The 10: Most Tragic Heroes in Gaming

Tyler Phillips writes:

"At the root of every story, there are two final categories – Comedies and Tragedies. Traditionally, a tragedy ends with death and bad news, though by today’s standards it’s taken on a less literal tone. This is not to say, however, that tragic events do not still exist. The following list contains the most tragic characters in gaming. I must stress that these are in fact opinions. Also, HUGE spoiler warning – if you see a game title that you’ve not finished and don’t want spoiled, I’d skip over it." (Assassin's Creed, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Dragon Age: Origins, Gears of War, Lost Odyssey, PC, PS3, Red Dead Redemption, Retro, Warcraft series, Wii U, World of Warcraft, Xbox 360)

Someone hasn't played SOTC before.

That's rather disappointing, to be honest.

Edit: I would add Shion from Xenosaga, once you find out the truth behind everything in Episode III. She got screwed on multiple levels.

The lack of Raziel in this list is disturbing. IMO, Raziel is the personification of tragic and drama.

(Legacy of Kain series spoilers )
A vampire, loyal to the end, get betrayed, banned and tortured because he evolved before his master.

A thousand year later, he is resurrected, kills his whole clan, chase his master in Time, discover he's been manipulated and kills himself.

The relation between Raziel and Kain is one of the best I've ever seen in video games.

The lack of Raziel is why I came here.

Kain: You see Raziel? You are but a pawn in the circle of time. No one shall remember you, for the coin of rememberance has landed on it's edge. The generation of past can only remember what is left from the endurance of time. At best the generation of today will receive a glimpse of our true light. If that coin lands in their favor Raziel, we will be nothing more than a DLC pack for another franchise.

Raziel: What madness is THIS? I will not be chained to the fate of some "Lara Croft" and her guardian of light DLC. You have tinkered with fate for the last time Kain. I will not spend eternity shooting projectiles from an alien metal. I rather be thrown into the Abyss than to succumb to such torture!

How can they forget Solid Snake?

Gaming has changed. It's no longer about collection, ownership, or artistic ideology. It's an endless series of fashion battles fought by social and popular elitists . Online - and its consumption of life - has become a well-oiled service. Gaming has changed. ID-tagged accounts carry ID-tagged platforms, use ID-tagged software. Nanomachinic DLC inside their game data enhance and regulate their abilities. Motion control. Information control. Software control. Online control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. Gaming has changed. The age of skill has become the age of control... All in the name of averting piracy from mass distribution. And he who controls the living room... controls history. Gaming has changed. When the living room is under total control... thought becomes routine.
