Playstation's potential mascots...do they even need one anymore?

The Playstation brand has been in existence since as early as the year 1994. During which time, the brand itself has known many franchises and characters to establish themselves on Playstation systems. However, unlike most other home systems, Playstation has always lacked one thing, a proper mascot. Some may say the brand needs a mascot badly. Others however, say that the brand itself simply has too many main characters to have a single, solid mascot. One thing is certain, the Playstation brand has many contenders for the mascot crown. Let's take a look at some of the former and current most viable contenders.

Whenever I think of Playstation I just think of Snake and Metal Gear Solid... I know MG started out on Nintendo, but Solid is where it really took off. Maybe it's just the fact that the MGS games were so damn good that I can't help but have those as the first things that pop into my mind when I hear Playstation lol!

Darth Stewie2398d ago

Actually the MG Series started on the MSX2 while the MG game on the NES was a port of it. The MGS series started on the PS1 which is when the series gained huge popularity and is why when people think of Metal Gear Solid series they associate the series with Playstation.

Hm really? Didn't realize the NES version was a port. XD

BISHOP-BRASIL2398d ago

Not only it was a port, it's a pretty bad one. To this day Kojima is always reinforcing that he is not to be related to that version, that neither him nor anyone in his team was consulted to the changes the other Konami Tokio team made.

The level designs are all different. The opening is different with 3 team mates that are seem dropping with Snake, but than never appear again, nor are talked of... The NES version don't even have a final Metal Gear fight... In the american version even the manual is misleadig, filled with different plot and character names.

This should give you some insight.

Seriously, if you liked the NES version, try to get your hands at the MSX-2 version (there's plenty of emulators and translated roms on the internet). You gonna facepalm so hard at Konami you may just knock yourself out, so be careful.

crash was and will be always my personal playstation mascot.
its damn shame that such a franchise fallen into the wrong hands.

MrMister2397d ago

I think that Universal has not made a Crash Game in a while. Maybe Sony should barter a small offer to get it back. Then We'll have Crash, Nathan, and Sack Boy as mascots. With Ratchet, Sly Cooper, and Jak/Daxter as secondary mascots (kinda what Donkey Kong is to Mario nowadays).

BtW, when I think of Playstation, the first thought that comes to mind is a Triangle (button) and Parrappa The Rapper. Not because of preference, but it just happens to turn out that way when I think of Playstation.

Its diverse interactive entertainment experiences is the brands image.

Don't ever under estimate the power of PlayStation.

mcstorm2398d ago

Don't under estimate the power of PlayStation was what got it up and running in the PSX days but the PlayStation mascot is GT this is its biggest name by a long way. GT is what Halo or Mario is to Microsoft or Nintendo.

Hicken2397d ago (Edited 2397d ago )

GT isn't a character, though. Iconic flagship franchise? Sure. But a series isn't a mascot; a character is.

History would probably say Sweet Tooth, as he's been around the longest. But Crash, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Kratos, and Jak & Daxter would all be good choices from previous generations(don't forget the cast of the various FFs, too). This gen would include Drake, Sackboy, a Helghan soldier, a Chimera, Cole, and a few others I'm probably forgetting.

In any case, I don't think Playstation needs a mascot at this point. Their stable of characters speaks for itself; no need for any ONE character to be the main face.

mcstorm2397d ago

Hickin i agree with what you say but gt is the game that sells the ps3 out of all of them in terms of exclusives like halo is for the 360. I think sack boy will be the face of the PlayStation branding come next gen and i see the name getting bigger and bigger with each new game brought out with it.

ico
