The Devil And Diablo III – Why ‘Always Online’ Is A Disgrace

With the controversy over Diablo III’s launch continuing to rage, Mark Butler argues that demanding a constant internet connection for single-player experiences is madness – and urges game companies to reconsider such tactics.

I am fairly sure I speak for everyone when I say that Blizzard going so far out of their way to prevent piracy has made me even more determined to pirate Diablo 3.

Pricks.

kreate4357d ago

The thing about diablo 2 is that ppl still buy it even today.
So whats the point of doing all this anti-piracy crap?

I have 4 copies of diablo 2. 3 copies of expansion. Never downloaded any pirated version but i did make copies of it.

Blizzard should def reconsider.

mananimal4356d ago

we`re not COMPROMISER, if you dont get it your just PASSIVE with a hormone problem.

vallencer4357d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

Im fairly certain you don't speak for everyone because it doesn't bother me.

Edit: I don't think the always online was solely to stop piracy. I believe it was to be able to monitor hacks, bots, and of course for them to make a little more money with their auction house.

kevnb4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

the drm isn't to stop piracy as much as it is to control the game. Almost any other game where soloing affects multiplayer has the same online only policy. People are either just upset the servers have been done occasionally, are trolling, or are just dumb.

Dread4357d ago (Edited 4357d ago )

Agreed with the article. Having to be connected to play the single player experience is bull@#$

and for all of u who defend blizzard for this bull@#$ u will wake up one day and realize that u have lost ur ability to play the games u bought whenever u want. What hapens if the servers are shut down by blizzard, how are u oging to play the single player campaign? plus i have to tolerate lag when i dont want to play miltiplayer.

I never say this because i believe developers deserve to get paied for their games, but i hope the pirate the @#$% out of this game.

rdgneoz34357d ago

Yep, gotta love lag when you're playing solo. A few times I've played alone, I've gotten a red connection and lag some how. Also, love the servers coming down for maintenance when I'm playing "solo"...

kevnb4356d ago

it isn't a single player experience, its soloing. Just like any other online rpg where solo play affects multiplayer...

Basjohn4356d ago

Lol. OF course it's a single player experience. NOTHING. NOTHING about the game is like an mmo. It's a story driven game, intro, cutscenes, you being mentioned as a individual in all of them...you know.....single player stuff. The game CAN be a co-op experience but you're sniffing some serious glue here pal if you think it isn't a solo experience at it's foundation.

There isn't an online game around where you can solo the final boss on the hardest mode, in D3.....you can.

Somebody4356d ago

Blizzard NEVER said this game is an MMO or MMO-like.

MMOs are either subscription based or free-to-play. Diablo 3 is none of that.In fact it's the exact opposite where players are the ones who get real money off that game.

mananimal4356d ago (Edited 4356d ago )

AMEN, & let me add also to all you Corporate Cock riders who are EXTREMELY SHORT SIGHTED & PASSIVE, do you realize that you have NO CONTROL OVER even your Local Internet Provider? Having to rely on Battlenet/Blizzard is only part of the problem. Theres NO WAY you cant UNDERSTAND that VERY BASIC PRINCIPLE, thats just plain ol commonsense & forthought(thinking ahead) or seeing the BIGGER PICTURE plus the FUTURE RAMIFICATIONS OF DRM. It doesnt even require ANY FORMAL education to understand the PRINCIPAL, all it requires is some HONESTY within your own self & the COURAGE(lol) to think RATIONALLY, you dang SHEEPLE or so chicken shit to admitt anything that makes you STAND OUT & STAND UP FOR PRINCIPLE, are you even a MALE?, seriously grows some BALLS PEOPLE & STAND UP FOR YOURSELES for once in your life, ridiculous, just pathetic, & you wonder why WOMEN wont give you anytime??? Hello!!?? anyone home in that thing between your ears?? geez man.

DanJenkoFMV4357d ago

The same problem happened when MAG launched on PS3. Everyone tried to get on at once, the servers broke and I couldn't even play the game until a week after I'd bought it.

As Internet Connection gets stronger in the future then online-only games will become more acceptable, but at the moment 'always online' games simply shouldn't exist as it seems this exact same problem happens each time one is released.

rdgneoz34357d ago

"As Internet Connection gets stronger in the future then online-only games will become more acceptable"

Its not the internet connection that needs to get stronger, its the companies being able to handle the number of people logging online and always having the servers up / no lag or connection problems when playing solo.
I've had a few times red connections in D3 while solo, and then gotten kicked from a few co-op games for connection issues when I'm able to alt-tab and go online to stream videos and music just fine.

DanJenkoFMV4357d ago

Fair enough, but my point still stands - technology isn't at the stage where you can have millions of people trying to play an online only game at once, and therefore they shouldn't exist.

rdgneoz34356d ago

"technology isn't at the stage where you can have millions of people trying to play an online only game at once"

MMOs have millions of players playing the game at once. Hell, the number of people playing COD MP at once... They just have them playing on separate servers / regions.

The technology does exist, its just that companies underestimate the number of people trying to play the game day one or at peak hours and don't have as many servers / room for players (underestimate or just try to save money by not adding more till its needed). Many companies add more servers to handle the load after the fact.

Sidewinder-4357d ago

This was just one of the reasons why C&C4 was a pile of horse-shit.

Psychotica4357d ago

It's like cable tv, they force us to stay connected. I demand that every single show on tv be available for off line viewing. What if the cable lines go down how can I watch my favorite show?

Pillville4357d ago

I think a more accurate analogy would be, what if you needed your cable to be connected to watch a DVD?

Diablo 4 storefront being a cash grabbing shitshow does unironically attest to that, kudos.

kythlyn6d ago

Microsoft needs to be guiding Blizzard to be what it USED to be, not allowing it to continue to be the greedy bastardization of itself that it has become.

XiNatsuDragnel7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Okay i will be interested if they become old Blizzard but might as well be dead.

Rynxie7d ago

They will never be old blizzard. Most of all the OG's left from developers to those on the top (even some decision making folks left).

Vits7d ago

Shame most of the people that made Blizzard what they were, have already left a while ago.

ApocalypseShadow7d ago

I was about to say this. How can they be blizzard when they're no longer blizzard from yesteryear?

blacktiger7d ago

Rare was the thing I lost heart

victorMaje7d ago

Exactly. Blizzard hasn’t been Blizzard for a long time.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Knightofelemia7d ago

Blizzard is not the same Blizzard like it use to be.

PassNextquestion7d ago

Were you expecting Microsoft to hire everyone that had left Blizzard long before they purchased the company...

Microsoft has let the Blizzard company they purchased continue to be the Blizzard company they purchased.

thesoftware7306d ago

Wow, PassNextquestion,

You fully understand what that saying means, unlike some people on here who just have to say negative garbage talk.

When someone says, "Just let *blank* be *blank*, "they are just letting them operate how they operate.

It's pretty much how Sony "let Bungie be Bungie."

This comment section is full of outright haters, but you have to "let N4G be N4G"

GamerRN6d ago

This site leans so heavily in one direction...

BISHOP-BRASIL6d ago

I don't think people commenting are necessarily blaming MS for anything here, this is just collective longing for what Blizzard/Vivendi was before Activision's meddling.

If I had a 100% way to be sure that this money would go to a fund or a reserve dedicated only to the guys who develop the games, be them designers, artists, programmers and so on, I could think about it.

But we all know that this 'tip' would only end up in a publisher's CEO pocket to buy a new yacht, so, no, I ain't tipping anyone anytime soon on this industry

neutralgamer199210d ago

Exactly these companies were raising money for good causes and gamers were donation and come to find out they are keeping a good chunk of be pie

PapaBop9d ago

Yeah tip your developer, 5% proceeds go to developer, 95% to the publisher or whoever. Isn't tipping for staff not making minimum wage? How about they just pay their developers properly and like you know, give them fair bonuses? Too much to ask from Blizzard these days, Kotick saw to that and is now laughing all the way to the bank.

MrDead10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

It's the t**ts at the top looking at ways to cut devs wages and get the players to tip them like waiting staff, and I'll guarantee a percentage is skimmed and kept by Activision Blizzard. This is 100% for shareholder and CEO playouts.

Popsicle9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I have to agree with this. On the surface tipping devs sounds like a great idea, but in the end it leads to pay cuts and subsidization of pay. Tips then become an expectation or the devs “can’t make a living.” Lastly, especially in the US, tip culture has gotten out of control, and it serves as an excuse not to properly pay employees. Sounds good but doesn’t end well.

drizzom9d ago

@ Popsicle

I think your right on the nose with how much tipping has become rampant. Instead of it being a relationship directly between the customer and the developer or employee, it now has a middle man ingrained in the system. DoorDash is one example. It ends up becoming a metric where the company can measure 'just how much more money you are willing to part with' before raising the price on the main product.

1Victor9d ago

Uh so they’re trying triple dip or more we buy the game that they’re already withholding/cutting content for dlc we was told that season pass would help the developers thrive we felt for it.
Now on top of all that plus their sales bonus they want tips enough is enough whatever happens to you create/built a good game get a bonus for sales milestones you care about your game and community we reward you with more sales not for doing 3/4 of a game then save the other 1/4 for dlc and passes after

raWfodog9d ago

The 'tip' is me buying your game in the first place.

S2Killinit9d ago

Very well said. If it was possible to send the money to either the developer or some organization for the betterment of gaming, sure. But we all know that will not be the case.

Rynxie9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

No, it would go to those on the top. They will still fire developers, have a bunch of microtransactions, raise prices of games and so on.

H910d ago

So they eventually don't pay their workers and depend on our tips to pay them like the case with waiters!

Deeeeznuuuts9d ago

That kind of practice is only normal in the states, as far as I know anyway, what a backwards system

H99d ago

No it's as well in a every country that wants to amercanize

bloop9d ago

Ireland is literally the first stop across the pond and we don't have a tipping culture. The only establishments here that would expect a tip are the tourist haunts that Americans visit. Other than that, you might tip in a restaurant as a sign of gratitude for great service and waiting staff would be paid a full wage anyway.

Rebel_Scum9d ago

Tipping is not customary iin most countries dude. Get a passport lol.

Jin_Sakai10d ago

Is this a joke? How about the big wigs giving up some of their pay for their hard working developers.

MrBaskerville10d ago

Maybe the CEO could earn his money based on tips.

mastershredder10d ago

good god. The devs are not baristas dude. Total 1% ideals. Fing Chadosaurus.
