more secure - if you get in trouble they'll easily rescue you. There's no feeling of desperation, isolation, loneliness or vulnerability that makes the horror aspect shine. It's no longer you vs the bad scary stuff out there!

Capcom just doesn't care. They're willing to sacrifice the heart and soul of what defined R.E games for a more block-buster action oriented theme IF more cash will roll in. This makes the game more accessible to a wider audience. It means that since it's more action oriented, they can remove some of the challenges, such as limited supply of ammo - equip the player with loads of it since they'll be moving around quite a lot. Take cover if you're just being careless so that you can surprise them predictable zombies that used to surprise YOU.

They (Capcom) think that giving a character more guns, ammo and moves makes the game okay as long as the zombies are still there. This reduces the horror aspect of the game, and makes it more of an action game. Sure, they get more sales from it, but it sure as hell won't resemble its forerunners that defined what the Resident Evil games are about.

No fucking shit. Doesn't take a genius to notice that. Doesn't mean it won't be scary, though.
Prcko  +   1341d ago
and that is the reason why i won't buy this piece of cr*p
they don't wanna make games what fans like, they making games like they want!

Gamecube release.
PS2 release
Wii release
PC release
Phone release

Silent Hill has become action, lol?

Have you actually played Downpour? it's the only TRUE survival HORROR game this generation, it stays close to it's roots.
Inception  +   1341d ago
Wrong. Play Siren: The New Translation and Amnesia: The Dark Decent. That's the TRUE SURVIVAL HOROR game for this generation!

Well after seeing some gameplay it totally put me off I loved the old style gameplay in res 1,2,3,4 and 5 was ok but this just looked horrible I think it's been ruined.
Bathyj  +   1341d ago
Didnt see that coming.
Gen0ne  +   1341d ago
Sigh... Would someone please pick up Amnesia for consoles so I can be scared again? Not picking this up. The final RE straw for me was when they chased after you on motorcycles. Couldn't believe it.
supraking951  +   1341d ago
lol Amnesia, its that the only "scary" game out there? How old is that game? Why dont you ask for Amnesia 2 and see if those creators can keep there series scary, I'm guessing they can't and wont
Uncharted2Vet  +   1341d ago
Why dosent a publisher bundle both games together id buy that
beerkeg  +   1341d ago
@supraking951

Amnesia came out in 2010, so it's not that old. And Frictional Games have managed to make each game more scary. They started out with the Penumbra series which were also horror games. Amnesia is their best and creepiest game so far, so they have improved with each new release.

So I'm guessing they can keep their series scary, and improve more as they go.

Capcom could learn a lot from them.
supraking951  +   1341d ago
of course its going action, its zombies!!! There's no horror in zombies anymore, just comedy. How many games are in the RE series? With all the television shows, movies, and games having zombies in them, how can a new RE game be considered Survival Horror? You'd only set yourself up in disappointment.
Dead Space series is considered survival horror but for how long? I think gamers will find that there atmosphere which was once scary wont be anymore, they cant make 10 games like RE and still be horror.
The best you can do is make a great action game and RE has done that with RE5 and soon RE6
MrMister  +   1341d ago
I still hate that RE has no more horror, but you bring a very good point that not many have considered. Well, lets at least hope they can keep the survival aspect of it, even if it's losing the horror. A low amount of ammo, and running away, will be all the hope we hve left for the series

Resident Evil was always about having a limited number of supplies.

Kratoscar2008  +   1341d ago
We need RE OUTBREAK and FILE 2 HD colecction, that is the future of RE or better create RE OUTBREAK FILE 3.
Kyosuke_Sanada  +   1341d ago
This gamer speaks the truth!!!
Kratoscar2008  +   1341d ago
With this gen online capabilities is unfair that RE OUTBREAK SERIES doesnt continue, luchily RE ORC success encourage Cashcom to revive OUTBREAK.
