Max Payne 3 Review: A Rockstar Without Remedy? | OXCGN

OXCGN:

"Max Payne is a franchise very near and dear to my heart, and I hold Alan Wake in similar regard.

Remedy knows how to combine multiple elements into a seamless package, while topping it off with some of the best writing in the industry.

The lack of their presence in Max Payne 3 is disturbing, and until I played the game, I was extremely apprehensive.

Rockstar somehow managed to do the impossible: carry the everlasting legacy of Max into the future, and at that, under the reigns of a completely different team."

I was worried about how this game would turn out...looks like I didn't have to!

cstyle4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

Just finished this game today. Rockstar did a fantastic job on the single player campaign. One of the best games of the year so far.

Proeliator4350d ago

I LOVE his analogy at the end - "it’s the Hollywood remake of that awesome cop show you watched as a kid."

Pintheshadows4350d ago

Great singleplayer and multiplayer, especially gang wars.

Reborn4350d ago

Some of the lines Max says, perfect for the moment.

Proeliator4350d ago

I feel most aren't quotable though, whereas everything in the previous two was nearly textbook perfect.

"I ain't slippin', man, I've slipped!"

Ducky4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

"I was in a computer game. Funny as Hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of."

That part caught me off guard.
I think the panel-style narration kinda fit the tone more, gave it more freedom to break the 4th wall.

Pintheshadows4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

I'd say fatoldman, that what you quoted is my favourite part of any game ever.

Max was in a game within a game. Brilliant. I loved how he acknowledges the healthbar and weapons select.

I think what R* has done is mature Max Payne in terms of the way the story is told. Max is middle aged after all. I miss the graphic novel scenes but I thought the way R* had handled it was majestic.

One thing Max 3 misses is the Jackhammer. I kept hoping, but it never turned up.

Still Max Payne 3 is the best game i've played this year by some distance. Favourite part, Max goes all Terminator. If you've completed it you'll know.

Proeliator4350d ago

@Pintheshadows

My three favorite parts:

1) The single greatest GODDAMNIT line in recorded history

2) The terminator part near the end

3) You'll walk... with a LIMP!

Cablephish4350d ago

@FatOldMan

That computer game quote, pretty sure that's from the first Max Payne game.

Pintheshadows4350d ago (Edited 4350d ago )

I love loved the line at the beginning.

'Things had gone from fine to f***** up in less than a second'.

Or the "dimestore angel of death".

Hell, I loved it all.

A full blown war in a football stadium was great with Max making comments about the game. The little things as well like seeing the kids knocking a ball about in the favela or just the way everything shatters, explodes and gets torn apart.

Cablephish, I think fatoldman knew that.

I got 80% trophy completion on Ragnarok but left a few of the battles. Will come back to it one day.

Miraak82 293d ago

Dragon Quest 11 is my top pick

RpgSama292d ago

Dragon Quest XI was such an AMAZING game, I had a blast from the very beginning all the way to the very end, it actually got better the more you played, full of surprises as well.

Another game that I enjoyed from the very beginning all the way to the end of the 100% completion was Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Really, really, really fun game with a great heartfelt story.

Where is Horizon Zero Dawn?? where is Ghost of Tsushima?? I just got my Platinum on HZD and is now trying to finish the Frozen Wild expansion. so much care and love went into that game and it really shows. I especially adore the lore and have sunk many hours listening to the logs and reading journals. the back story is great and the gameplay is awesome. can't wait to replay on the hardest difficulty on NG+. next in my list would be to finish GoTsushima

Tacoboto293d ago

Ghost was fantastic especially after Iki Island and the PS5 upgrade. 100%'d that, Horizon Forbidden West (not ZD), GoW (not yet Ragnarok), Spider-Man, and R&C: Rift Apart.

Each one absolutely worth it.

Aloymetal292d ago (Edited 292d ago )

100% I would like to add to you list RDR2, amazing as well and the perks from getting the Legend Of The East outfit is awesome.
Sekiro as well, have to play twice to get it but it's worth it!

Demetrius292d ago

I agree I'm on my 2nd playthroughs of both horizon forbidden West(zero dawn I played also) ghost of Tsushima except I'm replaying it on PS5 this time, the iki island expansion is amazing

ClayRules2012292d ago

Yeah, GoT was already an AMAZING game on PS4, but playing it on PS5, along with that expansion, just even better.

Elda292d ago

I just started my copy of GOW:R, enjoying it so far.

DefenderOfDoom2292d ago (Edited 292d ago )

Okay the title of article should be top 10 , 3rd person games to complete 100 percent. Nine 3rd person games and 1 racing game on this list .
