None the less, This game is the truth.. the step in the right direction that the Gaming industry needs. i'm Glad Sony took up HR and Quantic dreams vision, this is what owning a PS3 is all about, giving experiences you simply wont find on any platform.

HR=totally purchased. i'm skipping the demo since i dont want anything spoiled for me.

And as far as bright spots for Sony, It's only the Begining of 2010, MAG started off the year Quite well i would say.. MAG has been sucessful, maybe not like ME2 but it certainly has garnered quite a positive reaction. and then ofcourse WKC is well not quite what everyone was expecting... This Game comes as Sony's Second and Better block buster of the year, but all of that Changes, after March, this Blokbuster onslaught continues with pehaps the biggest EPIC of the Year... GOW3...

Holy god dude...how nitpicky can you get? This is exactly what I've been talking about with certain games getting a free ride while others get nitpicked to death. Low res items in the background? Perfectly OK for ME2 to have it...9.5 for graphics and the most revolutionary game of all time, but Heavy Rain having low res items? FLOP, there's no excuse for low res items on a PS3 game, deal with it fanboys.

What's the big deal? The reviewer has played the game and gave the graphics an 8.5, why are you complaining?

Heavy Rain's focus is on giving an uninterrupted experience, so if textures seem a little off then it's going to affect the game and in a game like Heavy Rain it seems more apparent than other games.

Why do you have to assume that there is just a PS3 bias, and how the HELL did it flop?? It's so illogical for people to do that, and they do that a lot, especially with exclusives. People get really sensitive anything something bad is said about an exclusive, as if reviews aren't supposed to point out these objective facts.

Guys, you gotta remember that these games are reviewed by different people and different teams. The guys that review 360 exclusives aren't reviewing a PS3 exclusive. So Roper deducting a whole point for a slow start in now way means the game is worse than Mass Effect 2. In fact, why even compare the two?

I think that Heavy Rain got an 8.5 in graphics because it was compared with the best games on PS3 in terms of graphics (Killzone 2 and U2) and Mass Effect was compared with the best game in terms of graphics on the 360.

Meh...that's observing a standard, not nitpicking. Something was mentioned that many games have that problem but hey, let's mention it for Heavy Rain to make the graphics sound worse. But when other games have high-res models zoomed in with wonky animation followed with low res objects and bloom in the background so you won't notice, it's not worth mentioning. I'm singling out one aspect of the review, that's great it got a 9. I'm sure if a game you liked got a 10, but they said the story was mediocre and you disagree you would mention it.

Marceles...I get where you're coming from, you want the critiques to be equal. Where we are coming from is that it shouldn't matter. The fact that the review brought it up doesn't change what the game is or how good it is in any way. I mean you got all worked up (and you aren't the only person I see doing this) over something so irrelevant. Maybe the guy that reviewed HR is a graphics Nazi and other reviewers don't pay that much attention. The fact that he pointed out some graphical hiccups isn't going to change your enjoyment of the game is it?

I can kind of see what marceles is saying. For example, Me2 has the exact same emphasis as HR on character polygons to the exclusion of the environment. HR has the entire game mo-capped/hand animated, while Me2 is only mo-capped during in-game CG scenes. Plus I could easily venture to say that HR does carry more texture and graphical assets, even though ME2 has a bigger world full of crates and barrels.

So why is HR getting nitpicked for that? Is it intentional bias? Probably not because the reviewers are different, but still console graphics standards need to be measured the same way across consoles. It's these glossed over differences that make so many "strictly" 360 owners think they have the "same" level of graphics on their consoles.

I'm trying to have a conversation with my fellow gamers about a part of the review that isn't brought up in many games since similar games use the same technique. I know it shouldn't matter lol, but it was brought up in the closing thoughts and I wanted to bring it up.

It's not a graphics problem, it's a production technique. It's like saying GTA4 has the best graphics ever, 10.0, but then saying Infamous sucks because the textures aren't as great as Crysis and there's minor pop-in. It's an open world game, you give a little to get a little.

You are using PS3 exclusives, but if you look at the broader picture NO game is ever reviewed in one standard.

And do you really think ME2 would have gotten a lower score if the low res was pointed out?

You havent played the game yet, so that alone shows that you shouldn't be so quick to judge.

There is no "checklist" for games to meet standards.

And there were other reasons it got 8.5 too, so let's not dwell solely on "low textures"

I respect Roper's opinion (The reviewer). He doesn't play Xbox at all for those that don't listen to the Beyond podcast.. He is the senior editor of the Playstation team and I trust his opinion over Greg Miller or Ryan Clements.. I think he also pointed out that the voice acting was less than stellar in some spots (which I have seen in the demo) and talks about the game being a little slow to start. I think he is very clear why he gave the game the score that he did, there is no controversy here as far as I can see.

Biases, maybe sometimes... inconsistences, yes, almost always. But nevertheless, a great score for a great game. Awesome AAA quality, demo actually sold me on the game whereas before I was skeptical about the gameplay, etc.

HR is one of the best looking games I've played. Gamers should be excited about this kinda stuff, it pushes gaming to new levels.

Anyone saying that because it's a great score, it doesn't have to be accurate is dead wrong. IGN has had more than enough time to establish a set of standards that they rate games by, and when certain games get a pass in one area while other games don't and subsequently lose points, while it may overall not seem like much to you, it's unfair, and yes it is most certainly biased. It's a matter of the PS3 games consistently being judged more harshly. Maybe you couldn't care less about an extra point or two, but that's besides the point isn't it? Cause what matters to you is irrelevant, what matters is what the game deserves, and if each game is rated based on a different set of standards, there's absolutely no point.

This isn't some teen fanboy blog we're talking about here, if one game is being deducted points for one 'issue' yet another game released around the same time is given a pass on the issue it matters, whether you care about it or not. Clearly it matters enough for IGN to take points off and point it out. Not to mention this is a consistent problem with IGN and other sites alike. Just because it's a good score, doesn't mean that's the score it deserves.

This game could sell well. Indigo Prophecy sold over 800,000 copies in its lifetime (and it sold out very quickly on Xbox in most countries).

This game is getting a lot of attention from gamers, whether they hate it or not. If Sony can market the game well, then it can sell. They have to just focus on the fact that anybody can enjoy it (gamer or not), it's story driven (non-gamers might enjoy a movie-like experience), and that it's something different. Something you can spend your money on, and know that there's nothing else quite like it on the market right now.

Hopefully Kevin Butler gets hired for this, after losing his job as VP First Person Shooter Relations ;)

I would have to say that my personal favorite for 2009 is definitely Demon's Souls. I believe that Uncharted 2 fully deserves all of the awards it received, and I had a great time playing it, but I enjoyed Demon's Souls a bit more. I am looking forward to several more playthroughs.

LOL at all the trolls bombarding this thread with their uneducated comments. HR has its moments as an interactive movie but its also has its moments as an all out game. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with both sequences in the demo. It was well balanced. Det. Shelby scene was more on the QTE side but Agent Norman Jadins' scene was all gameplay from the time you exit the car. YOU CONTROL your character, walk around the scene, talk, and explore FREELY & AT WILL and if you look hard enough there even a path that leads to a highway. So for those of you claiming that its a interactive movie your only partially correct.

This game isnt for everyone and I'm sure it will be met with mixed reviews. I think its more suited for adults or people who dont need FPS bullets and action-at-all-times on their tv screen. Props to QD for having the balls to make a game thats so far left thats theres nothing like it on a console and props to Sony for having the sense to support them. The game seems really good and I cant wait to play more upon its release.

...here i was thinking that this would be the game that would beat Uncharted 2 visually, but apparently i was wrong. Oh well nevermind, anything Halo gets instant access to 9 and above. Like I said bias does exist the proof are in those pics vs scores. Heavy Rain looks twice as good, and an 8.5 in graphics is a small insult to the game, when it is clearly one of the better looking games on the market.

But, they coulda easily got away with 8.5 for controls instead by simply claiming they didn't like them, controls got a 9. For a PS3 game, we all know what a 9.0 to a 9.5 is. Just add 1.0 to 1.5 to get the true score value. All PS3 exclusives automatically start with a -1.0 score deficit on many sites. You can call it the Japan Tax on scores. (I am coining that phrase)

Hopefully Reach will be different, but so far every Halo Score this gen is +1.0 to 1.5 for hype points. Subtract the Hype Gain, and you will get Halo game true scores.

9.0 is very very good for a new IP, well quasi-new because in some ways its a spiritual successor to indigo prophecy. I'd imagine if they notched the quality and up everything up for a Heavy rain sequel it'd score 9.5-9.6

So, I was proven wrong reviewers do still enjoy innovation. I was expecting a low score since the other two PS3 exclusives were reviewed poorly. This review while not perfect is pretty good and it shows that when the correct reviewer reviews the game it does a better job than a reviewer who is new to gaming or is a casual shooter fan.

Was let down by the demo. Didnt enjoy the gameplay and wonky controls. Shenmue was far better for me. I will be picking up AVP instead as i actually enjoyed the demo much better than Heavy Rain. I dont enjoy doing QTE throughout the whole entire game. Mix it up a bit and let the gamer actually control some movement when fighting. Very disappointed, i was really looking forward to Heavy Rain. Maybe pick it up when it goes down to $20, but definately not worth the full price tag. Just too many damn games coming out!

good score for Heavy Rain, but this score is a VERY subjective one just like MGS4s. if you love games that play themselves, and would rather be watching a movie, Heavy Rain looks to be the best of the best. if you actually just want to have fun playing a game and being in control of everything your character does, youll most likely hate the game.

its like giving Mahjong a 9.5/10. its the best at what it does, the person that reviewed it likes slow thinking mans puzzle games, so it gets a high score......but for every person like that, there are 10 that hate it and have legitimate reasons for hating it.

what the devs did for this game was risky, and i am not surprised with your response to the game, however i think i'm gonna have to try this game out. If it gets good scores, its most likely a good game, so i think i'm gonna get this game! Why compare to ME2? This is a game with essentially no real gameplay and therefore 9/10 is a brilliant score. This game has to score with story, graphics, lifespan and voice-acting more so than an average game to make up for the lack of gameplay, a.i and challenge. It shows that the developers really achieved a lot with this game under these limitations and in doing so have created an original innovative game that can only be played on PS3. Maybe ME2 is better than this game overall but there are many other rpgs besides ME2 to play. However, how many games can deliver a similar experience to Heavy Rain? Zero! What games on the 360 or Wii can substitue for Heavy Rain? Zero! Its because of this factor and the game's great score that make it unique and a very important PS3 exclusive for mature intelligent gamers. I can't wait to buy and play this. Don't get me wrong, I also can't wait to download and play ME2.

Videogamer gave HR a 10 for graphics and I trust Wesley Yin Poole more than Roper,who has a few odd opinions and is quite harsh.9 is a great score but if you look the PS team are a bit tougher on scoring than the 360 team.They've even joked about this fact on podcasts.
Fahrenheit is a good option for people that want a similar experience but be prepared for the silly super natural stuff that it veers into.The controls are as varied as HR.Good game though,well worth a download.

I'm surprised a lot of people are getting their panties in a bunch over the graphical quality of a game. At the end of the day, it's one reviewers opinion. The opinion of which we know no details of in terms of the testing environment that was used for the game. For all we know, the game could end up not looking great on a 1080P display. We all know that most games this gen do not run anywhere near 1080P. Hell, some of them don't even reach 720P. We also can't determine a how a game will look through screenshots developer released vids as we all know that they will be optimized to the greatest potential. Once the game is released, we as individuals will be the judge of how the game looks.

This is for those that the game is its own creation, unique, never before done, etc. You guys couldn't be more incorrect. Heavy Rain heavily takes after what Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit established for the genre. From the great story telling right down to the quick time events that can lead to consequences. It is being developed by those that did work on Indigo Prophecy after all.

When it comes down to it, the game will do well on its strengths. A deep story with excellent voice acting & life like animation mechanics. If there is anything people will complain about, it will be the large amount of quick time events. Don't think for a second that people won't because Capcom caught a lot of flak for having them in Resident Evil 5 & the game only had a handful. Indigo Prophecy suffered the same fate & would be one of the main reasons the game did not do well in the western market. Despite the great reviews it netted through the gaming press.

If you are talking about Motion Control, this is something we initially considered for Heavy Rain. The very first version of the game design was based on motion control, but it was not feasible at the time. But all the controls of the final version of Heavy Rain is still based on motion.
I have a lot of interest in Sony's motion device and there is a good chance that we announce something about it in the coming weeks...
And yes, it will help if you buy Heavy Rain ;-)
