If it's not replayable, they often call that "used".

Ducky4341d ago

... and as everyone knows, the best way to ensure replayability is to tack on multiplayer.

Amazingmrbrock4341d ago

or they could make a really amazingly written and fun to play game that you just can't put down for a couple hundred hours.

SJPFTW4341d ago

Skyrim and other Elder Scrolls games are replayable without multiplayer because they concentrate on giving lots of content... sadly other games don't follow suit

also bad multiplayer does not make a game replayable. Its either its a good game or its not overall

Trenta274341d ago

Gears was never really a replayable game. Once was more then enough.

Trenta274341d ago

That doesn't really add replay valve. It's fun for awhile, but that's it.

lastdual4341d ago

I would definitely disagree.

As far as the campaigns go, splitscreen co-op alone added a ton of replay value, and even if you don't do competitive multiplayer, horde mode was a blast to play repeatedly with friends.

crzyjackbauer4341d ago

i love gears 1 co op
one of the best co op games imo

ShaunCameron4341d ago

To be fair, most video games in general aren't really replayable.

modesign4341d ago

even blizinski is jealous of The last of us.

WeskerChildReborned4341d ago

It's actually true even though some non replayable games(get's boring after a while) are still good but games that give you more variety tend to have more replayability.

smashcrashbash4341d ago (Edited 4341d ago )

I am sorry but not everyone thinks 'replayablity' means MP. I barely can stand playing MP. The only MP I ever thought was worth it was UC2. Besides, MP these days usually is just an excuse to turn single player into 'practice' for it.Many games were excellent without MP in the old days.

Also giving you endless tasks that really don't have much point isn't the answer either. Spending hours searching the hills for herbs and flowers and minerals to make a weapon that is weaker or only slightly better then one I already have is annoying at best.Borderlands giving you a million guns that were barely distinguishable between each other was pointless too.To some extent I agree that replayablity makes a better game but not the way many developers do it.

GameGuy4341d ago

What kind of games truly have a good replay value then? All that Herb and flower searching was annoying but overall I thought Red Dead Redemption was great.

smashcrashbash4341d ago

My point is to make it interesting. Most tasks used to extent game play are annoying as you say. They put them in and don't make you care in any way about them. It is like a distraction to make sure you don't see how short your game is from the main quest.I am sure many people looked for the herbs and flowers but did you really want too especially if you finished the game before you did?

In GTA 4 they seemed as if they were forcing you do things just to extent the games replayablity. The keep up friendship and dating thing seemed more annoying then fun in any way.Even going to strip clubs was a task not worth doing in my opinion. I understand the need to extent a game's life but I think sometimes the tasks and the MP are specifically built just to shove some sort of replayablity down your throat.

But that is just me. I would prefer a game to be good and just end rather then realize I didn't do some task that I don't feel like doing or play some MP that can only survive as long as I keep paying for DLC or wander the hills forever looking for some purple flower I missed or coin that was behind some rock 10 stages back. In my opinion people would make better games if they weren't so busy thinking how to make you replay it and concentrate on making a good game in the first place.

Flower and Journey ended for example and were a great experiences despite their length. Okami and Psychonauts had tasks that were fun to do and were integrated into the game. They felt like actual things that get you somewhere. In Oblivion I wandered around with a thousand things in my possession afraid to throw them away because I thought I might need them again sometime in the far future and when I did finally meet someone who do need something I have I find out what they gave me is no where near to what I need or useless to me at this point.Long story short the things they use to extend the game are not always as fun as advertised.

Gears of War: Judgment - 10 Years of Gears' Most Misunderstood Release

Gears of War: Judgment launched 10 years ago today, and quickly became one of the most misunderstood titles in the series.

ZwVw407d ago

Easily the best control-wise of the series. Judgment introduced melee-ing with the lancer and is still the only installment of the series (to date) which enables you to change weapons while roadie running simultaneously.

Gears 2&5 are the worst controlling in the series.

ocelot07407d ago

It killed the series for me tbh.

Sciurus_vulgaris407d ago

The Arcady aspects of the campaign should have been unlocked after completing a campaign play through. Seeing score screen after battles caused awkward pacing. The multiplayer was too different from other Gears games.

giovonni407d ago

Judgment felt more like an expansion than an actually game. To me, I was fatigued from the series at that point. The story was ok, over all it wasn’t bad.

Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.

My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)

ChasterMies672d ago

Agree 100% with this ranking. The campaign in Gears of War 2 is among the most fun campaigns ever made. It’s been downhill from there.

Zombieburger638672d ago

I’d say gears 2 and 3 are pretty even. I absolutely loved both of them.

darthv72673d ago

2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.

Jericho1337673d ago

The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.

I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Om4ever672d ago

Naaaan ... 2 is the best by far

MadLad673d ago

3
5
2
1
4
Judgement

I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.

LoveSpuds673d ago

I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.

Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.

It's brilliant but personally liked part one more. It's the only one that had a near horror movie vibe to it in parts, the atmosphere was amazing.

Also, the commercial for it was 🔥🔥🔥

https://youtu.be/wy8LRlS1SC...

Neonridr806d ago

Mad World was such a perfect song for that trailer. I loved part 1 too just because it was so fresh at the time. The series has been solid, but experiencing everything for the first time was pretty awesome.

ChasterMies806d ago

Gears of War 2 has one of the greatest campaigns of all time. Carmine, all that juice, fighting inside a giant worm, and riding monsters.

Knightofelemia807d ago

Gears 1 and 2 will always be my favorite Gears titles. The scene where Dom find his wife and then has to shoot her was an epic scene.

monkey602806d ago

I always found that scene laughably bad myself. Fantastic game though.

1 will always be my favourite. Most were great with the exception of 4 being okay and judgement being terrible.

They still have the most satisfying headshots from any multiplayer game around.

lucian229806d ago

Nah I laughed, the acting was soooooooooo bad

KicksnSnares807d ago

My favorite Gears game list
1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 1
4. Gears 4
5. Gears 5
6. Gears Judgement

Gears Of War is my favorite video game franchise. I can’t imagine how Gears 6 will look in UE5 after watching Hellblade 2 gameplay trailer

RetroCaptainSteve807d ago

Or if they remake 2 and 3 with that engine.

KicksnSnares807d ago

There is a rumored Marcus Fenix collection (Gears 2 & 3 remake) in the works at the Coalition. Hopefully, it’s true, but I doubt it.

Profchaos806d ago

For me you can't beat gears 1 the original was so fresh and revolutionary at the time.
Then basically I'd rank it 2,3,5,4 and judgement

Viljong806d ago (Edited 806d ago )

One of the reasons why i got the series x. Been fan since the first game.

myfathersbastard806d ago

Played them all recently on gamepass. Great games. But my favorites gotta be gears tactics. Don’t know why. I just had a blast with it lol
