Press Start to play: The end of splitscreen gaming?

A closer look at how splitscreen gaming went from gaming mainstay to neglected sideshow as the cloud took over - but with the rise of second screen experiences in the living room, it might just be on the way back. A game of TowerFall, anyone?

ricochetmg3685d ago

DEAD SINCE 05 ? But we want it back. At least some games offer online split screen . ( halo )

ErcsYou3685d ago

I've decided that the best option for local 2 player is buying another TV and console. COD supports split screen but I really really really dislike sharing a screen.

Enigma_20993685d ago

So you'd rather buy another console, plus TV, plus copy of the game so you can do the 2 player co op thing?

Ladies and gentlemen, the REAL reason they're killing split screen... double the sales!

Remy_S3685d ago

It was hard enough finding split-screen games last gen and I fear this gen it will be next to impossible.

SNACK_SHARK_TROLL3685d ago

Good old split screen, so many memories. I loved to play games that had split screen, so me and my cousin can play especially co-op like the Twisted Metal 4 series . Even sharing the same full screen like bomberman, fighting force, crash bash, etc.

I miss split screen so much. Got 2 PS4 controllers and 2 X1 controllers and no opportunities to use them both.

Diddy Kong Racing: Nintendo's Other Kart Racing Series With 100% Less Wario

While the genre may currently be an oversaturated one, it’s interesting to look back on how the Donkey Kong franchise even got a racer to begin with, and what stopped Nintendo from ever releasing more entries.

Man, this would be the perfect title to bring next to the Nintendo 64 lineup on Nintendo Switch Online. This game was so good back in the day.

purple10166d ago

GOAT, best game of all time, never got the updated version / sequel is so much deserved,

sometimes though, as they say "never meet your heroes" to avoid disappointment,

so I look at it as, best left in the past and just enjoy the memories.

The_Hooligan66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

Really was a phenomenal game. I still remember being at my cousin's house and unlocking the spaceship, our minds were blown lol

Also hated that damn blubber the octopus boss.

EasilyTheBest66d ago

One of my all time favourite games

TheEnigma31366d ago

This was better than Mario Kart 64 but far for me. I loved the different vehicles and adventure aspect.

Number1TailzFan66d ago

The single player was by far better than MK64, not sure about the multiplayer as I don't recall playing DKR with someone else.

The thing I noticed with DKR was that the enemy racers seem to hardly use power ups against you, but they are pretty aggressive in keeping pace or passing you so maybe that's why they made them use power ups less than MK.

FinalFantasyFanatic66d ago

I always remember DKR being hard as a kid compared to MK64, but I mostly played MK64 as a multi-player game, whereas DKR had a satisfying single player mode.

DarXyde66d ago

Absolutely loved DKR. Mario Kart, as much as I love it, has yet to really capture the magic of DKR. Better in some ways, worse in others.

Nintendo Classic Diddy Kong Racing Turns 25 Years Old In A Fit Of Nostalgia

Diddy Kong Racing, a Nintendo 64 title turns 25. Here to indulge in nostalgia and remember some of the title's amazing features.

Snookies12517d ago

I was downright addicted to this game when I was younger. Even among the countless classics the N64 spawned. This is near the top of my list, for favorites. I just love the hub world mechanic, where you have to unlock collectables to open up new areas. Something so satisfying about that...

corpsemaker517d ago

Exactly! The hub world was pretty unique for its time. Racing vehicles other than karts was a super cool element as well.

FallenAngel1984517d ago

Banjo & Conker also become 25 since their debut

Crows90517d ago

Freaking amazing game. I'm not into these games anymore but this is one I'd play again. Also Fzero and I can't remember the name but this car shooting games of pure destruction.

Number1TailzFan517d ago (Edited 517d ago )

Yeah most racing games tend to try to copy Mario Kart instead of DKR, Mario Kart mission mode on DS was decent, DKR was still better for the amount of variety though.

Variety is better than just having a standard race only mode. Looks like Crash Team Racing is quite close to DKR than to MK, so people who like DKR would probably like CTR.

Crows90517d ago

Ive contemplated getting it...might consider it more now..especially for my kids.

gold_drake517d ago

its soooo good.
shame we'll never have another one lol

GoldenEye 007 Remaster Gameplay Footage Surfaces

GoldenEye 007 Remaster gameplay has surfaced showcasing the campaign and multiplayer! Lleaker states that the game will be released sometime this year.

Gridknac1177d ago

Ahh come on, they could have at least modernized the damn graphics. That looks like a 360 port. I mean really, if you were gonna change that much why not go all in.

Vegamyster1177d ago

It was going to be a cheap XBL game in 2007, the graphics are still significantly better than the original game, where they got the full game that actually runs on an emulator is anyone's guess.

Double_O_Revan1177d ago

Read the video title of XBLA (2007). This was a 360 game. The game was about 90% complete when Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't reach an agreement, I'm guessing about royalty payments, which in turn shut the whole project down.

SmokinAces1177d ago

Cause its a remaster not a remake.

fr0sty1177d ago

We went from N64 to PS2...

Orchard1177d ago

"That looks like a 360 port"

Imagine a 360 game looking like a 360 game. I am shocked.

I thought it was well known this exists on a drive at Rare.

gamesftw2501177d ago

Many leaked files have been out but not playable. I do wonder where the video creator got the file from.

Double_O_Revan1177d ago

Yea. Footage of this leaked years ago. Not this much, but some.

Fishy Fingers1177d ago

This is how my brain chooses to remember the N64 version....

Weapon_of_choice1177d ago

And Mario 64 and dare I say Wave Race? I liked it...
