Why Zelda Games Should Never Be Based on Story

A lot of Zelda fans have become vocal about their desire for the series to start taking story more seriously. Series producer Eiji Aonuma disagrees, saying it'd be bad for the franchise. We've seen a number of games come and go in recent years that have failed to deliver on their storyline ambitions: Metroid Other M, Mass Effect 3, StarCraft II, and Diablo III serve as good examples. Should Zelda learn from their failures and continue to stay away from the story-based approach?

Given that they tried a more story driven approach in Skyward Sword, a game that ended up quite a few plot holes I'd say no.

They should focus more on exploration like they did with Wind Waker.

I think a Zelda game needs a good story, however Wind Waker was by far my favourite. If I could find the disc, I would be playing it right now.

Care to elaborate on the plot holes?

Patriots_Pride2280d ago

I like the fact that Zelda does not follow a story and hope that does not change.

The only thing that I want is to play as Links parents and find out why the left him in the woods.

ChickeyCantor2280d ago

It does follow a story. But every previous game has been bits of story telling.

Not all Links were left in the woods with the Kokiri.
OOT wasn't the only zelda game or link for that matter lol.
And there is a Manga out there. It is already explained.

I haven't had a bad experience with Zelda yet. I really don't care what they focus on. As long as the devs think I'll enjoy it, I'm game.

but the title of this article reads like something Roger Ebert would write in order to solidify his ridiculous opinions against videogames and their refutable status as "respectable media".

Hicken2280d ago

You know, it doesn't take much at all to see what you're saying.

NegativeCreep4272280d ago

Because I wasn't trying to make a cryptic or confusing comment.

Honest question: Where you trying to be a smart a$$ with your comment?

Hicken2280d ago

Not at all. Once you brought it up, it made perfect sense.

But I imagine there are people that wouldn't get it, just as quickly as I understood what you meant.

Lord_Sloth2280d ago

I just wanna see them return to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask's level of darkness and dungeon design...And buttons....

Same with Mario. Star Fox, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Mario RPG, Battalion Wars, and a few other Nintendo IP's, are the titles I expect to have some narrative.

Any game can have a story, but a titles that are rich in gameplay, usually distracts the gamer from even caring about one (I.E. Monster Hunter series).
