IGN: Looking back at IGN's previews of Resistance: Burning Skies, the same idea keeps popping up: this is a handheld first-person shooter that feels like its console brethren. After shoehorning FPS games onto portables for years, having a true dual-stick shooter on the go is exciting -- it's just that Resistance: Burning Skies isn't. Burning Skies is a competent shooter with presentation problems that does little to thrill you. 5.5/10

You guys are acting worse than the fanboys you speak of.
None of the comments above you are bashing anyone.
@Nathan, nah you know I'm right, no use debating my points because this site is well known for only further proof of what I said, so instead you point out that the comments above aren't bashing anyone as if it matters when the majority of the comments on this thread and destuctoid review are full of bashing or damage control posts just like I said. Only reason their ton has lightened on in is because now there are other low reviews, so it doesn't seem like Sterling was "just trolling for hits" after all. Don't get mad just cause you don't like me talking about it.
the least you guys couldve done is post your rant under a comment actually bashing this review or reviewer.....Posting it under neutral comments makes it look like you are trying to troll the very people you dislike
@ Humble
I just read more comments below and The people bashing the Vita and Resistance in general outnumber the people bashing IGN or Greg miller
In any case, I'll check it out for myself, at least the demo, before deciding whether to get the game.
How about Sony Bend? the developer who did the Syphon Filters for the PSP (with Dark Mirror being a damn near portable masterpiece), not to mention Resistance: Retribution and others. They would seem like a logical choice to me.
Play the Demo tomorrow. There will be a demo of the game. If you like it , buy it. See for yourself.
It should always be that way, people should rarely pay attention to reviews.
Conversely, despite my numerous accolades towards the Halo series, I turned down the purchase of ODST despite the glowing reviews from IGN and everyone else; because having sampled the game, I didn't think it would be worth the purchase. In the end, I was correct: although that decision was for me only, the general consensus was that ODST wasn't the best of the lot by a lot of people I had conversations with concerning ODST.
People possessing the intellect to look at a good or bad review, getting the demo, and making a decision independent of reviews are slowly becoming a rare gift amongst the thinking populace, sadly.
Now I just hope whatever decision they make will make them happy. :)
even though i wont hold my breath.
Wow 5 disagrees, this proves how much power a number has on gamers -_-
If you like FPS games, go for it... or wait for more opinions... never said the game is bad nor good.
Just saying for gamers to think for themselves, or actually read the review without focusing on the 5.5
2nd RFoM is far from being a wanna be shooter and imo is better than any Halo. R2 and R3 were a disgrace trying copy CoD.
3rd If PS3 owners wanted to play better quality FPS they shoud NEVER buy a 360. They should invest on a PC where ALL the great shooters are.
Yet I might pick it, couple of my PSN friends are going to buy this game. I'll ask their opinion and then decide probably. Also I'm looking forward to multiplayer.
But overall, I expected more from Burning Skies.
for me i never really care about reviews.
Lol. Nothing to see here. Move on...
Oh those Manchester games of capture the flag. EPIC.
I love Resistance, and I deny it. Resistance Fall of Man had a fantastic campaign AND a fantastic multiplayer. Resistance 3 only had a fantastic campaign, plus, it was shorter than Resistance Fall of Mans campaign.
R3s multiplayer was okay, but it was kind of average. Unfortunately for the MP, they went the CoD route, which was disappointing, and they also reduced the player count and map size by a lot.
ehm... i can't understand how there can be so much difference between the first reviews(9 and 8.5)
were those ones blinded and IGN is the one to be believed or there is something more that i simply don't get?
of course i'm not even counting that trolling "2" from Destructoid :/
So sick of reviewers. Ive seen enough screenshots and seen enough gameplay to know I want this game. I dont need a review. Eff this guy and Ign, total trash.
I found this review to be well written as it gave good reasoning for each of his cons.
If your the kind of guy who will play anything FPS then go for it, he said it would be fine for people who like even the barebones FPS.
Resistance:BS isn't as good as its console counterparts, so it gets lower scores.
3DS:
Kid Icarus: Uprising is the best third-person action title available on the 3DS, so it gets a perfect score! God of War does not exist.
you are doing it right!
I'll have to wait until tonight for that though.
This has nothing to do with damage control. I'm not convincing people one way or another with my posts on a gaming forum. Lol. Let's be realistic here. I just think double standards are very much a part of this generation of handhelds.
@ Nimblest Assassin
I didn't claim Uncharted Golden Abyss to be a true Uncharted title, I stated that it captured the feel, identity and in some places the fun. It had a strong connection to the rest of the series through the utilisation of Drake, Motion capture acting, intriguing implementations of climbing and more. Burning Skies seems to be a straight forward, generic FPS, no recurring characters from other instalments, a terribly told story with uninteresting characters and no unique features...
It doesn't match the Han held God of War titles and Uncharted Golden Abyss...
People just focus on numbers so much, they miss the big picture, that their opinion is whats important. Frankly I do not care for the score, but rather I read reviews to know what to expect.
Also, as a huge Uncharted fan, I can't really consider GA a true Uncharted in my opinion. It just lacked the magic the console games had, and was riddled with these annyoing gestures that pulled me out of the immersion, something the console games do incredibly well.
The vita is still young, hell Francis said it best Greatness from small beginings
EDIT: @koh08 Yeah that was one of the biggest selling points, and I don't think it was smart of Sony. I have MLB 12 and while you can keep playing on your Vita, graphical quality and many features are lost in the process.
Now I know that's an unreasonable goal for a handheld, but if that's a claim Sony wants to encourage, it's one worth holding them to I guess.
Oh well the guy didn't like it so what? Lots of people were so so on Resistance 3 and i tough it was awesome. Again don't base your purchase on 1 person review.
I'll be playing Gravity Daze while you're sitting on the fence wondering it the Vita is worth it.
XperiaRay
I already have a copy on the way, got it at a steal to so I personally cannot wait.
And sure enough they didn't disappoint.
What Halo brought to the world of console FPS, the perfect control calibration (unusual at the time), the creative enemy classes, the AI, the seemless inclusion of vehicles in single player, the risky gameplay twists with the Flood, the open level design, the writing, the non-reliance on obvious scripting, the all real-time cutscenes...
I mean, Halo has its flaws with cut and paste rooms and backtracking but come on, comparing Halo with Resistance in terms of relevance is an insult.
Resistance is just the weapon gimmick from the far more innovative platform/light RPG/shooter hybrid Ratchet games (sadly overlooked because it's about cutesy mascots instead of ugly aliens), applied to a random FPS template.
The main Resistance games are OK, they are competent, but they are rated lower than Halo simply because they are not as unique.
So it's only logical that when an ugly Resistance spin off done by one of Sony's B-team studios pops up, it's rated even lower.
If anything, if that game was a Halo game, it would possibly get savaged even more, given the absurd lowering of standards it would represent for the Halo franchise.
And yes I own a PS3.
* Not a fan of Resistance.
* Halo would have to be using the same config in control setup as this.
* Vita would have to be made by xbox that is fiction.
* Im a big fan of Halo always have been. Personally i don't like what the recent Halo games have done but give me back my xboxv1 and 4 systems in system link and im in heaven again.
* I do believe over the years IGN has been bias towards PS3 thats my opinion i also think GameTrailers are as bad.
Only thing that interested me was the Firefight that was all that kept me going back.
As far as Combat Evolved Anniversary went all i kept thinking was waste of time.
I prefer to play the orignal still to this day. I still have my xboxv1 working with four Dukes and a crap load of controller s's for back up. :).
Now onto your other comment. "It's cool though, you're just in damage control mode"
Well id have to own a vita first pal ;) Im getting one soon lol. But thats the one handheld i haven't purchased as of yet.
Uncharted GA is first on my list of titles.
Bummer ey ;).
oookeee :/
See, some games get higher reviews because they are played by people that like them (Call of Duty comes to mind, MW2 was reviewed by Boson who LOVES the franchise). However, there's some games that are reviewed by people that don't like those types of games. I just wish they would stay a little consistent with that.
I'll play the demo, and we'll see. This game never looked that good though but I'll play it because I like the Resistance story.
Shame, this will probably be the last Resistance game to come out...
I guess that last part makes sense really since he's reviewing for IGN and they're flooded with pre-teens which are some of the most annoying and ignorant users on the internet.
I will give this game a chance with the demo coming out tommorrow to make my judgement. Also i guess we have to take account that this IS a first generation Vita game, they will only get better (hopefully) as developers learn the system more.
Just like with Sony Bend taking another crack at an Uncharted Vita game, i wanna see Nihilistic take another crack at Resistance. If that game is bad/mediocre too than these scores are justified.
Let me just tell you guys that I'm probably the biggest Resistance fan on this website. I have played and beaten every Resistance game on PS3 multiple times and on the hardest difficulties.
When I look at gameplay footage for BurningSkies, I could easily tell theres a lot wrong about the game. It has a huge lack of polish in graphics and sound design. The guns sound like farting noises. Definitely not the same level as an Insomniac title.
I knew something would go wrong with this game simply because of the fact that Nhilistic was developing it. Why the fuck Sony gave the rights to them is beyond me, and will be something I will never understand.
This is all speculation, because i cant see why Sony has so much faith in this studio, when every game they have ever made is crap.
