SmartGlass and Why It Actually Is Smart

DigitalNoob's Stephen Fournier writes:

"Of all the things I saw during the major press conferences of E3, Microsoft’s SmartGlass tech is the only thing that really blew me away. The new SmartGlass technology is an application that is set to connect your phone, PC, or tablet to your 360 console in a new way. From what I’ve been reading, most people seem to be focusing on the idea that it is just another controller with a touchscreen in a similar fashion to the Wii U. In fact, I’ve even seen some claims that this is just Microsoft’s response to Nintendo’s new controller. I can probably blame that misconception on the Madden part of the conference, but I digress."

The story is too old to be commented.

Smart Glass is the smartest thing to come out of the main press conferences.

It's not just a controller, it's software that turns any hardware into a console device. This type of software development is what we need in a world splintered by platform (Android, iOS, and Windows being the primary ones). This type of software allows a person to utilize their console to its fullest without requiring any specific hardware.

I am very surprised at Microsoft coming out with this, but this is exactly what the next generation needs for phone and tablet integration with our consoles. Best part is, it can be constantly upgraded or patched on a game-by-game basis to increase the functionality. There are no hardware requirements, all software.

that it works on any device and you don't have to buy a new device for it to work

Smart move by Microsoft... almost everybody owns a smartphone or tablet.

Moentjers2237d ago

and almost none of them run on their OS...

"and almost none of them run on their OS... "

Ever heard of Windows 8 or Windows Mobile? Did you know that they belong to Microsoft ?

I agree its a very goof move by MS and I have been saying for years MS are the best placed company to make all devices work together from PC tablet server and Phone.

The one thing MS have over Sony and Apple is they make software on all platforms and don't keep everything on there hardware. I also think this is the right way to use IE on the 360 too. I need to try it but using the browser on my PS3 or Sony tv is poor so being able to use Kinect and a phone/Tablet to control the browser is very good. I also like the idea of being able to use my zune pass on my pc but have it coming out of the 360 and not using a 3rd party app like Zune Mote connected to my home server to use my zune pass music.

I have been saying for a long time Microsoft are getting one eco system and they are now going the right way about them selfs and not making millions of devices to do different things but none of them work together.

I cant wait to have Windows Phone 8 on my Lumia 900 and I will be picking up a Windows 8 tablet too as it offers more than my xoom.

Uh? Am I the only one that doesn't have a smartphone or a tablet? Got a creepy feeling about the whole thing.

In my case it seems i would need to buy another tablet or phone as they made no mention of blackberry support. :(

Oh well, maybe they'll change their minds or i'll invest in a cheap android tablet from japan just for smartglass use.

From what I've read you can use it for games. Obviously not as flexible or capable as the Wii U touch screen controller but not that far off.
