I love the Max Payne series. When I first heard there was going to be a Max Payne 3, my gut reaction was to cheer out loud and pump my fist in the air. Of course, several factors then tempered my good humour: all the important characters, save for Max, were dead; the series was hardly relevant to modern gaming, considering Max Payne 2 came out almost a decade ago; and worst of all, Remedy wasn’t developing it. All of these factors set off my nostalgic gamer alarm, so that when I started up Max Payne 3, I was looking for reasons to hate it. No dedicated jump button? Cover mechanics? No comic book cutscenes? Multiplayer? A bald max? Edgy and distracting cinematics? Every nostalgic bone in my body told me, “this isn’t MY Max Payne,” and urged me to reject it.
