Chris Buffa (Modojo): Nintendo's Metroid franchise has an awkward history, at least when it comes to portables. After thrilling fans with the 1987 original on the NES, Nintendo brought the series into the handheld realm in the 1991 sequel, Metroid II: Return of Samus.
With the recent release of Dread, it's time to look back on the history of Metroid and rank the best — and the worst.
Best (for me) would be the first Metroid Prime. It was simply amazing the first time i played it. so deep and challenging while also turning the series completely into something that felt new and fresh.
Worst (for me) is most likely Other M. I can appreciate what they were trying to go for but it just felt flat and played out.
Looking at the rest of the list, I never played Federation Force but i have played the rest. Pinball is still one of my favorites to play now and then.
Metroid Prime: Hunters suffers from fundamental flaws the rest of the franchise tends to avoid.
I stopped playing hunters when it was littered with game shark cheaters. All they did was cheat online it was insane

Hollow Knight come damn near close to knocking Super Metroid from the top of my list, that’s a huge achievement for such a small team.
The problem for me is I’ve been waiting for a 2D Metroid that beats Super but I don’t think I’ll ever see that day. I still play the original 1-2 times a year and a few randomiser plays.
Fully agree with the list and all points it makes for each game. I’m expecting Dread to fit in the middle of that list but I’m happy to be wrong about that.
nintendo please PLEASE metroid fusion 2 DAMMIT or aleast a decent metroid prime the 3ds has the power . metroid prime hunters was garbage . preferable a new 2d metroid though
