Kotaku: E3 2012 Proves That JRPGs Are Still Kicking

Fortunately, the real E3—that is, the show floor, where you could go around and play tons and tons of video games—looked drastically different than the pressers. And there were exciting JRPGs all over the place, from the gorgeous Ni no Kuni to the nostalgic Final Fantasy Dimensions. (3DS, Android, E3, Final Fantasy: Dimensions, Fire Emblem: Awakening, iPad, iPhone, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Persona 4: The Golden, PS3, The Last Story, Wii, Xbox 360)

It's nothing without Konami's Suikoden, MediaVision's Wild Arms, or even Sony's Legend of Dragoon.

We need some for the consoles, not just portable. Atlus hasn't made any rpgs for the console since PS2.

Would not mind it in the slightest if Persona 4 Golden got a release on either 360 or PS3.

Ni No Kuni looks like a fantastic game.

Unfortunately the rest are a) spinoffs b) ports c) sjrpgs

Nothing wrong with sjrpgs but the focus is usually on strategy gameplay rather than story in those games so I personally prefer jrpgs. I would much rather see more fresh ip like Ni No Kuni or at least wholehearted games like that.

"Nothing wrong with sjrpgs but the focus is usually on strategy gameplay rather than story"

Say's who?
- Valkyria Chronicles is an (hybrid action) SRPG that had good story besides amazing gameplay
- Disgaea also had funny story and i really enjoy it.
- Radiant Historia, SMT: Devil Survivor, Tactics Ogre also had great story besides great gameplay.

And there's a lot of SRPG that had great story such as FF Tactics or Front Mission 1-5 (not the Evolved one). So please, if you don't know shit about SRPG than i beg you to shut up :)

Radiant Historia is not an sjrpg

Its a turn based RPG much like FFX with enemies on a 3x3 grid and enemy encounters/ adventuring and puzzles.

It is great though.

Whilst Disgaea has a decent story it has like 2-3hours of story content and expects 200+ hours out of you.

I also feel you miss out on the journeying / adventuring side of things in SJRPGs, as they only present you with a map screen. Not particularly fond of that when looking for a game with a good story / immersive qualities.

Not that I don't like that kind of game, just that I like that kind of game for different reasons than I like traditional jrpgs.

"Whilst Disgaea has a decent story it has like 2-3hours of story content and expects 200+ hours out of you."

I don't think that's a problem because NIS made Disgaea just like that to show Disgaea are different from other SRPG.

"I also feel you miss out on the journeying / adventuring side of things in SJRPGs, as they only present you with a map screen. Not particularly fond of that when looking for a game with a good story / immersive qualities."

Lol nice excuse. After complaining SRPG lack of good story now you complained about real time exploring. What's next sir? SRPG doesn't have green space marine who kick some alien ass?

"Not that I don't like that kind of game, just that I like that kind of game for different reasons than I like traditional jrpgs."

Lol, this showed that you never play SRPG because you never like it in the beginning -_-

Not sure how appreciating different qualities in sjrpgs to jrpgs showed I'd never played them...

I have Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 2, Resonance of Fate, FF Tactics (PS1), Disgaea 3 PS3, Disgaea 1, Phantom Brave across PS3 / Vita.

I just would prefer new, jrpgs.

As stated in the artical south park the stick of truth is not a JRPG but I still want this game to be good. Ni No Kuni looks fantastic is it on console?
Wolfbiker  +   375d ago
Everything about it is jrpg except its being made in California.

And Ni No Kuni is exclusive to the PS3.

Yes, JRPG are still kicking and i never feel that JRPG are dying like western media told me this years.

Well, some titles like Suikoden, Wild Arms, Breath of Fire, Dark Cloud, or Valkyrie Profile are missing some new action in HD console. And FF...well, as we all knew that FF aren't as good as in SNES/PS1 era.

But, we got some new fresh IP like Valkyria Chronicles, Demon / Dark Souls, Ni no Kuni, White Knight Chronicles, Ressonance of Fate, and so on. Also Tales series, Atelier series, Disgaea series are still kicking in HD consoles.

So yeah, once again JRPG are still alive and kicking.

JRPGs were never NOT kicking. Their presence hasn't been as heavily felt on consoles this generation, but there've been many good games, and some true gems, as well.

Ni No Kuni will be the first JRPG worth playing on PS3 everything else released till now was mediocre, Ni No Kuni represent all what a JRPG is, it have the likeable characters, an amazing story that pushes u forward, a fantastic fairy-like world fully explorable with world map, good old turn based battle system with real time movement on the field of battle & an amazing soundtrack to complete the package, and that's how a JRPG must be my friends.

Level-5 & Studio Ghibli deliver some lessons to the retards at SE that they didn't make an FF worth playing for the past 10 years now I hope they'll learn something from Ni No Kuni.
