Why the Wii U Literally Can’t Stand Up

Kotaku:

Unlike a Wii, an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3, the Wii U console can't stand up.

You can't prop the system up vertically without it falling over. Horizontal is the only option. The new Nintendo console must lie on its belly like a Nintendo Entertainment System or a really lazy house cat

I prefer my consoles to lay flat. For some reason it seems weird when I turn them vertical.

Not to mention a teeny-weeny bit risky.

Nintendo know the sort of base they are catering to, guess why Wii is the highest selling console this gen. Its cause Nintendo knows the demands of console gamers.

With this decision they have just made it easy for the customer, by just giving them one choice. Nintendo knows giving the base more than 1 choice can confuse them so they just decide to dumb things down to the simplist possible way. Ms and Sony need to watch and learn.

Edit: after some thought i realise why nintendo has decided to go with a large flat controller. Nintendo realises console gaming is supposed to be lazy and relaxed(to be played from a relaxing couch). Hence they decided to give it a large flat controller, the extra space would serve perfectly to keep a pizza slice, chocos etc. Imo despite what all the nay sayers have to say i think Nintendo have a winner on their hands.

Ya, I always feel hesitant when standing consoles up vertically. Probably cause they're always kinda wobbly when I do...

i prefer them to lie horizontal as well - mostly because i don't like having a disc spinning in the system vertically... it seems like there's a greater risk of something going wrong with the disc.

that being said, i've noticed that - at least with the PS3 - that standing it vertically makes it run cooler. because the heat sinks are on the very bottom of the unit, when it's sitting horizontally, there's very little air flow where they are.

really, though, i don't see why not being able to stand it upright is such a big deal. seems like kotaku is just trolling... frankly, i'm surprised it's not another article where they s**t-talk sony the whole time. i guess that's tomorrow?

There is nothing wrong with having the PS3 vertical.

This is my PS3. Perfectly safe! Even if it wasn't confined there I still don't have an issue with it vertical. But that may be because the fat PS3 seems to have an easier time staying vertical. Seeing as how its bigger and thicker.

Sorry for the mess!

@zeal0us

Well Said

This article sounds so petty , makes me wonder what they will think of next e.g. "The Wii U is too white"

3GenGames1934d ago (Edited 1934d ago )

Why raise them vertically? They can fall and you can't put anything on top of them if you do that. Nobody else puts something on top of their consoles?

I had one of the older, white 360s a ways back. I used to keep it sideways in its cubicle. One day, I hard a loud SMACK and the thing was vertical. I never put up a console sideways without some sort of support or stand ever again.

Skate-AK1934d ago

I think you mean SMACK it landed horizontal. Vertical is up and down.

PopRocks3591934d ago

Yeah, you're right. Fail on my part. Won't let me edit it too. :/

Not a very good article at all...
