GameXplain: "Nintendo just released a high resolution version of their logo mere minutes ago on their official site for press, and it confirms what we've suspected: the name and logo are not changing. Though many had suspected Nintendo might announced a new name and logo at E3, these hopes were when an image of the latest version of the Wii U controller leak, which contained the same logo."

...Anything can happen
Why? wii successor = wii-u simple and being "tied" to the the same name will be an easy sell
@sikbeta
I don't know. Some people thought the 3DS was just another revision for the original DS and not a new handheld. I believe people will think Wii U is just an expensive extension to the original Wii.
Also, There are some dissatisfied consumers (I am not just talking about the Wii, I am talking about every console) and maybe those people wouldn't buy something with "Wii" in the name. I don't know, but Nintendo will obviously find a way to sell it just like they did with the 3DS. Nintendo has good first party games, good marketing and a very well known brand in this industry.
Just call the console "Nintendo" if it bothers you so much.
You as a "hardcore" gamer should focus on the upcoming games. The name is just a name. Branding. Marketing.
"Hardcore" gamers shouldn't even be upset about it. Since when do they care about the names?
If the name is bothering you, what makes you think you can call yourself a "hardcore" gamer if your focus is completely off?

"No offense but it dosen't sound very next gen, it just sounds like an add on or upgrade to the Wii. "
I love it...I mean Playstation 1, 2 and 3 were perfectly fine then?
right.

"Please refrain from jumping to conclusions. I fully plan to get the system, that post was based on what they have said about the market. "
I never claimed you won't get it. I just find it hilariously dumb how "hardcore" is thrown around but no one seems to care that much about games. People complain more about details that dont matter in the end.
It's all just entitlement with juvenile icing on the cake.
I focus on nothing but the games, but it seems like an odd business choice to me, but what I am assuming is they are trying to find a happy middle ground where the core will not dismiss it, but the casuals will stick to the 'Wii' branding.
right."
Because Sony has always done that.
The only time Nintendo repeated a name was with the Nes when they brought out the SNES but that was when the gaming industry was still very young.
Fair enough if Nintendo past consoles were called the Wii, the Wii 2, the Wii 3, the Wii Turbo etc
If they are trying to tap into to the "hardcore" xbox and ps fans, they might want a better name than wii u. I'll buy the system irregardless of its name, but it does sound kind of dumb.
I disagree about the ps1,2, and 3 thing though. The numbers changing show a progress, a continuation from one product to another. Nobody thinks of halo 2 as an add on to halo 1, they think of it as a sequel.
Unless people are really stupid enough to judge it on the name alone. Any self-respecting core gamer should be able to look past it and see the games and features.
No offense but it dosen't sound very next gen, it just sounds like an add on or upgrade to the Wii. It even looks a bit like it although it could of changed since a year has passed since we last saw it.
It's like they are only keeping the name because they want the casual crowd to go "Oh a new Wiim I'm going to buy that" but in my opinion I think it will go something like "Oh a new Wii, no point in buying it since we already have a working one here at home".
When I think of the Wii I think of the casual audience Nintendo went for and it's the same with the Wii U...yet they said they want the core audience back. I just don't get it.
Do Nintendo really know who they are going for, do they still hold on to the chance that the casual crowd will still be interested and will buy the Wii U. If they do then Nintendo will ditch the core again and will probably loose third party support after the PS4/Nextbox comes out.
U have new perspectives on gameplay.
U have more power.
U have the world connected right in front of you.
I don't see the problem with the name, at all.
