The Future of PlayStation Plus: E3 2012 and Beyond

Kyle of Vivid Gamer writes:

E3 rumors are swirling; among them are the possibility of a Sony-Gaikai partnership for game streaming and some kind of major Plus announcement. Sony’s June 5 conference is right around the corner and speculation is due. Let’s consider what’s possible (and what could be announced) for the future of PlayStation Plus and PSN at large. (E3, Industry, Next-Gen, PS Vita, PS3, PSP, Tag Invalid)

While the news of a tiered PlayStation Plus service wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be true, I can't see paying $99.99 a year just for free movies. I don't want movies enough to warrant it.

Not movies... free Blu-Ray PS3 titles, as in full retail games.

I must have misread that then.

In that case, $99.99 is still a bit much but I'd be more likely to pay that.

I really hope Sony doesn't go through with the ad-interrupted gameplay idea, but from a business perspective, I could see why they would head in that direction, especially they're relying more and more on a digital strategy for their revenue in order to not have another loss this fiscal year.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if they go through with it though, and whether players eventually accept it or not.

The problem is, streaming games is so new and untested, that whatever step they take risks rejection through the newness of it all. Just as Bethesda overcharged for Horse Armor DLC - they were one of the first to offer DLC, and had to decide on a price with zero precedent and no example to follow.
