Will next gen retail games offer less content

It's possible next generation games could contain less content than what they currently offer, and that downloadable extras are likely to become even more prominent as a result.

We'll have to wait and see.....

But probably.

RaidensRising4471d ago

Do they already offer less content?

LOGICWINS4471d ago

In the PS1/PS2/Xbox/Gamecube days, we didn't have huge open worlds like Skyrim that offer 500 hours+ of gameplay. With each generation, gamers get more content on the disc. The only difference is that publishers are getting better at finding ways to get you to spend even MORE money.

MysticStrummer4471d ago (Edited 4471d ago )

Yes we already get less with most games and that trend will continue. Trophies and Achievements are an illusion of more content, and gamers don't seem to care so devs and publishers will continue to look for similar ways to charge more for less. The same goes for paying to play online. Anyone who thinks the Online Pass isn't at least partially a result of people's apparent willingness to pay for online play is a fool. Paying for stat tracking and other traditionally free features is next.

It's a definite. Most game have "DLC" available weeks after they released. Which is obvious that it could have been part of the retail game but was hold back in order to make more money. This could be a way to stop from raising the price at retail. Because now a days a game has a lot of content when you compare it to games from last gen.

Basjohn4471d ago

Right on most counts there but content /= cost. Modern development principals are screwed up the logistics kazoo with publishers outsourcing bits of each game in micro installments, larger and larger teams are also being hired to produce games far less cost effectively than solo indie groups do or old developers (which were roughly the same size).

Remember, software has no real world manufacturing cost. The only costs are labour and ironically, the people who hired the labour.

Good example is "Hard Reset" fantastic game by a small indie group that (single-player) kept far far far more entertained than BF3 or MW3.

At first we will as game developers learn the new consoles. And then later on we will get more. Just look at this generations first games VS the games now.

How does that even make sense?

KILLERAPP4471d ago

Less content and for more money...

PetitPiPi4470d ago

Less content? Possibly.
$100 games? Likely.
Little N4G kiddies finding a new hobby? Wishful thinking.

Please stop comparing video games to movies

"Many video games catch not only great commercial attention but remarkable critical attention as well. We have seen games like Heavy Rain, The Last of Us Part II, and even entries in the Metal Gear series described as fantastic interactive experiences, even heralded in the same way as Hollywood's greatest films.

I would suggest that not only is this an unfair comparison but also a harmful one. Video games, by their very nature, are an intricately different medium and should be weighed against one another rather than another form of media," Phillip writes for GF365.

Yes, please stop. They're better than most hollywood drivel nowadays.

BLAKHOODe1255d ago

I think Hollywood films will becoming increasingly more like video games in the future, especially as the world embraces the "new normal" from the pandemic. It makes sense, as games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcase just how realistically we're reaching in graphical capabilities, as well as showcase extreme action sequences in spectacular ways. And as time goes by, it'll get easier and cheaper to produce such "art", as well as create new star "actors" that never age, never die, never complain, never gets involved in scandals, etc. Technology is amazing and we're only just getting a taste of what it'll eventually be.

sourOG1255d ago

No. Some games are like movies.

medman1255d ago (Edited 1255d ago )

No. For the money spent, a quality game provides far more entertainment value than a quality movie. Especially when looking at what is going on in the world, and how a studio can attempt to pilfer from consumers by charging 30 dollars for Mulan via streaming. Ridiculous. There is no comparison....games all day.

Have you played Detroit? While it’s my personal favorite, I fully understand many preferring Heavy Rain more. I’m glad you enjoyed Heavy Rain too.

bouzebbal1412d ago

def. one of my top 3 best experiences on PS3

ClayRules20121412d ago

bouzebbal

That’s awesome to hear! What’re the other 2 best experiences?

akaFullMetal1412d ago

Great game, need to get started on Detroit soon.

ClayRules20121412d ago

Glad you enjoyed the game! Yes, Detroit is a masterpiece of a game, and their best work to date “in my opinion”

ClayRules20121412d ago

Wow, 10 years...and yet, still one of the best/most emotional/thrilling gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

So grateful to Sony for believing in Quantic Dream’s vision for this game, and giving them a chance. I’ll never forget David Cage saying “We want to challenge the player, but not with the controller, but mentally, with their decisions of “How far would you go to save someone you love” Well, they broke my emotional gamer heart lol.

My teenage son refuses to play this game, because I’ve told him in little detail the emotional impact it had on me all those years ago. Maybe one day he will.
