Retaliation! Xbox 360 Price Drop Confirmed But Will This Affect The PS3 Slim?

With the Xbox 360 & PS3 now marked at roughly the same price, the holiday season of 2009 will have some interesting sales statistics by the end of the year. With blockbuster titles such as Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Halo: ODST & Assassin's Creed 2, there's one major winner in this 'console war': the consumers.

It will just be a small bump on the road for sony.

Not even a bump.

1. It's not a price drop for the 360. It's just a drive upgrade, color change, and loss of the HDMI cable

2. The Slim is targeted at the 140 million PS2 owners out there who haven't upgraded to a PS3 yet and who the slight change in the 360 SKU is irrelevant.

"Retaliation! Xbox 360 Price Drop Confirmed But Will This Effect The PS3 Slim?"

Iono, Are the Consumers gonna play it smart by researching what console is better for them?

http://kotaku.com/5346777/p...

Plus Sony has yet to finish its announcement streak.
E3 - PSP Go,PS3 Motion Controllers, Agent, ModNations Racers, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 14
Gamescon - PS3 Slim, PS3 FW 3.0, PSP Minis, Heavy Rain

1.4 - I think it is good for both systems.
This is also great for consumers who are not yet in the next gen and want to play some of the upcoming games for each system.

However, this is bigger for the PS3. The 360 has been at a low price point for a while now, so it wont make much of a difference. Sony will see a pretty big jump in sales because people have been waiting for the price to drop.

lol...i like how Kotaku narrowed the backwards compatibility down only to last gen and not BC in general since the Slim can still play PS1 games.

1.6 - Truth be told
a 299 Elite is pretty tempting(especially the Fable/Halo bundle)! I already have a original 60 GB PS3 and currently selling the Wii(even the kiddies won't touch the thing anymore), will be picking up either a Slim or Elite with my Wii money.

Slim = The little ones stop bugging me about getting on my PS3.

360 = Best of both worlds!

1.7 - How is this price drop retaliation.
We knew Microsoft was getting rid of the Pro and dropping the price of the Elite at least a week before Sony officially announced the PS3 slim and price drop. It's not really retaliation if they were already planning their move before hand.

@darkride66
dude
every one knew about the slim months ago
Microsoft was expecting the slim and the price drop
the only thing that Microsoft is doing
is making sure that the xbox is in a lower price than the PS3
and do a lot of advertisement

"The Slim is targeted at the 140 million PS2 owners out there who haven't upgraded to a PS3 yet and who the slight change in the 360 SKU is irrelevant"

I disagree with this simply because the slim has no specific target audience except those who do not necessarily want to pay a lot for console.........its Sony's diversity in games that was able to bring in the previous 140+..........and I would like to believe that Wii probably captured some of those gamers.

The thing about the 'PS3 Slim' is, its the lesser model.

Its the 360 arcade equivalent to the PS3, minus all the good stuff. It really is only the gaming system it self. If i bought a PS3 (might when i get some hands on time with GT5) i'd want the best version at the lowest price, which is what the 360 is doing.

The best thing about the 'PS3 Slim' is where else can you find a Blu-ray player that price??? Which i would think alot of people will actually be doing.... just grabbing it for the blu-ray.

Does this mean PS3 game sales are gunna be going up??? in the short run, YES. but like i said it will be mostly used as a blu-ray player. but hey thats still money in Sonys pocket so i dont think it matters either way really does it?

Not that I would recommend it, but you can get a bluray player for $129
http://www.walmart.com/cata...

and on Amazon you can find used bluray players for under $100.

While I think its a no brainier to purchase a ps3 over such bluray players, I am reminded of my supervisor who chose a standalone bluray player as the free bluray he received for purchasing an hdtv at Best Buy. His response was..he knew that he wasn't going to use the ps3 for games. While this is someone with a PhD.....it obvious that he has no such knowledge on technological things.......and I am pretty sure there are tons of consumers out there just like him....but with far less money.

Really, what are these people smoking. How is this a "price drop" for the X360, when the core system is already $179? This so called price drop will have very minimal effect on the sales of X360s. A informed consumer will pick the PS3. And a budget consumer will go with the Xbox Arcade.

Yes a small bump in the road to a interesting year. But Sony will come out on top because the PS3 slim has that fresh new design smell that has been attracting new buyers. This will be the factor that wins holiday sales, the 360 will seem more like an aging machine with a price drop.

Blu-Ray is alright and online gamers on the 360 don't like WiFi because it's unreliable. I'd rather spend $50 less and get XBL's services and watch 1080p movies on the upcoming Zune service and for Natal. Most people are not saying should I get a PS3 or a 360 since the reason they choose these consoles these days are for retail and system software. People know the differences between the two companies strategies hence why the 360 is so popular with consumers, retail and mainstream media(WSJ, CNN and such)

Interesting point. Wifi can be a problem on the 360 I have tested it, But on PS3 I run that on Wifi and have no drama's at all with online gaming. I just wonder from a parents point of few if the Blu-Ray factor for and Extra $50.00 will make a difference?

I run both my 360 and PS3 wirelessly and don't have any problems. If your wireless is set up correctly (IPs assigned and ports forwarded), it should never cause a problem.

However, you point out paying $50 less for Live's services, don't forget, many of those extra services do require a Gold sub, which is $50 anyway.

Are the parents buying the PS3 because of Blu-ray for their kids of for themselves? If they waited for PS3 to come down why would they buy $25-$40 movies for it?(NETFLIX is an option) Natal will more than negate Blu-ray. Isn't it easier to buy the 360 and watch 1080p movies you can't get anywhere else on the 360 with the Zune service?

lol at all these nervous articles and rabid comments from PS3 fans. I hope the PS3 sale's spike lasts longer than the spikes from the other price drops I can't take anymore of SDF activating.

The only nervous people are the 360 fanboys who keep trying to act like a 360, the same price as other 360's before they were discontinued, is going to make a difference.

Edit: In case you have trouble understanding, as I'm sure you and your alt accounts do:

There was already a 360 at the current Elite price, if people didn't buy a Pro, why would they buy the Elite now?

i would say from the amount of point and counter point articles hitting every few minutes that both sides are nervous.

It seems when something is posted in favor of something, not far behind is a post refuting that previous post. Just another day at n4g.

On topic: there is always cause and effect. 360 fans who wanted a ps3 have reason to get one noe. Same holds true for ps3 fans wanting to get a 360. There is nothing wrong with supporting multiple systems.

How Natal will negate BluRay is just beyond me.

So far I wasnt taking into account how hell of a deal is the PS3 for the whole family. Parents get the console knowing they are getting an awesome BD player as well. Nice! I see both the BD market and the gaming market growing tremendously.

I think Parents will factor it in, My brother in law was talking to me about it the other day and was thinking of getting his kids an Xbox 360 for Xmas but now with the price drop on the PS3 his not to sure.

Zune is fine as long as you have a download limit but theres alot of people that don't in Australian and Newland. On top of that some people like to buy collectors editions, Tv show series and on so.

Paying for that via Zune to me seem a little silly as we are all unsure if the future Xbox will support this and if your purchases will be made available. Buying hard copy is what I think most people like.

4 - The Real Reason MS Dropped Price
Microsoft did not drop price to match Sony or because it was planned. They dropped price to put the monkey wrench out there on their own customers (who are big Gamestop shoppers) so if any of them had any ideas of trading their system in for the slim PS3 they won't get much for it now.

12 - That "article" had no point...
These unknown websites simply put up an inflammatory headline and get hits. But when you actually click the link, more times than not there is either no point to the "article", it is only one or 2 paragraphs long, or (most of the time) it is a rehash of stuff on every other website... It's just sad...
