Sony unveils PlayStation3 in India

Sony Computer Entertainment India (SCEI) has unveiled the new 40 GB PlayStation3 and the slim and light PSP with video out facility for the first time in India. The company also rolled out an assortment of games, including the PSP Spiderman speciality pack, PSP Simpsons speciality pack and three new games for PS3 at the launch of two-day Playstation Expo here on Saturday.

"Gaming is becoming an increasingly accepted form of entertainment amongst Indian consumers and society. We perceive this as an ideal time to expose Indian youth to the complete spread of entertainment that is possible with PlayStation", he said.

The Playstation has 60 per cent market share in virtual gaming industry in India, according to Milestone Interactive Software chairman, Jayant Sharma.

1.1 - Pricing of PS3

24900 INR, but its much higher than that of US and UK if we compare. Also when the games are not so cheap as compared to other countires. There is no mentioning of Spider man -3 BDR disk or games or anything.

Gaming is quite popular in Inida, especially PS2 but it doesnt sell much games due to piracy. On the other hand PC games are 2nd in popularity but they sell well here due to proper pricing.

Dude am I reading that right? 839? Wow. .. I wonder how many shops they surveyed. Somehow I don't see the PS3 doing any better there for the price. Keeping the BC in the 40gb could have helped them a lot in India from reading that article.

10.2 - The figures are hypothetical

Actually 360 has sold a lot more here, the reason for less sales are that most of the 360's are imported so you can get them at price of 21000 (premium) which is much lower than the actual price. Also the games are imported since they then cost only 1000-1500 rather than 2000. PS2 is now doing good in INDIA but I dont think when you can easily get a game at 20-30 RS anywhere the genuine games will sell well. Now everyone is waiting for PS3 but with so much PS piracy in past will anyone buy a orignal PS3 games and disks, because the sectors that buy PS is evolved in such a manner.

It think it has to do with pricing and I don't think many indians can afford it.

10.4 - Cannot trust this survey.

I mean to say that when the XBOX 360 launched many indians bought them online... i mean got them shipped from japan and other countries... there are now pirated games available in india and a lot of people buy them from their local dealers (people who ship modded consoles)... you get the pirated games for about 100-150 max that is about 3$... and metros like mumbai and delhi are big piracy center's cuz alot of people buy modded ones...
Heck if this survey is right i have 7 of those game dvds if you assume every one atleast buys 4 games then only about 340 of the above people must have bought them... rest just sit and admire the console...
If you need to research go check the black market or the grey market thats where every thing sells and sells for a lesser price..
