Game of Couches reviews Gears of Bore: Judgment

Mired in a heap of illusory superiority, Gears of War: Judgment overvalues its fan's dedication and their ignoring of it's weaknesses relying too heavily series' foundations. Gears of War has been around for seven years now and has given birth to four titles, so forgive me when I say, a machine gun with a chainsaw attached to it just doesn't do it anymore.

Gears of War: Judgment - 10 Years of Gears' Most Misunderstood Release

Gears of War: Judgment launched 10 years ago today, and quickly became one of the most misunderstood titles in the series.

ZwVw406d ago

Easily the best control-wise of the series. Judgment introduced melee-ing with the lancer and is still the only installment of the series (to date) which enables you to change weapons while roadie running simultaneously.

Gears 2&5 are the worst controlling in the series.

ocelot07406d ago

It killed the series for me tbh.

Sciurus_vulgaris406d ago

The Arcady aspects of the campaign should have been unlocked after completing a campaign play through. Seeing score screen after battles caused awkward pacing. The multiplayer was too different from other Gears games.

giovonni406d ago

Judgment felt more like an expansion than an actually game. To me, I was fatigued from the series at that point. The story was ok, over all it wasn’t bad.

People Can Fly expects that its cooperation with Take-Two Interactive will come to an end

"PCF Group S.A. (People Can Fly) has informed via the current report released on September 23, 2022, that it has received from Take-Two Interactive a letter of intent to terminate the development and publishing agreement by means of mutual understanding between the parties. This agreement pertains to Project Dagger, new action-adventure IP, that has been in development for the last 2 years – under the direction of People Can Fly’s team based in New York.

In addition to the standard provisions parties are to set out detailed terms of settlements differentiating the terms of settlements and the amount of advances received from the publisher for the game’s development to be repaid depending on the model in which the game will be commercialized, i.e., depending whether the game will be self-published or released with another publisher.

The Publisher has also not declared the intention to exercise its option to buy-out the intellectual property rights to the products produced under the agreement."

'and the amount of advances received from the publisher for the game’s development to be repaid depending on the model in which the game will be commercialized, i.e., depending whether the game will be self-published or released with another publisher.'

Yikes, so how do they work around that?

RaidenBlack574d ago

“We strongly believe in the Project Dagger’s potential and are now committed to continue its development within our self-publishing pipeline. The game is still in pre-production – our team is now focusing on closing combat and game loops and migration from UE4 to UE5. ... Of course, we are not ruling out working with a new publisher if this creates a compelling business opportunity.”

Ah, so that's what happens when you read the full article!

They've been hopping around so much the past decade. Epic, Gearbox and then Take Two. I'm looking forward to an eventual Bulletstorm 2.

This is the kind of studio that needs resources and should be acquired instead of spendings billions on publishers who already have all the resources in the world

RaidenBlack574d ago

People can fly was acquired by Epic Games in 2013 and was rebranded as Epic Games Poland.
2015, the studio split from Epic Games to become People Can Fly again.
This Polish studio has a nice little back story behind its studioname revolving around the studio's struggles, successes and hope.

Epic games just don't want to fund AAA development. If they were to partner with someone who gives them the creative freedom and resources I think they could make some amazing FPS games

Where is that 10 year plan for outriders?

rakentaja574d ago

People don't play that game, so I assume people don't want that 10-year plan. It's up to the players, not the developer :D

jjb1981574d ago

All jankiness aside I actually enjoyed the game. I can't see how this game has a 10 year plan though. The potential to expand on it seems limited because the mechanics are very simple.

jznrpg573d ago (Edited 573d ago )

The demo was so janky I hated the game. Some Xboxers enjoyed it because it’s all they had to play at the time and mediocre is acceptable when it’s on a subscription plan

glennhkboy573d ago

Outriders had improved its performance between the demo & the final release. It was the best sellers at launch on all platforms, including PC, Xbox & (you guess it) PS5.

This smell like the "Scalebound" scheme again.

Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.

My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)

ChasterMies671d ago

Agree 100% with this ranking. The campaign in Gears of War 2 is among the most fun campaigns ever made. It’s been downhill from there.

Zombieburger638671d ago

I’d say gears 2 and 3 are pretty even. I absolutely loved both of them.

darthv72671d ago

2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.

Jericho1337671d ago

The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.

I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Om4ever671d ago

Naaaan ... 2 is the best by far

Judgement

I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.

LoveSpuds671d ago

I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.

Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.
