The Last of Us bests Uncharted by creating a world where violence is appropriate… and necessary

The PA Report - Sony showed new footage of the upcoming Naughty Dog title, The Last of Us, at a pre-E3 event in Santa Monica, and the game may have already stolen the show. Gamers may still be skeptical of the title’s use of a post-apocalyptic world and the relationship between an older man and a younger girl, but Naughty Dog has earned some up-front trust after the success of the three Uncharted games, a franchise that has spawned an iconic character while proving that feature-quality dialog and voice acting were possible in a game. It’s worth remembering that the Uncharted titles were also built on familiar tropes.

Yeah Uncharted was such a cluster**** of Cliche nonsense where our hero is actually a raving lunatic who has killed hundreds/thousands of people

Abash2009d ago

If someone shoots at me and I have a gun, you can bet I will shoot back to kill them. For all the people who frown upon Nathan Drake's "violence" in Uncharted, well you're as good as gone since you are apparently against the idea of harming someone in self-defense

Hisiru2009d ago

I would kill you all for treasures

Ducky2009d ago

"For all the people who frown upon Nathan Drake's "violence" in Uncharted, well you're as good as gone since you are apparently against the idea of harming someone in self-defense"

That wasn't really the main problem.
Drake fights in self-defense, but his character behaves in a way that doesn't fit someone who's killed hundreds of 'people'.
The characters in TLOU, on the other hand, do behave a bit more realistically to the violence around them.

I am still unsure if it's a fault of the uncharted series, or if ND is trying to critique the genre itself. It's not like the writer's are unaware of it; Lazarevic points out that Drake is no different than him in UC2, and Drake wonders in UC3 why bad-guys always seem to be trying to kill him even in situations where they themeselves should be running for their lives.

Razmossis2009d ago

As long as the gameplay does something more than just shooting and climbing, it'll best Uncharted

ShinMaster2009d ago (Edited 2009d ago )

Seriously? All games are cliches.

A lunatic? Right.... because Uncharted was the ONLY game with shooting mechanics were you have to kill people. /s

If pirates and mercenaries are shooting at you, you're going to defend yourself. How do you not get this!?
He's not even killing innocent civilians.

You haters don't understand that hating on Nate for his actions is like hating on nearly every other video game character.

Yea, this is a good example of how much BS goes on in game journalism.

Cliche action movie, describes uncharted pretty well. Can't fail platforming. Aside from shooting people (which is no more fun than GTA) it's pretty damn close to a quick time event game.

Approach wall. hit x to climb, done. Approach cliff automatic can't fail jump engaged. Look at beautiful graphics. listen to overdone cliche lines, spoken from overdone cliched action hero and buddy types.

It barely a "game". Journalist love it because its so easy and well built. That doesn't mean its got good gameplay mechanics.

who cares about these stupid meaningless awards?

giving a scripted linear game that has no edge over any game except for graphics and some silly humorous dialog that amount of awards is stupid

it only shows you one thing, that the gaming media this gen has turned into big joke...where were all these awards when better games came out MGS4 or Heavy Rain ?

@ RedDead

well said!

The point is that Uncharted won so many awards from so many different sites, journalists, and institutions and yet it's now constantly getting flak as though something about it has changed between then and now. The point is to show the hypocrisy of the gaming media. And the two biggest points are how stupid it is to A)Compare 2 games of different genres to each other and B)Compare 2 games from THE EXACT SAME DEVELOPMENT STUDIO!

I mean it's frickin' stupid as hell. It's like saying "Naughty Dog outdoes Naughty Dog. How Naughty Dog shows Naughty Dog how it's done." Like, WHAT?

RememberThe3572009d ago

I think you miss the point of Uncharted...

starchild2009d ago

What does cliche even mean any more? Almost everything under the sun has been done, but just because something has been done before doesn't mean that it can't move us in some way.

The Uncharted series was very well done. I can't wait to see what they do with The Last of US.

GarandShooter2009d ago

Guess we've finally come to the point that it has become cliche to label something cliche.

Y_51502009d ago

Drake said this when he was in a pirate ship, "rum, how cliche."

ShinMaster2009d ago (Edited 2009d ago )

And it's still a really great series regardless of your opinion.

archemides5182009d ago (Edited 2009d ago )

that's because uncharted is like indiana jones...it's not supposed to be taken seriously, it's kind of a b-movie. last of us looks like it can be taken seriously. the opposite of having violence be necessary and still make sense, is making your protagonist an insane killer.....aka kratos.

BitbyDeath2009d ago

People in action movies are the same way.

CGI-Quality2009d ago

As usual, a nonsense post from you. Never change.

OT: The Last Of Us, so far, hits all the right notes. It will be a completely different world to Uncharted, so it's not necessarily fair to judge it based on what Uncharted didn't (and couldn't) do in its world.

Biggest2009d ago

Mario has killed countless turtles and mushroom monsters and barely says a word. I'd say he is the REAL lunatic. And he did it for a borderline braindead princess!

MrDead2009d ago

So no one minds that Indiana Jones kills scores of people to achieve his goals and to avoid getting killed but when Nathan Drake does it that is wrong?

From what I've seen of The Last of Us shows me it’s a completely different game which focuses on survival and the brutality that that brings. Uncharted was more comic book action hero.

To say one beats the other "by creating a world where violence is appropriate" seems odd as then Uncharted would have to have the same gameplay and narrative style to make the comparison.

Drazz2009d ago

This game reminds me of the movie, ("The Road" 2009)
and a little like the movie. ("Carriers" 2009)

Swiggins2009d ago

Reminds me of the Book of Eli a bit too...but you know...with actual colors.

Drazz2009d ago

The environments remind me of ("I am Legend" 2007)

brodychet2009d ago

This game just won Game of the Year. Oops, sorry my ESP was acting up.
