Microsoft Reports 67M Xbox 360 Lifetime Sales, Claiming 47% Market Share

According to Mehdi: "Since 2005 – when we launched Xbox 360 – we have sold 67 million consoles and have generated more than $56 billion at retail, and we’re still going strong in our seventh year. With 47% share of the current-generation console market, we are hitting our stride largely as a result of the success of Kinect for Xbox 360 (19 million sold ) and the flood of new entertainment options through Xbox LIVE (40 million members)."

Wii is around 95 million

PS3 is about 65 million

How does 67 million account for 47% of the market?

PirateThom1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

Even if it was just PS3 and 360 it wouldn't equal 47% of the market... would be above 50%.

You know what I think they're doing... they're ignoring the Wii and including PS3, 3DS and Vita.

NastyLeftHook01998d ago

It really does seem that way.

GribbleGrunger1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

19 million kinects sold? wasn't it 18 million about 5 months ago? doesn't that mean they've only sold 1 million in 5 months. either that or they lied 5 months ago

i think they're also adding Kinect into that 47% and, as others have said, ignoring Wii

SuperLupe1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

Its funny you people are all riled up about the 47%, who cares.

67 million is huge, by the end of the year they'll be over 70 million. Who would have believed that back in 2005 ?

decrypt1998d ago

I wonder how many of those are dead due to RROD lol.

M83_1998d ago

^^^ oh I'd say a good unhealthy chunk of them have flatlined by now.

Imalwaysright1998d ago

"Its funny you people are all riled up about the 47%, who cares." Maybe people dont like liars or being adressed as idiots, as if we didnt know or understand what theyre talking about so they throw us random numbers and expect us to cheer them because we dont know any better? They must believe that we're all gullible 5 years old or that we dont have a single drop of logic in hour bodys. PR people of the gaming industry are a joke!

M$ and maths don't seem to get along.

Watch the fanboys wave this "47% market share" like a banner. Hahaha! Seems these last few years of nothing but Kinect games has taught them to wave quite well!

lategamer1997d ago

These numbers are most likely only for America. Try using your head.

fucadastates1998d ago

its the marketshare of US ONLY .. not world.. the number would be to low to make good pr :D

GribbleGrunger1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

yep, you are right, these numbers are for America only!

dubt721998d ago

You don't bring up the worldwide sales figures when talking about the North American marketshare. See my post below...

fermcr1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

"With 47% share of the current-generation console market"

When they say 47% share of the current-generation console market it probably means the money made by the hardware (X360, Kinect) sales, software sales and Live Gold.

They didn't say that 67 million X360 sales represent 47% of the market.

catfrog1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

i think youre confused as to what market share is. market share is the part of the market that one entity is in control of, revenue and profits have nothing to do with market share. though having a high market share generally means higher revenue or profits then competitors, its not always the case, and definitely isnt the case in this situation. theyre spinning things to fit their on marketing goals, its not a new thing in business. microsoft is using an appeal to authority (a logical fallacy) to market to people who dont know any better

fermcr1998d ago

Definition of 'Market Share'

"The percentage of an industry or market's total sales that is earned by a particular company over a specified time period. Market share is calculated by taking the company's sales over the period and dividing it by the total sales of the industry over the same period. This metric is used to give a general idea of the size of a company to its market and its competitors."

Brosy1998d ago

I hate to bust your bubble but PS3 is sitting at about 63 million.

GraveLord1997d ago

They are only counting 2012 sales in America.
Because America = The World

Cocozero1998d ago

MS has certainly gained a huge amount of marketshare from last gen. If they play their cards right next gen they could be number 1.

C0MPUT3R1998d ago

Not going to happen when Xbox is only relevant in NA.

andibandit1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

that part of the problem would be adressed by the

"Play their cards right"

if reading two sentences is too hard for you, you shouldn't be commenting.

i dont think they'll be number 1, and if they do i think it will be for all the wrong reasons, seen from a gamer perspective.

kikizoo1998d ago

Yeah, if "amnesia" or stupidity are ruling the world....

or if ms is joining sony or nintendo, to make the best hardware with best games..

AtomicGerbil1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

47% ?????? Somebody needs to go back to school. I know marketing execs. can be economical with the truth, but this is laughable.

lelo1998d ago

47% share of the current-generation console market ... means all business related to current-generation console market and NOT just console sales. Hardware, software, online, etc.

AtomicGerbil1998d ago

I'm perfectly aware of that, but 47% still seems a little dubious when you consider everything both their competitors have achieved with multiple consoles, services, peripherals and software.

EffectO1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

19 million Kinects?

omg

To people harping about 47%,I don't that refers to console sales...hehe

turnerdc1998d ago

Weird huh? Just goes to show you that the people on N4G are just the minority of the gaming market. If things went the way N4G predicted this thing would of died the minute it came out.

dubt721998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

Do you not all understand that they are referring to overall spending, in terms of hardware (including peripherals) and software? The market share to which they refer is in dollars spent, not in number of systems. They still have the highest life-time attach rate for software, and the sales of the Kinect have reeled in a lot of money. How does no one get this?
Oh, that's right: blind fanboyism...

Jdoki1998d ago (Edited 1998d ago )

What you say makes no sense.

Overall spending has never been used in relation to market share, by any company.

Please go look up a definition of market share. It has almost everything to do with units sold, not amount spent.

Dollars spent on what? Shipping hardware? Marketing? R&D? And how would you work out the market share from spend? Do MS know exactly how much it's competitors have spent on anything to come to the magical 47%?

If you're actually talking about revenue (not spend) as in that 56billion mentioned, it still isn't a meaningful measure of market share because a) they have no idea the true revenue from Nintendo or Sony, and b) revenue is a pointless measure unless you know know profit.

67million units sold is impressive. 47% seems like a random number, or at the least the US market share (still impressive), but lets not twist the figures to score points!

1998d ago
dubt721997d ago

@edonus exactly... Why the hell would I be talking about dollars spent by MS??? ...uck outta here!

Jdoki1997d ago

The real question is why the hell would you be calling revenue, spend; and why the hell you would be trying to equate revenue to market share.
