Aliens: Colonial Marines a Wii U timed exclusive? New release date info is suspicious and intriguing

So Sega has just announced that Geabox's long-awaited Aliens: Colonial Marines is now set to drop on the new, later-than-expected release date of the 13th of February, 2013. Given that the game was originally slated for late 2012, many are understandably decrying this as a delay. But is it, really?

Gearbox would be stupid to make Aliens a timed exclusive to Wii-U.....It's very doubtful that they would ignore millions of other gamers who own PC/PS3/360.....

Emilio_Estevez2197d ago

It would seem that way. Unless Nintendo is offering a TON of money, it can't be true.

There isn't any date for the Wii U launch so how could Gearbox give a date for the Wii U version?

Emilio_Estevez2197d ago (Edited 2197d ago )

They didn't give a WiiU date, that's one of the points leading to this conclusion.

Reading is a valuable asset, you should try to use it.

Nintendo don't have a ton of money to give. Especially after what they posted last year.

TenkoTAiLS2196d ago

Yea, because more money in the bank than Sony and Microsoft's seperate gaming divisions combined as stated in financial reports earlier this year. Along with their reported ability to be able to take a loss like the last reported one, every year till 2052 and still be in the black isn't a lot of money >.<

You should read the financial reports on each company before assuming Nintendo is the one without cash and doing badly. Just a quick google would have shown you that Nintendo has crap tons of money to throw around.

Mikefizzled2196d ago

@TenkoTAiLS Just because they have a ton of money in the bank doesn't mean they can throw it around. I expect them to use a lot to subsidize the price of the WiiU so that it can get lot of people onto the new console.

EVILDEAD3602196d ago

They simply pushed the release date back..of nothing more nothing less. It will have the same release date for all consoles.

It was a smart move because the game would have been crushed by the high profile holiday releases.

I'm pretty sure the reason it's delayed is because Gearbox didn't want to release their two big games (Borderlands 2 and Aliens) so close together. I said this months ago so I'm not very surprised. And I think it's good that they're taking more time with Aliens because Borderlands 2 is going to be more of the same with Borderlands 1 anyway (which isn't a bad thing). Aliens is more of a gamble and they have a big chance at screwing it up and making a lot of people mad since it's canon.

ozstar2196d ago

Videogames are NEVER canon.

And i think the delay is because of the overcrowded end of year period, as per usual.

IHateYouFanboys2196d ago

@ozstart: "Videogames are NEVER canon. "

Aliens Colonial Marines is though, as has been stated by 20th Century Fox:

"the Sega-published shooter has been inducted into the “official canon” of the Alien universe by 20th Century Fox. Chris Faylor, the Community Manager for developer Gearbox Software, told us that all previous expanded universe material (including the novels, the comics, and all the Alien vs Predator stuff) has been thrown out. The only productions currently considered canon are the first four films (yes, even Alien 3), Aliens: Colonial Marines, and maybe Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (since there’s still the possibility it’s not a prequel)."

I'd say its highly likely that the Wii U will have ACM exclusively for a few months. the statements in the article are strongly hinting towards it. This would be an EPIC launch title for it, and would make me part with my hard-earned on the wii Us release date for sure.

You clearly are ignoring the fact that companies pay other companies for timed exclusives, Nintendo has A LOT more money than you can imagine for Microsoft or Sony. They can definitely buy a few months of this game, they should. I hope they did, and the rumored launch date for the Wii U is November, I believe early November.

shackdaddy2197d ago

I dont see why it would be so shocking. All of the companies have had timed exclusives. Even PC had a couple...

EcoSos32197d ago

True but this is Nintendo it doesnt matter what they do people are still going talk trash about them, but if it is Sony or MS they'll praise them.

stuntman_mike2197d ago (Edited 2197d ago )

I cant see why they wouldn't make it a timed exclusive, but I don't think it is. it's just a scheduling thing.

dubt722197d ago

I really hope this turns out to be one of the best licensed games ever, more like arkham, then the rest of the dross that gets released with a higher marketing budget than development costs...

DaPrintz2197d ago

No way. When game was announced, it was 360/ps3. That was the audience intended. Multi player is still a good part of this game and you don't gamble on small install base. If they released this game on WiiU first to mediocre reviews, 360/ps3 crowd passes. It would get buried by Halo, Bioshock, God of War, etc. The play is to either release on 360/ps3 first or simultaneously across all of them. Slow sales on WiiU wouldn't hurt them in that case.

Ck1x2196d ago

But as an argument against what you've stated. The reason why they would agree to something like a timed exclusive, could be because there's just not alot of competition on a brand new console. If the game really looks that good on WiiU, then why not release it there first to get some press and hype going for it, before it hits the other consoles. I agree that on the ps3&360, this game might be over shadowed by even larger titles such as Halo 4 or GoW. But then again, most people were probably already gonna pick up those games anyways over this.
