All it takes is the pairing of the right people.

You need a director and a writer that is willing to take the content seriously and not try to make it into something that it isn't.

You need someone to talk to the producers and sell the idea as is and tell them why it does not need that "HOT Actor" or why it does not need to appeal to "All Audiences" by including Extreme sports.

And most of all either the Writer or the Director needs to have been a fan of the game. This is the (almost) only way to Marry the Video Game Methodology/presentation to Film-Methodology the audience needs a similar feel/thrill that they had while playing the source medium/material.

Comic movies like the Avengers, 300, and Sin City were all done by huge fans of the genre.
