Once upon a time, the battle for supremacy in the gaming world was a straight fight between Nintendo and SEGA. And nowhere was this more fiercely contested than in the two respective companies mascots. In the Red corner stood Mario, as robust and staunch a figure as ever, champion of a veritable treasure trove of classic titles. Meanwhile, in the blue corner, SEGA fans rallied around the young pretender, a hedgehog with attitude called Sonic. He was presented as the antithesis to all that Mario represented, and his games were all about speed. They were also singularly enjoyable. Such was the quality of the series that Sonic became a bona-fide gaming superstar, and one of a handful of gaming characters to be classified as a household name.
