I'm interested in picking this up, but I'm dubious because of Capcom's recent bad track record with games. Would you guys recommend this? Is it like a cross between say Dragon Age 1 and Dark Souls / Demon Souls?
You're right about the cross detection, and you need to get this. The game is deep, rewarding, fun, challenging and i find myself laughing from time to time, not because of faults or glitches, but simply out of joy. Let's call it giggles?
- Also, I just killed my first Drake. Lvl 36 and owned that bish.
I highly recommend it. Its a bit of everything, action based, rpg, lots of main and side quests, great world and environments, etc. Right now i have just changed my character to a hybrid assassin class! The hybrids are awesome!!! Very good game!
@Darth Gamer I would say read the reviews, but take them with a grain of salt. I remember the IGN review, 7/10. But they basically said that the gameplay was amazing, huge area to explore, the outdoors look good, amazing boss fights, lots of armor / weapons / you can buff them, the main story was good (not epic), and tons of hours to invest in it.
They said they hated the ye old English, no instant port travel like Skyrim, and the side quests didn't have a great story (how many open world games have amazing side quests... Only some of Skyrim's Deadric quests were amazing for me - love the Gabberwalky quest [spelling]).
And what I took from that the important ones to me: great combat, boss battles, a good story to go with it, and tons of hours of gameplay. And I actually like the ye old English they're using, it makes it different from all the other games doing the same thing.
I think this is the RPG I've been wanting Capcom to make since playing Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, It's actually more like an upgraded Monster HunterTri with a bigger emphasis on questing and an interesting party mechanic. I'm loving it, the pawn system is excellent, when your pawn goes off into the Rift they gain quest knowledge if the player who hires them does quests which you haven't done and they'll give you hints when you do the quest yourself.
I love the Day/Night dynamic, it's actually scary when you get caught outside in the dark and you can hear wolves and other monsters howling and grunting just outside your lamplight, then they suddenly attack and it's a fight to the death.
Graphically it's not up to Skyrim standard but the world is pretty, it's not like it's a butt ugly environment like Fist Of The North Star, it's pleasing to the eye in the same way that Nier or Final Fantasy XI are, nice colour palette, good environmental sounds.
I'm starting to look less and less at reviews these days. Unless something gets scored something less than a 5, I usually just decide for myself if I'd be interested in a certain game or not. I mean, MW3 got 9's and I hated it.... this is getting 7's and I love it... So obviously just looking at reviews isn't going to help lol
Exactly. Now a days, review scores only matter if you see some ugly ratings there, because it may be broken, otherwise, it so messed up that a number can mean anything.
Welcome to gaming journalist, the only place where 2+2=5.
@godzilla72, thanks for that video, honestly that combat looks amazingly fun. I'm really going to check this game out now. How did this game get so under hyped?
@Chad22hkd Hey, that was me that left that wonderful video. LOL Funny thing sort of about that though, I got a friend of mine into this game and he texted me yesterday saying he just beat a cyclope but it took hime 2 DAY and NIGHT CYCLES OF GAME TIME. I was laughing my ass off. He was so proud!!!!
I have never liked playing RPGs, with the exception of Kingdom Hearts, this game however has got me hooked on it so bad it's one of those games in which when you're at school or work your constantly thinking about and trying to figure out how to find Tomes and what not. Its a brilliant game and really surprised Capcom didn't do much to advertise it more. The combat on its own is phenomenal it's basically a Devil May Cry game in an RPG world, it is actually the reason I got it really l, being the DMC fan that I am this was a no brainier. It is the most fun I had since Uncharted 3. Anyone who loves action games buy this game you won't regret it.
Awesome gamem and after reading the GR Future Soldier user reviews, Im even more glad I got this instead. Loving the Japanese/Western feel to it. World is detailed and... dare I say it, FAR more alive than Skyrim (which seems so bland at times)
9/10 for me.
I felt the exact opposite way. The towns seem desolate, and don't enjoy the visuals turning conversations not nearly as much. In fact, instead of thinking about how awesome the game is when listening to a character talk, like I usually do in skyrim, I sit thinking about how unfinished everything outside of combat feels.
There are parts that are great - like the combat, and environments and lighting outside of town. But it's far too unpolished for a game of it's scale. There parts that have noticeably been neglected.
Some of the people you talk to are placed as though no one ever took the time to give attention to the backdrop behind.
And the fact that it can't run full-screen, and must always have the black letterbox borders, is pretty unacceptable, IMO.
This game is way better then skyrim!!! This game is solid play it and you will see!! If skyrim is the top RPG in its class, then this is x100 better the combat is epic!! Not like other games where u swing your sword at the air!!!
Freshnikes, demonstrating everything that is wrong with this place. If you're playing ES for the combat, you're doing it wrong.
Dragons Dogma would be great if!
A) The large world had a purpose to it.
B) Any part of it beyond the combat was remotely interesting.
C) They letterboxed Monster Hunter on the Wii, it was a technical thing. Looks like more of the same here, and yes I personally find it kinda annoying.
If you're enjoying the game great, but coming out and making sweeping statements like "Its better then Skyrim" is dumb.
Ravenor, demonstrating everything that's wrong with this place. Your opinion is your opinion. Fun is subjective. Give me Dragon's Dogma all day. I'll buy the next ES game because I've played and enjoyed them all, but I'll be far more excited if and when a sequel to Dragon's Dogma is announced.
@ravanor Skyrim is story is so amazing right? Come on really? I bought skyrim had it for a little over a week and could not enjoy it I never got into going to the magic school n all that, why? Combat is not the most important thing in any game, but when ur combat consist of getting kills by swinging your weapon at the air that's not fun considering u have to battle something about 75% of the game!!
Don't know if Demon Souls/Dark Souls is a good comparison. Only because of the the soul crushing difficulty of the aforementioned. Dragon's straddles the line of difficulty. Basically, pay attention and LISTEN to your pawns. Even though you'll want them to shut up, if you listen to them, they'll save your ass. I compare this more to the Witcher/Skyrim and I'll take DD over both. DD is fun.
Edit: to anyone calling DD unfinished, then goes on to tout the greatness of Skyrim. I mean come on, Skyrim is one of the greatest unfinished games in current gen history. Side by side with Fallout. Another Bethesda game. In summary, just because its unfinished, doesn't mean its not fun. And, more importantly, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?
tis your opinion but i will still call you a fool BUT that is also MY opinion so we are even.
please don't bring DD into an argument against the witcher it just makes you look stupid.
demon's souls difficult???? you mean a crap dice rolling system that forces you to to loose. try playing the witcher 2 vanilla before it got its difficulty dropped because it was TOO hard.
witcher 2 = hardest setting (before update) will murder you.
demon's souls = dice rolling combat with the enemy always rolling the highest.
Dice rolling system? There is no randomness in the souls games. That is literally the entire reason they are so good, as winning or losing comes down entirely to you as a player. If you physically hit the mob with your weapon, you do damage. There is no dice rolling D20 style system where you roll for hits and damage(Kotor style games).
Also, I did play witcher2 before the nerf. Just like dark souls there is no randomness, if you die, its your fault.
I'll call you a fool for saying the combat in the Souls games has anything to do with dice rolling. If you like Skyrim and Witcher 2 better that's your business, but for me Dragon's Dogma is some of the most fun I've had this generation.
Opinion divided? Everyone that's played it, loves it. Sure, it has flaws, but it managed to combine the best elements of all our favorite western-style RPGs seamlessly. Easily the best WRPG this gen.
yeah the reviews got this one wrong, the gameplay is pitch perfect and the world feels adventures and fun to be in.
to be honest this is the game that so many fantasy rpg'ers have been waiting along time for, but i read these reviews and it's like we're playing a completely different game.
my experience in gransys (45hrs) have been nothing short of brilliant, littered with epic moments and high adventure, and i've only done about a hour or two of the main quest.
I got this game today and I am surprised by how good it turned out. I'm not to far in but I was sucked into it shortly after I started. Comparing it to Demon/Dark souls will just leave you let down. Seriously coming from a person who can not stand AI companions in games I really enjoy the pawn system and how intelligent you can make yours or find intelligent ones.
Easily one of my favorite games this gen. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but any game that makes me scared to go out at night gets my kudos. I loved Kingdoms of Amalur ( a little more than Skyrim actually ) and this game trounces that for me.
Yeah it seems to be a happy medium in terms of difficulty, Amalur was so easy it was a waste of time, Darks Souls was so stupidly hard and unfair that it was also a waste of time.
DD falls in the middle and the combat is far deeper than either Amalur or Dark Souls and it's heavy on risk/reward. I'll try not to spoil but I came to a point where the path was blocked by a huge, incredibly strong enemy, I had four options.
-Sneak past and take a side passage, the trade off there was that the way was full of skeletons who would swarm and make life very difficult.
-Fight him head on, which would have probably been a half hour slog of ranged combat and constantly reviving downed pawns.
-Lure him beyond a certain door then close it behind him, that however would have meant dealing with him again on the way back up.
-Trick him into charging off the edge of a precipice, this was the strategy I used in the end, but since you and your pawns can easily fall as well it was a risky manouvre.
This game is great... Reminds me of monster hunter but dark souls thrown in....not too much of a story but there is one....so many options to ply...a mystic mage....a strider....I suggest that anyone who plays video games to pick this up...if you have tried the demo you will have to level up back to that point....also this game map is huge..
I did all the quests in the village and some grinding in the Witchwood and Bandit fort and was at level 16 when I got to the Capitol, since combat is so open ended the only thing I can suggest is to spend as many points as you can on skills for you and your main pawn, make sure you have all the slots and augments filled.
I'm playing it safe with a Magick Archer and Sorcerer with two hired warriors, one tank and one attacking.
Find a rift stone and hire yourself,if you have the RC, some higher level pawns. you hopefully can afford some that are in the level 20 range. Also up your skills and don't forget to set them. Hope this helps. I know what your talking about though. If your not prepared it can be tough going.
Thanks for the advice... so, when you level up, you can actually go into the pause menu and spend points on attributes?
I thought when you leveled up it was automatic, I'll have to check it out...
Thanks again... I'll let you know how it goes..
UPDATE:So, I hired some new pawns and I've been grinding.. killed a cyclops and a bunch of harpies and some skeletons outside of the city... I just hit level 12 and my main pawn died...
Can't seem to figure out how 'up' my skills... can you explain?
@JQM78 nope, when your at an Inn, you can rest, or you can buy skills an attributes and such with discipline points that you have aquired. make sure to set them after you buy them though. that will help ya. good luck. :)
I am not an idiot that rides on some reviewer's marinated left testicle for my purchasing decisions, let alone some score on the Metacritics. I am still interested in trying out this game. Probably the only Capcom game this entire generation that I would enjoy.
I just put 40h into this game (also just completing the main quest) and I had a blast all the way through. The main quest ending was pretty epic. After that ending is a new beginning so without going into further detail, I think folks will have a blast in DD's end game.
Is the combat fun? Definitely. And is the customization engaging? I would say so. But the story in the game so far seems "meh" at best. And the exclusion of fast travel makes traveling a chore at times.
Its a solid title, and I would suggest someone who is curious should try the demo. But this is still a bit away from the league of a "skyrim" so to speak
IT's a game everyone should probably try for themselves because of the deliberate game design choices that appeal to some and are detested by others. If anything, 75 is on the nose as a collective representation of critics that liked it and hated it.
I think that a sequel could right most wrongs with the game next time around.
I find it funny that are so many people complaining about the bad story in this game and still, the souls series were praised all around even if it also don't have any story to speak of as well. I don't remember reading anyone anywhere complaining about the souls series story, so why is it such a big deal with dragon's dogma?
Question for those who have finished it already: Is there a new game + after you hit the end?
Okay, I put in another 10 hours or so into the game. There are floors, but, damn, its brilliant.
@Shinra, you know what? Skyrim I believe gets alot more credit than it deserves. When you look at the game world of Skyrim, and forget its made by Bethesda, you realise its the same thing time and again. The world of Skyrim is very samey. In fact, I prefered Oblivions world.
In any case, Skyrim is a good game, I just feel reviewers glossed over its flaws but chose to tear Dragons Dogma to shreds. Im having far more fun with DD than I did with Skyrim. and "fun" is what gamings about.
There arent game breaking slowdown or glitches in DD either. Funny, how reviewers looked over that in Skyrim reviews.
Would you guys recommend this? Is it like a cross between say Dragon Age 1 and Dark Souls / Demon Souls?
- Also, I just killed my first Drake. Lvl 36 and owned that bish.
ATi_Elite below me put it best. Basically don't trust review scores. Go to You Tube and watch a few videos and make a desicion.
One that I always show people who are on the fence is this one titled assassin vs cyclops.

Hilarious, and typical N4G visitor logic.

I'm level 11 and I'm in the town you escort the snake head to the Duke..
Everywhere I go, I seem to get killed pretty quickly...
Is there an area nearby I can go to Level up?
I've got the strat guide, but it isn't much help...
